PB hotel design editorial

A Victorian townhouse on 7-8 Park Place, tucked into one of St. James's most quietly patrician streets, has housed a private members' club since the mid-nineteenth century — a lineage that gives the St. James's Hotel & Club Mayfair an atmosphere closer to inherited gentlemen's territory than to designed hospitality. The building's restrained Italianate facade, with its stone dressings and rhythmic sash windows, signals nothing of the richly layered interiors within, which were overseen by interior designer Alberto Pinto and his Paris studio in a scheme that balances the grandeur of the club tradition against a more contemporary European sensibility. Pinto's rooms work in deep jewel tones — burgundy, forest green, midnight navy — anchored by dark-stained timber joinery, bespoke upholstery, and decorative detailing that draws on French Empire and British Regency precedents without reproducing either literally. Gilt-framed portraiture and antique accents are woven through the 60 rooms and suites alongside custom furniture of a considered, slightly theatrical weight. The hotel's Seven Park Place restaurant, decorated in a correspondingly intimate register, earned a Michelin star under Billy Reid, its low-ceilinged dining room furnished with tufted banquettes and upholstered walls that absorb sound and candlelight in roughly equal measure. The cumulative effect is of a private house maintained at a standard that public rooms rarely achieve.

"St. James's was a fantastic place to stay in London. We booked an "Executive Room With Balcony" which was a large comfortable space with a little walk out and lots of natural light. The location is fantastic just off of St. James with easy access to Mayfair, Jermyn Street shopping and bike rentals. While located in the centre of London a few blocks from Piccadilly, the place was very quiet for sleeping and returning to a peaceful location. Great doormen, front desk managers, cleaners - everyone was very attentive and friendly with multiple cleaning/ turn downs per day. We also enjoyed the breakfast and afternoon tea."

"A timeless hidden gem in the heart of St James’s for a reasonable price. From the moment I arrived, the atmosphere felt quietly luxurious, elegant, intimate, and wonderfully discreet. The interiors have that perfect balance of classic British charm and contemporary comfort, with beautiful details at every turn — from the spiral staircases to the softly lit lounges that feel almost cinematic. The service was warm, polished, and genuinely attentive without ever feeling overwhelming. My room was beautifully designed, peaceful, and incredibly comfortable — the kind of place where you instantly slow down and feel inspired. What I loved most was the feeling of escape while still being in the centre of London. A perfect stay for anyone who appreciates understated luxury, history, and character. I will absolutely return."

"We came for a weekend London, wanted to stay in Mayfair as that is the best part of town in my view. We picked a random hotel purely based on it's location. What we encountered in the St. James's hotel was so much better than expected. Staff were very friendly, courteous and helpful, room was amazing, and breakfast superb. I can really recommend this hotel for your next visit to Mayfair"
