PB hotel design editorial

Norman Foster's curved Portland stone facade at the junction of the Strand and Aldwych is one of central London's more quietly authoritative pieces of urban architecture — a building whose elliptical corner tower and rigorously gridded fenestration have anchored this busy intersection since 2004. ME London, which took over the building in 2012 following a conversion by the Meliá Hotels group, inherited that civic confidence and pressed it into the service of a rather different ambition: a design-forward lifestyle hotel aimed at a younger, image-conscious European market. The interiors were handed to Foster + Partners collaborator and Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, whose signature oscillation between whimsy and precision runs through the public spaces. The lobby and restaurant environments visible in the images demonstrate the range he was working across — a monochrome dining room with curved white leather banquettes, polished hardwood tables, and a spectacular curved screen of stainless steel tubes that recalls a pipe organ abstracted into pure surface, set against a dramatic black-lacquered ceiling. The all-day restaurant takes a different register entirely: teal barrel chairs, rattan pendant lights, and a floor-to-ceiling tropical mural beneath the building's arched arcade windows. Guest rooms strip back to a near-clinical white — upholstered wall panels, grey carpet, and floor-to-ceiling glazing framing London roofline views — with the building's curved geometry surfacing in the tower rooms. The hotel runs to 157 rooms across ten floors.

"ME London is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to experience the city in style. The hotel offers a very pleasant atmosphere, complemented by professional and friendly staff who make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. One of its biggest advantages is the excellent location – perfect for exploring London’s main attractions, all within easy reach. Whether you’re walking along the Thames or heading to nearby landmarks, everything feels conveniently close. A true highlight is the beautiful rooftop terrace with a bar, offering a great setting to relax, enjoy a drink, and take in the city vibes. The only downside for me was that most rooms have windows that cannot be opened, which might be a small drawback for guests who prefer fresh air. Overall, though, this is a top hotel experience that I would happily return to and recommend to others visiting London."

"Stayed here as we were watching the play that went wrong (hilarious). It was extremely close. Never Stayed at this hotel before. From the offset we were made to feel welcome, comfortable and all round pleasurable experience. It only improved from there. The room was great and quiet. A truly outstanding experience and one that we can't wait to experience again. Throughly recommend it to everyone."

"My husband booked this hotel with a package as a surprise for my birthday, However it was disappointing. We are very familiar with the Melia brand and have stayed in many all over the world, including Melia Valencia which is outstanding. Therefore I had this in mind while writing this review. Back to ME London. He booked this room-with a river view . To our amazement the room was cancelled due to a system glitch! We know these things can happen so we accepted a different room unfortunately without the view. The room was lovely. We then went out for dinner. Unbeknown to me the room was to be decorated while we went out. When we came back I saw a confused look on my husbands face and proceeded to tell he needed to go to reception. 10 minutes later he came back saying we had to move next door, which we did. A lovely surprise! the room was decorated with balloons and with a bottle of champagne. Then another confused look, he said he had ordered a chocolate cake- but instead it was a bowl of fruit. Breakfast is a bit chaotic but the food was good. We had a few drinks in the bar, the atmosphere was quite good and relaxed. I was given a bag of melia products as a way of apology for the mishaps. Overall it was not a terrible experience it was just a shame things did not go to plan and the staff need to look other Melia hotels that really do go above and beyond for customer satisfaction."
