PB hotel design editorial

Edwin Lutyens designed the building on the corner of Great Russell Street and Southampton Row in 1928 as the headquarters of the YWCA — a commission that explains both the civic confidence of the Edwardian baroque facade and the slightly unexpected grandeur of its interiors. The Bloomsbury, which took over the building following a careful conversion, carries that institutional seriousness as a kind of structural gift: high ceilings, panelled rooms, a stone entrance stair rising beneath a vaulted iron-and-glass canopy thick with trained branches, lit at dusk like a stage set for an Edith Wharton adaptation. Inside, the design moves across two registers that sit in productive tension. The bar — walls lacquered in a deep persimmon red, a long brass-footed counter with a marble top, Murano-style glass chandeliers hanging in clusters — draws on a knowing Art Deco vocabulary that flatters the building's bones without attempting strict period accuracy. Guest rooms divide between an earlier, more restrained scheme of dark-panelled headboards, burnt-orange velvet cushions, and warm taupe walls, and a newer palette introduced during later refurbishment: arched crimson leather headboards trimmed in gilt, periwinkle velvet armchairs with ochre cushions, antique kilims underfoot, and a mid-century floor lamp in blackened steel. The courtyard restaurant, dressed in pampas grass, sheepskin throws, and rattan bistro chairs beneath a black-and-white striped canopy, achieves something closer to a Parisian conservatory than a London hotel terrace.

About

In the beating heart of London, close to Theatreland, The British Museum and Covent Garden, The Bloomsbury, a magnificent Edwin Lutyens’ Grade II-listed, neo-Georgian building sits amid the historic 18th century neighbourhood of the same name; a literary heartland filled with galleries, bookshops and a wealth of cultural heritage. Following a multimillion pound refurbishment, the final chapter in The Bloomsbury’s redevelopment includes beautifully designed Luxury Studio Suites, Sitting Room and grand salon bar - The Coral Room. The Coral Room, designed in collaboration with internationally-acclaimed, Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, features 36 original pieces of art commissioned with illustrator Luke Edward Hall and inspired by the surrounding Bloomsbury area. The restoration of The Bloomsbury also includes Dalloway Terrace, a charming indoor and outdoor restaurant and The Bloomsbury Club Bar which takes inspiration from the Bloomsbury Set, evoking the glamour of a bygone era.

"I was hesitant about posting this review, but the post-stay survey prompted me to do so. When asked what was the most memorable aspect of our stay, unfortunately it was a few negatives, with one stand out occurrence. On our first night, on returning to the hotel around 10.30pm, my wife and I were met by a man urinating in the plant pots right outside the front door at the top of the steps. I would have to presume he was leaving the hotel, as it's unlikely he would take the bother to walk up the steps from the alleyway. We mentioned this at reception when we entered, and I also mentioned it on check out and gave reception the approximate time it happened so security footage could be checked. It's disappointing that a hotel of this standard would allow things like this to happen. We ate in Dolloway terrace on the first day, food and service was good. Coral Bar service was good too. Rooms were nice and well appointed and the turndown service was superb. I know everyone raves about breakfast, but on our first morning, at 9.30am, we ordered tea and availed of the buffet, but after 30 minutes, no-one had come to take our hot food order, so I got up and asked the waitress if she could take our order, which she then did. This was at 10am, so it wasn't even busy. The second morning, Maria was very efficient at breakfast and service was fast. So I'd summarise breakfast service as patchy. Food was good and served promptly when the order was taken both times. Overall, it wasn't a great experience. Love the location and we would have considered it for return visits when in London, but having a stay like we just had, it wouldn't be encouraging when so many other good hotels are available. When you compare our experience to the overall rating on Tripadvisor, maybe we were unlucky, or maybe service and standards are inconsistent."

"Booked the Bloomsbury as a last minute option expecting a basic offering but how wrong was I! First class customer service from the moment I arrived to when I departed next day. I had booked a cosy room which I had expected to be small cramped and like a broom cupboard, again a pleasant surprise and Ive stayed in smaller stander rooms before. Breakfast was good quality, fresh and tasty with plenty of options"
