PB hotel design editorial

At 66 Great Queen Street, a Portland stone Edwardian block — its facade articulating the measured classical grammar of early twentieth-century London commercial architecture, with rusticated base, bold cornice, and yellow-painted window frames added as a contemporary counter-signal — houses Middle Eight, a 140-room hotel that opened in 2019 on the boundary between Covent Garden and Holborn. The building's scale and solidity ground the project in the grain of the neighbourhood, while the interiors move in an entirely different register: the design team layered the spaces with a narrative drawn from the history of musical theatre, given that the streets around here have staged London's performing arts for centuries, from the Theatre Royal to the Royal Opera House a few minutes' walk away. That theatrical ambition is most legible at the bar, where a canopy of what appear to be individually fixed autumn leaves covers the entire ceiling above a curved brass-edged counter and deep violet leather stools — a gesture that sits closer to stage set than hospitality convention. Guestrooms carry the theme more quietly: sage-green walls traced with gold-lettered lyric fragments, gilded bird motifs in mid-flight, channelled upholstered headboards, and oval brass-framed side tables in dark mirror. The restaurant grounds itself in handmade teal hexagonal tiles wrapping structural columns, chevron-parquet oak flooring, and loosely layered seating mixing indigo-patterned armchairs with midcentury timber dining chairs. The whole reads as a considered love letter to London's cultural quarter.

"I have to say, Sebastian, the head concierge at Middle Eight, made our stay. From the second we walked into the lobby, his greeting was warm, genuine, and so welcoming that our travel stress just melted away. He'd arranged bubbly for us on arrival, which was such a lovely surprise and set the tone for the whole trip. But what really stayed with me was how much he cared about getting our evening right. He didn't just rattle off a list of restaurants — he really listened to what we were after, then recommended a dinner spot and a venue for drinks afterward that ended up being the highlight of our trip. And he didn't stop at suggestions; he picked up the phone and booked everything for us himself, so all we had to do was show up and enjoy it. It's no surprise once you notice the crossed golden keys on his lapel — Sebastian is a member of Les Clefs d'Or, the mark of the very best concierges in the world, and honestly, it shows in every detail. No request was too big or too small for him. His knowledge of London, his warmth, and the way he went out of his way to make sure we had an unforgettable weekend is the reason we'll be back at Middle Eight — and asking for Sebastian by name. I'm so grateful for all his help!"

"My stay at Middle Eight hotel was exceptional from start to finish. The hotel itself is beautiful, stylish and perfectly located, but what truly made my experience unforgettable was the outstanding service. A special thank you to the head concierge Sebastian whose professionalism, local expertise, and personal attention to detail went far beyond my expectations. His recommendations helped us experience the very best of London. From restaurant recommendations to helping arrange local experiences, every suggestion was spot on and handled with genuine care. It felt as though nothing was too much trouble and his dedication made me feel like a valued guest throughout the stay. Highly recommend and can’t wait to return!"

"Wonderful stay at the Middle Eight luxury hotel in beautiful Covent Garden area of London. Top notch amenities including a legit gym and equipment. Bar and restaurant were superb (try the Middle Eight’s own Gin!). We were there for a week’s stay. Sebastian and staff made us all feel at home and hooked us up with great recommendations for local attractions and gave us real insider/local tips. Will return! Cheers!"

"Stayed here for two nights. The best London hotel I have stayed at. Staff - very welcoming, very professional and could not do enough for us. The main reason I have taken time to write a review Common areas - immaculate, well decorated and feels luxurious Bar and restaurant - excellent - bar has a lively atmosphere that I enjoyed. Restaurant quality was exceptional, breakfast was delicious and we ate a really nice evening meal too. Rooms, well sized, spotless with very comfortable bed. Overall 10/10 - this is a premium hotel but you definitely are getting your moneys worth."
