PB hotel design editorial

At 66 Great Queen Street, a Portland stone Edwardian block — its facade articulating the measured classical grammar of early twentieth-century London commercial architecture, with rusticated base, bold cornice, and yellow-painted window frames added as a contemporary counter-signal — houses Middle Eight, a 140-room hotel that opened in 2019 on the boundary between Covent Garden and Holborn. The building's scale and solidity ground the project in the grain of the neighbourhood, while the interiors move in an entirely different register: the design team layered the spaces with a narrative drawn from the history of musical theatre, given that the streets around here have staged London's performing arts for centuries, from the Theatre Royal to the Royal Opera House a few minutes' walk away. That theatrical ambition is most legible at the bar, where a canopy of what appear to be individually fixed autumn leaves covers the entire ceiling above a curved brass-edged counter and deep violet leather stools — a gesture that sits closer to stage set than hospitality convention. Guestrooms carry the theme more quietly: sage-green walls traced with gold-lettered lyric fragments, gilded bird motifs in mid-flight, channelled upholstered headboards, and oval brass-framed side tables in dark mirror. The restaurant grounds itself in handmade teal hexagonal tiles wrapping structural columns, chevron-parquet oak flooring, and loosely layered seating mixing indigo-patterned armchairs with midcentury timber dining chairs. The whole reads as a considered love letter to London's cultural quarter.

"Recently stayed at this very friendly Hotel We were welcomed with a glass of prosecco!!!🥂 Shown to our room by a helpful staff member who clearly explained lighting and room service if we needed anything further. We chose this Hotel as it was very convenient to walk to the shops,Theatre and restaurants. Very happy we did.!! It was my birthday weekend. My husband mentioned it to the front office team member Minting…. On our second evening we had a surprise knock on the door by Minting , who is team staff , who brought in a tray of twos glasses of chilled prosecco…🥂🍾 and yummy chocolates .!!!… We both so enjoyed meeting Minting who was so pleasant to talk to.wanting to make sure we were happy with facilities.and to let her know if any problems should arise to immediately contact front office team. Our stay here at this delightful Hotel did make all the difference because of the helpful staff members who clearly want Hotels guests to experience a happy and memorable stay. We will definitely be returning in the future."

"We stayed at Middle Eight on Saturday night and wished we had stayed longer! The service from the moment we walked in was attentive and kind. Have stayed at lots of hotels in London but we truly felt appreciated and important from the moment we walked in. We were offered prosecco or juice whilst we checked in and informed about their bar, gym, restaurant and partnership with a local spa (which hotel guests get a discount at). We were actually given a double upgrade on our room which we did not need as we spent barely any time there but nonetheless was extremely kind. Rooms were spacious, clean and quite high tech. Actually, the buttons and icons were a little difficult to navigate at times. Lovely tea and coffee facilities as well as a complimentary miniature male scent that my partner loved. Couldn't be in a better location. Extremely close to Covent Garden but not so close you end up with loads of noise. Price wise its quite fair considering where you are staying but considering our chosen rate did not include breakfast I would say its middle to top end. The service and feel of luxury make it more than worth it. A special thanks to Saq who treated us like royalty at check in and check out. Thank you for your kind treatment. We will definitely be back."
