PB hotel design editorial

Few Edwardian buildings in London carry the civic authority of the former Pearl Assurance headquarters on High Holborn, a Portland stone palazzo completed in 1914 to designs by Frederick Mewès and Arthur Davis — the same partnership responsible for the Ritz on Piccadilly. When Rosewood London took over the building in 2013 after a reported £85 million conversion, the brief fell to Tony Chi and Associates, who had the intelligence to let the architecture lead. The result is a hotel that carries the gravity of a great institution without sacrificing warmth. Chi's interiors move fluidly between the building's monumental scale and something closer to a cultivated private house. Guestrooms are dressed in dark espresso millwork, tufted linen benches, and sharply geometric carpet in chocolate and cream — a graphic sensibility grounded by period proportions and tall sash windows overlooking the Holborn roofline. The bar, housed beneath a barrel-vaulted ceiling with original Ionic columns still intact, combines dark leather stools, globe pendant lanterns in verdigris metal, and a fireplace flanked by well-stocked bookshelves — the atmosphere of a serious gentleman's club pushed into something more theatrically alive. The restaurant delivers a different register entirely: a mosaic wall of fractured mirror tiles catches and multiplies the light from globe pendants overhead, anchored by tufted Chesterfield sofas in ochre velvet. Across 262 rooms and 44 suites spread across eight floors, the building's Edwardian confidence and Chi's layered eclecticism hold each other in productive tension.

"Rosewood delivers where it matters most: service. The staff’s warmth, professionalism, and responsiveness were exceptional from beginning to end. I was granted an incredibly early check-in and was already in my room before 11 AM, despite standard check-in being at 3 PM. After a long journey, that alone set the tone for a great stay. The room was spacious and very comfortable, although the bathroom felt surprisingly compact for a hotel in this category. Small details like having the hairdryer stored in a bedside drawer due to the lack of a bathroom outlet felt slightly impractical. The hotel bar deserves special recognition. Excellent cocktails, atmosphere, and service. Easily one of the highlights of the property. Breakfast, while good, lacked variety and started to feel repetitive after a couple of days. Still, the attentiveness of the breakfast staff remained flawless. What truly stands out is how quickly the team handles every request. Whether it was pressing clothes or shoe shining, everything was handled almost instantly and with genuine care. In the end, that level of service defines the experience far more than the minor shortcomings."

"On the 1st of May, my niece took me to afternoon tea at the Rosewood Hotel for my birthday. My niece and I are huge afternoon tea lovers, so over the years we’ve been lucky enough to try many different places. But honestly, Rosewood stands out as the best for ambience, presentation, food quality, taste, and service. The whole experience felt more like walking through an art exhibition than having a traditional afternoon tea. Every single dish was beautifully presented, and I would really like to thank the chef for the incredible work and attention to detail. Monet’s artwork was brought into the experience so beautifully that I honestly cannot imagine it being done any better. Everything looked stunning and tasted just as amazing. A special thank you as well to Taylor, who looked after us during our visit. Taylor was warm, attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely made the whole experience even more enjoyable for us. Since it was my birthday, they also surprised me with the most thoughtful gesture a birthday cake inspired by Banksy’s famous “Girl with Balloon” artwork. Even though it was a small cake, it honestly meant so much to me and became one of the most memorable birthday cakes I’ve ever received. This experience truly made me so happy, and I’m already looking forward to going back again soon to enjoy the same food and atmosphere all over again. A wonderful experience from beginning to end."
