PB hotel design editorial

Facing Hyde Park along Knightsbridge since 1902, the terracotta and Portland stone facade of what is now Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park was designed by architects Architect CW Stephens in the Edwardian Baroque manner — red brick banded with white stone dressings, iron balconets, and arched ground-floor arcades that survive virtually unchanged from the original Hyde Park Hotel commission. The building carries the ceremonial weight of its address naturally: the image of the Household Cavalry processing past its entrance barely registers as incongruous, so thoroughly does the architecture belong to this particular stretch of London. The 2018-2019 restoration, delivered after a fire closed the property, gave interior designer Joyce Wang the opportunity to recalibrate 181 rooms without erasing their period bones. Wang's palette threads sage green velvet sofas, warm oak joinery, and brass detailing through guest rooms whose original cornicing and arched windows remain structurally intact. The restaurant's original plasterwork ceiling — an elaborate composition of coffers and foliage — was retained as the dominant architectural gesture, a bronze-topped oval bar and cane-back dining chairs introduced beneath it in a register that feels contemporary without competing. Downstairs, the spa's lap pool sits within a dramatically different atmosphere: dark honed stone surrounds, recessed skylights, and underwater illumination casting the water a vivid cobalt, the contrast with the Edwardian rooms above entirely deliberate.

"An extraordinary stay. Quiet luxury, timeless elegance, impeccable service. MO Hyde Park went above and beyond to make our stay an unique experience and made my birthday memorable; an upgrade to the Hyde Park Suite was truly a special and delightful treat. The birthday dessert and drinks awaiting us in our suite put a smile on my face! Thanks to Leonardo and Francesca for exceeding all of our expectations."

"I attended an event here in June. It was the same event that I had attended the June before. I can't say I was disappointed, but it wasn't as good as last year. The security man on the door was very helpful, friendly and professional, but the other staff didn't seem a patch on last year. The room was set up beautifully and we had access to the Terrace overlooking the park, for pre-lunch drinks. The food was ALSO lovely and our wine and water glasses were topped up now and then. The food was a long time between courses but I am unsure if that was the event or the catering. Either way I didn't care for it. I wIll return next year, but if it doesn't improve next year, I will think again before reattending."

"this was the 2nd time my wife and i have stayed at the hotel but the first with our son who is disabled and in a wheelchair. we were celebrating his birthday. from the time we got out of our taxi to us sadly leaving to head home all the staff were so friendly, accommodating and empathetic. a special shout to Hudson the house manager and the porters who made our stay so memorable. the icing on the cake was the upgrade to a huge luxurious Hyde Park facing suite, which was so unexpected and such an exceptional and unforgettable experience. "Simply the best hotel in London, period. We’ve stayed here three times, and while our visit two years ago wasn’t perfect, what truly matters is how a hotel handles issues when they arise. In our case, everything was resolved with remarkable professionalism, kindness, and genuine care. We visited again during Easter and were fortunate enough to receive a wonderful upgrade. If your budget allows, I highly recommend booking a room with a Hyde Park view. Waking up to the sight of squirrels running through the park while being in the heart of one of the world’s busiest cities is something truly special and incredibly peaceful. The spa and gym are both top-notch, and every member of staff is welcoming, friendly, and attentive. I also love The Rosebery restaurant it’s elegant, refined, and always a pleasure to visit. Breakfast is excellent, and the almond croissant is honestly the best I’ve ever had. The only minor drawback is that breakfast can feel a little crowded at times, but the staff always do their best to accommodate guests and secure a table with a park view whenever possible. I genuinely can’t recommend this hotel highly enough. The location is fantastic, with Harrods just a few minutes away on foot and Hyde Park right on your doorstep. For me, this is the best hotel in London, and we can’t wait to return."
