PB hotel design editorial

William Whiteley built his eponymous department store in Bayswater at the turn of the twentieth century, calling himself the Universal Provider and stocking everything from groceries to funeral arrangements. That spirit of total provision now finds an unlikely successor in Six Senses London, which opened in 2026 as part of Foster + Partners' £1.5 billion redevelopment of the Grade II-listed building — a project that preserved the original Edwardian façade, the central dome visible from the guest rooms, and a grand staircase modelled on Milan's La Scala. EPR Architects served as hotel architect and lead designer, with AvroKO shaping the interior concept across 109 rooms and suites on eight floors. The exterior colonnade, dressed with trailing greenery and terracotta pots between paired limestone columns, sets a tone that the interiors carry forward with warmth: herringbone oak floors, Carrara marble bathroom surfaces, sage-green tile splashbacks with unlacquered brass fittings, and freestanding black-steel shower enclosures that read almost as architectural objects in their own right. The all-day restaurant is finished in white marble with black diamond inlays underfoot, cane-backed chairs pulled up to white stone-topped café tables, and slub-wood ceiling panels softening the volume above pendant globe lights. Deepest underground, the 2,300-square-metre spa is the property's most extraordinary space: a pool room enclosed by sweeping biomorphic archways in warm ochre plaster, the forms closer to Gaudí than to anything else in London.

"Had a great Father’s Day lunch - George and the team really looked after us. Worth a note, the food is excellence across the board and the hard-to-find healthy bits feel like a treat."

"It was my partners and my second stay here in the last 6 months and the service has only gotten better and better! We had an amazing stay and actually had a friend join us this time because we recommended it so much! Every person we met last time remembered and greeted us fondly + all of the new faces around the hotel that we didn’t see last time were friendly, considerate, professional and always ready to help. I was a little unwell during my stay and the housekeeping/in room dining/ reception team made it a priority to make me feel better - sending a card, teas, things to help me sleep and even a Nintendo switch!! Once again, everyone we encountered was on top form but I’d like to give a special shout out to the following staff. I hope they are truly commended as the six senses is lucky to have them - Julia - Whiteley cafe Luke - Whiteley Cafe Beline - Whiteley cafe Anna - Spa Massage therapist Luvuyo - Integrated Wellness Practitioner Faban - Spa Receptionist Tristan - Six senses club Restaurant Mateusz - In room dining manager Blonde young lady at the spa reception We can’t thank you enough for our incredible stay and are really looking forward to seeing you all again! Benjamin and Aliah xx"

"A stunning experience from start to finish, made even more special by the exceptional staff across the entire hotel - special mentions to George and his team for the amazing welcome and hospitality throughout our stay, also Bilan's beautiful smile and welcome each morning at the (incredible!) breakfast. The spa is also breathtaking."

"Me and my wife had dinner at Six Senses Place Restaurant and really loved the experience. The ambience was calm and elegant, with soft music and a relaxing atmosphere. The highlight of the evening was the food and the excellent service from Jeeshan. He explained the menu well and recommended their newly launched burger, which was amazing. He was attentive, polite, and professional throughout, while also supporting his team. Overall, we truly enjoyed the experience and would definitely recommend this place."

"I recently had dinner at place members club .The experience was absolutely wonderful, and a big part of that was because of Manager Jeeshan. His menu knowledge was outstanding, and he explained every dish with confidence and genuine passion. He was extremely polite, attentive, professional, and made us feel truly welcomed from the moment we arrived. His warm smile and positive energy created such a comfortable atmosphere throughout the evening. What impressed me the most was his attention to detail and the way he handled everything so smoothly while still making every guest feel special. Service like this is rare to find these days. Definitely coming back again if the service continues like this. Highly recommended!"
