PB hotel design editorial

A Victorian townhouse on 7-8 Park Place, tucked into one of St. James's most quietly patrician streets, has housed a private members' club since the mid-nineteenth century — a lineage that gives the St. James's Hotel & Club Mayfair an atmosphere closer to inherited gentlemen's territory than to designed hospitality. The building's restrained Italianate facade, with its stone dressings and rhythmic sash windows, signals nothing of the richly layered interiors within, which were overseen by interior designer Alberto Pinto and his Paris studio in a scheme that balances the grandeur of the club tradition against a more contemporary European sensibility. Pinto's rooms work in deep jewel tones — burgundy, forest green, midnight navy — anchored by dark-stained timber joinery, bespoke upholstery, and decorative detailing that draws on French Empire and British Regency precedents without reproducing either literally. Gilt-framed portraiture and antique accents are woven through the 60 rooms and suites alongside custom furniture of a considered, slightly theatrical weight. The hotel's Seven Park Place restaurant, decorated in a correspondingly intimate register, earned a Michelin star under Billy Reid, its low-ceilinged dining room furnished with tufted banquettes and upholstered walls that absorb sound and candlelight in roughly equal measure. The cumulative effect is of a private house maintained at a standard that public rooms rarely achieve.

"I have been going to The St. James for decades, and it is definitely my preferred place to stay, either in a junior suite or suite. It’s like staying in your own London apartment, quiet, secluded, but in the exact perfect location for every shop you want(just turn left), or in St James Psrj (just turn right). Excellent food."

"Our experience hosting a business meeting at St. James's Hotel & Club was wonderful. The building has old world charm, with modern luxuries such as air conditioning, which saved the day during a rare UK heatwave. The staff was incredible helpful and attentive throughout planning and on the day."

"From the moment I arrived, St. James felt less like a hotel and more like a home. Rishabh greeted me warmly at check-in, helped with my bags, and the Front Desk found an early check-in room that set the tone for what turned out to be an exceptional stay. The hotel itself was impeccably clean and quiet, with a super comfortable bed. The highlight of my stay came unexpectedly. I had just been to the nearby Duke's famous Martini Bar to try their world famous Martini. I arrived to their bar at closing time and was promptly turned away. I returned to St. James, which is a block away, to find their bar also winding down for the night. The bartender, rather than turning me away, crafted the finest martini I've ever tasted. When he noticed I was watching the football match they had playing in the bar (France v Morocco), he and the staff insisted I stay; they gave me condiments and even made me an equally exceptional second martini. It was kind and completely unforgettable. The following morning, the Big English Breakfast lived up to every expectation. At checkout, when my ride couldn't reach the hotel and had to head down a street a block over, Rishabh guided me through a shortcut to the next block and loaded my bags into the car himself. Every member of staff I encountered at St. James went beyond their role to make my stay feel personal and special. I'll be back in London soon, I hope, and there's only one place I'll be staying."

"Fantastic stay at the St James, perfectly positioned for our afternoon tea at The Ritz. Access to the Ritz just up a set of stairs opposite the hotel. The breakfast was great and the staff excellent. Would thoroughly recommend this hotel for a short stay in London."
