PB hotel design editorial

Carved from a former Baptist church on Southampton Row in Holborn, a Grade II-listed building whose Portland stone facade carries a sculpted figure in a classical niche above the entrance arches, L'oscar London opened in 2018 under the creative direction of Jacques Garcia — the French designer whose fingerprints are on some of the most theatrically charged interiors in Europe, from Hotel Costes in Paris to the NoMad in New York. The conversion retained the Victorian ecclesiastical shell while Garcia filled it with an interior sensibility closer to a Symbolist painting than a hotel lobby: deep aubergine velvets, gilded parrot sculptures perched on branching floor lamps, butterfly specimens displayed in backlit brass-framed cases, and mirror-panelled ceilings that fracture the candlelight into something dizzying and warm. The property holds 39 rooms and suites across six floors. The guest rooms split between two registers. Those carved from the original church building retain high arched windows, sage-green panelled walls, and tall upholstered headboards in peacock-feather fabric, the floors laid in dark stained timber beneath gold-and-black damask carpets. Upper-floor suites added above the historic structure take a different tone — lacquered black doors inlaid with gold butterfly motifs, crimson silk cushions, and full-height glazing opening onto terraces with unobstructed sightlines toward the Shard and the City. The restaurant carries the same Garcia vocabulary: ebonised panelling, gilt botanical friezes, and plum velvet banquettes beneath a gridded smoked-mirror ceiling.

"London and L’Oscar was our last stop on our 5+ week trip and we saved the best for last! Our stay at L’Oscar bordered on magical. The interior is gorgeous and luxurious. It used to be a Baptist church and later the headquarters of the Baptist Church of England. The greeting when we arrived including coming across the street to assist us with our luggage made quite an impression on us. After checking in we were escorted to our room. Wow! The room was stunning! We stayed in room 201 which was a suite. It was the best room of our trip by far and that includes coming from the St. Regis in Venice the stop before which was definitely a disappointment. Service levels were amazing! Toni and Ana were both terrific with their friendliness, helpfulness and just outright commitment to providing the best possible hotel experience. I can’t speak highly enough about both of them. We also really enjoyed the breakfasts in the morning and dinner in the evening. We dined at the hotel our first night as we were arriving somewhat late and it was excellent. Their veal Milanese was delicious and in fact better than two examples we had in Milan a week earlier. It was so good we decided to eat there again on our last night! It was that good. As you can tell we loved our stay and would never think about staying anywhere else the next time we are in London! Highly, highly recommend!"

"A truly unforgettable London experience — 5 stars isn’t enough! I’ve stayed at many hotels over the years, but L’oscar London is in a league of its own. From the moment I walked through the doors, I was completely swept away by the opulence and attention to detail that sets this place apart. The room was an absolute dream — beautifully appointed, impeccably maintained, and so comfortable I barely wanted to leave. Every inch of the décor felt thoughtfully curated, with that signature bold, luxurious aesthetic that makes L’oscar so distinctive. The staff deserve a special mention. Warm, professional, and genuinely attentive without ever feeling intrusive — they anticipated every need and made me feel like a true VIP throughout my stay. It’s rare to find service at this level, and it made all the difference. Toni is amazing and really works hard to surpass your expectations! The location in Holborn is perfect — central enough to explore the best of London, yet tucked away enough to feel like a hidden gem. And the on-site restaurant and bar? Absolutely world-class. The food and cocktails were exquisite, and the atmosphere was unlike anywhere else in the city. L’Oscar isn’t just a hotel — it’s an experience. I’ll be back without a doubt."
