PB hotel design editorial

Anchored on Brown Hart Gardens in Mayfair, the 1926 American Garage building — once a parking house serving the transatlantic set who arrived at nearby Claridge's — was transformed in 2014 into The Beaumont, a 73-room hotel conceived by owners Jeremy King and Chris Corbin with interiors by Richmond International. The building's creamy Portland stone facade, visible in the images with its restrained neoclassical detailing and deep-red canopied entrance, carries the feeling of a private members' club rather than a conventional hotel address. Most remarkably, Antony Gormley was commissioned to design ROOM, a sculptural suite in the form of a crouching human figure attached to the building's exterior — its angular Brutalist geometry visible in the images rising incongruously and thrillingly above the entrance forecourt. Inside, Richmond International worked in a register drawn from 1920s and 1930s transatlantic glamour: rosewood headboards with stepped Art Deco detailing, patterned geometric curtain fabrics in teal and cream, and burl-wood furniture running throughout the guestrooms. The Colony Grill Room, the hotel's American brasserie, deploys red leather banquettes, brass table lamps with coral shades, and large-scale landscape murals in an idiom that references the grand New York hotel dining room without slavishly copying it. The bar — dark walnut panelling, a curved red-leather counter, nailhead barstools, and brass-framed back-bar shelving — reinforces the same interwar American mood that the entire property pursues with uncommon consistency.

About

Overlooking a tranquil garden square in Mayfair, The Beaumont embodies the spirit of the grand hotels of the 1920s, while surrounding guests with the feel of a private club. The award-winning hotel houses 101 discreetly luxurious rooms and suites, Antony Gormley’s ROOM, an inhabitable work of art and the presidential Roosevelt Suite. The hotel’s chic Art Deco interiors have been refined by leading designer Thierry Despont working with architects Reardon Smith, while its expanding art collection inspires both nostalgia and excitement for the new. Rosi, led by chef Lisa Goodwin-Allen, serves playful twists on beloved British classics, and the Terrace brings al fresco café culture to Brown Hart Gardens. Afternoon Tea is held in The Gatsby Room, while classic cocktails and canapés are served at Le Magritte Bar. The spa offers relaxing and regenerative treatments for guests and locals; and there are three private rooms for meeting and entertaining.

"Superb night in Rosi Restuarant at The Beaumont Hotel in Mayfair. The new art deco look is stunning. Roberto and his team were excellent and the food was amazing. Highly recommend the Scotch egg and also the John Dory fish fingers. Very ‘tongue in cheek’ for such opulent surroundings. Can’t wait to go back."

"My husband and I spent our wedding weekend at the Beaumont and they made our stay beyond memorable, including a complimentary upgrade to a beautiful suite so we could have more space to get ready and lots of treats throughout our stay. The hotel is stunning and a true 5 star, within the bustle of Mayfair but feels more intimate because of the discrete street. Thank you to the entire team, we look forward to future stays."

"My husband and I had a wonderful stay at The Beaumont Mayfair. The hotel has an Art Deco vibe and is small scale and feels very intimate (as opposed to larger upscale hotels that feel so corporate and have no charm - you could be anywhere in the world.) The rooms are spacious. We were upgraded to a lovely junior suite and welcomed with a handwritten note. We had the most incredible rain shower. It was a delight after a cold and wet London day. Housekeeping is fantastic. It was so nice to leave for the day and return to an immaculate room. The breakfast was wonderful. There is a continental buffet or you can order off of the menu. The host and wait staff were welcoming every morning. Our waiter that we had for our first 3 days there (can not remember his name) was so kind to warm up our croissants off of the buffet one day and when I told him it was my birthday, he brought out a piece of cake with happy birthday written in chocolate. (There was also a birthday piece of cake from the team when we returned to the room that afternoon. ) We only went to the bar one night but it was very cozy and upscale. They had some nice wines by the glass and some good bar munchies. The location in Mayfair is fabulous. You are a little over one block to busy Oxford Street and Selfridges, but once you get to the hotel, you discover a hidden gem. We were welcomed home by the friendly team every time we returned to the hotel for the 6 nights we were there. The concierge had great restaurant recommendations and the doormen were friendly and always holding an umbrella for you on rainy days. We walked everywhere. There were many boutiques and restaurants in the area. You could walk to most attractions (Buckingham Palace, Parliament, etc.) within 20-30 minutes. We like to walk so it was perfect for us. The Marble Arch and the Wallace Collection were only a 10 minute walk. (Highly recommend the Wallace Collection. It's another hidden gem.) For those who don't want to walk, there is always a black taxi readily available outside. London is a very expensive city but we thought that The Beaumont Mayfair was reasonable for the high end boutique product. (They were running a Stay 3 Pay for 2 promotion.) We absolutely loved this hotel and the experience we had. I am recommending to everyone I know going to London and I will definitely be staying there when I return, which I hope is soon. Thank you Ned and The Beaumont Mayfair team!"

"This is the best hotel in Mayfair, and possibly in all of London. I stay here for business anytime I am in London and it has always been a top-notch experience. The staff takes a very personal approach and is very accommodating and willing to go above and beyond my expectations. One example is at my last stay, I had some very old pound notes that I could not convert to newer pound notes, neither at a retail establishment nor at a bank (since I did not have an account at any UK banks). One of the bellmen, Colin, said not to worry, he would take the old notes, give me new notes, and he could take and cash in the old notes because he had a local bank account. I was ready to just throw them away, and he stepped in and helped without my asking. That isn't something I can imagine happening at any other hotel. I applaud the management team for hiring and retaining such a tremendous staff. I will continue to sing their praises to anyone who will listen! Bravo and cheers! LD"
