PB hotel design editorial

Auguste Kettner, chef to Napoleon III, founded his eponymous Soho restaurant in 1867 in a row of Georgian townhouses on Romilly Street — making it one of London's oldest surviving dining establishments before Soho House Group transformed the building into Kettner's Townhouse in 2018. The conversion added 33 bedrooms across the upper floors while preserving the ground-level rooms that once hosted Oscar Wilde, Edward VII, and Agatha Christie, and the interiors, handled by Soho House's in-house design team, are calibrated to feel less like a hotel renovation than a Soho eccentric's private residence that somehow kept its doors open across two centuries. The rooms layer soot-grey William Morris-style floral wallpaper against burnt-orange velvet sofas and club chairs, freestanding cast-iron roll-top baths positioned in the bedroom rather than hidden away, and dark walnut furniture that carries the patina of something inherited rather than purchased. Downstairs, the Champagne Bar curves around a fluted copper-clad counter topped with Calacatta marble, pendant lamps in crimson silk and a cascading crystal umbrella chandelier overhead lending the whole space a faintly louche Belle Époque warmth. The restaurant beyond retains its original plasterwork cornicing and egg-and-dart mouldings, now painted a dusty sage and furnished with burgundy velvet banquettes — the architecture doing most of the heavy lifting while the design team contents itself with adding carefully chosen friction.

"An amazing gem of a hotel in the middle of Soho. Around the corner from all the main bars, restaurants and of course Ronnie Scott's. The hotel is beautiful inside and an oasis to the hustle of Soho. You cannot fault the staff and decor. The room (12) was also faultless and on a corner of the building looking down onto the Soho activities. The rooms are also well stocked with all amenities and of a very high 5 star class. The bars and restaurant is the same ultra high classic furnishings and staff are completely custom focused 🙌"

"We were invited to a private soirée in the champagne room and booked a medium room upstairs (two adults and a baby). What a stunning room. So beautiful. Bed was so very comfortable and the bathtub incredible! All amenities wonderful - and Marvin and the front of house staff were fabulous too. Highly recommend. Also the food and drink at the private party were genuinely excellent and plentiful. Huge success - highly recommend!"

"Stayed here July 2023, and had a great experience. Booked a Cosy room, best one available at time of booking. Great amenities, great shower, comfortable bed. Was worried about room sizes, but I have to stay I was impressed, and it felt like great value. The staff was lovely. Hotel staff, restaurant staff, house keeping. A special mention to Kine in reception. I got to the hotel early, and she made accommodations to get me in my room early which is a life saver after a full day of flying/air travel. Kindness goes a long, and Kine exhibited this greatly."

"Visited here on the 5th February with a small group of friends, had a great couple of hours until I tried to pay our bar bill. At this point our bill was just under £100, presented my card and was told it had declined. Tried twice more, same thing. Then I tried another card, same. This was the point I was concerned knowing that there’s no way they should have declined. The cards hadn’t declined!!! There was a problem . This is what I found out the next day on contacting my bank. ALL 5 transactions were properly processed and £500 . Phoned Soho House and was told to email. I did. Because I was still in london I went to see them face to face, spoke to a duty manager who apologised and was told I’d have the money back in my cards in 5 days. Didn’t happen. It’s now 2 weeks later and I’ve spoken to 4 different people and was supposed to called by the General Manager yesterday. Also didn’t happen. Mistakes happen and problems occur, it’s how you deal with them that matters!! So, Kettners, YOU contact me and sort this problem out."

"Somewhere to crash following drinks at 40 Greek Street with old friends over the Christmas period. I had a small room - compact and bijoux :) Lovely relaxed breakfast reading the complimentary paper. Preferred it to DSTH actually."
