PB hotel design editorial

Anchored on Brown Hart Gardens in Mayfair, the 1926 American Garage building — once a parking house serving the transatlantic set who arrived at nearby Claridge's — was transformed in 2014 into The Beaumont, a 73-room hotel conceived by owners Jeremy King and Chris Corbin with interiors by Richmond International. The building's creamy Portland stone facade, visible in the images with its restrained neoclassical detailing and deep-red canopied entrance, carries the feeling of a private members' club rather than a conventional hotel address. Most remarkably, Antony Gormley was commissioned to design ROOM, a sculptural suite in the form of a crouching human figure attached to the building's exterior — its angular Brutalist geometry visible in the images rising incongruously and thrillingly above the entrance forecourt. Inside, Richmond International worked in a register drawn from 1920s and 1930s transatlantic glamour: rosewood headboards with stepped Art Deco detailing, patterned geometric curtain fabrics in teal and cream, and burl-wood furniture running throughout the guestrooms. The Colony Grill Room, the hotel's American brasserie, deploys red leather banquettes, brass table lamps with coral shades, and large-scale landscape murals in an idiom that references the grand New York hotel dining room without slavishly copying it. The bar — dark walnut panelling, a curved red-leather counter, nailhead barstools, and brass-framed back-bar shelving — reinforces the same interwar American mood that the entire property pursues with uncommon consistency.

About

Overlooking a tranquil garden square in Mayfair, The Beaumont embodies the spirit of the grand hotels of the 1920s, while surrounding guests with the feel of a private club. The award-winning hotel houses 101 discreetly luxurious rooms and suites, Antony Gormley’s ROOM, an inhabitable work of art and the presidential Roosevelt Suite. The hotel’s chic Art Deco interiors have been refined by leading designer Thierry Despont working with architects Reardon Smith, while its expanding art collection inspires both nostalgia and excitement for the new. Rosi, led by chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen, serves playful twists on beloved British classics, and the Terrace brings al fresco café culture to Brown Hart Gardens. Afternoon Tea is held in The Gatsby Room, while classic cocktails and canapés are served at Le Magritte Bar. The spa offers relaxing and regenerative treatments for guests and locals; and there are three private rooms for meeting and entertaining.

"From the moment I arrived at the front door, the staff were helpful, warm and genuinely welcoming. I was shown around my room and talked through how everything worked, which was such a lovely touch. I did immediately forget how to use the heating and air con controls, but one quick call to reception and they changed the settings remotely for me without any fuss. The room itself was beautiful. The bed was huge and incredibly comfortable, and I was lucky enough to have an amazing terrace, which felt like such a treat in London. It had clearly been designed with the British weather in mind too, with lighting, heating, comfortable chairs and a retractable awning, so I could actually enjoy the outside space properly. The whole hotel is stunning. It has that rare feeling of somewhere that could have been there for hundreds of years and has simply been impeccably maintained. The details are gorgeous, from the black and white photographs in the lift to the beautiful powder room downstairs. Everything feels considered without feeling showy. What really stood out, though, was the guest experience. Nothing felt like too much trouble. I especially loved having steamed milk brought to my room for my morning coffee, and the little details made it feel like a real home away from home: a welcome note, a bottle of non-alcoholic fizz in the room, branded chocolate and macarons. As someone with a sweet tooth, that was very well received. Breakfast in Rosi was sublime. The room itself is beautiful, with a lovely story behind the revamp, and the balance of light, detail and architecture makes it feel as though it has always been there. The staff were attentive and the food was excellent. They even managed to make porridge feel like a treat. Between the buffet and the menu, it felt as though every preference had been thought about. On my last day, I was able to ask for a coffee to go before reluctantly leaving what really had become my London home from home. The location is also superb. Selfridges is on the doorstep, and Leicester Square is a lovely walk away down Oxford Street and Bond Street. If you are planning a shopping trip, I honestly cannot think of a better base. The Beaumont gets the details right. Every person I came across seemed to genuinely care about the guest experience, and it shows in everything from the service to the room touches - even down to a cable tidy that I may have accidentally taken home with me. I cannot wait for my next visit."

"We had an excellent time at the Beaumont, including an unexpected but greatly appreciated return for an additional night at the end of our trip following a flight cancellation, which was a welcome respite after a stressful time at the airport. Of the three hotels we stayed at on this trip we enjoyed the Beaumont the best by far. We found the service, design, and comfort better than the Ritz-Carlton properties we've stayed at previously. The classic Art Deco atmosphere is beautiful, the rooms were astonishingly quiet and perfectly appointed, and the location is convenient to multiple Underground lines and points of interest. We enjoyed each of the on-site restaurants, and the staff were uniformly excellent at every level, before, during, and even after our stays. We will certainly return."

"Absolute delightful stay! Every equipment and attention to details provided in the rooms made sense! Confortable beds, nice decoration but most of all the friendly and attentive staff from each service experienced (concierge/front desk/bellboy/breakfast staff made our stay even better! See you soon again!! Un grand merci de Paris!"

"Loved this hotel. Had an issue with the AC the first night but they moved us to another room the next day. Really liked the staff, especially the guys at the front. The breakfast buffet was nice, too. It had a good selection."

"Everything about the Beaumont was terrific. The rooms, the service, the location, and especially the staff: Ned at Guest Relations, Yanna at the front desk, and the helpful Concierge staff. It's easy to see why the Beaumont is consistently rated as one of the very best hotels in London. We are already planning our return visit in 2027."
