PB hotel design editorial

Oscar Wilde was arrested here in 1895, in a room on the first floor of what was then a private members' club on Sloane Street — a fact that clings to the building with the kind of weight no interior designer can manufacture. The Cadogan, A Belmond Hotel, is set within a late-Victorian terrace of warm red brick and Portland stone dressings, its curved bay windows and mansard dormers characteristic of the Queen Anne Revival style that defined Chelsea's domestic architecture in the 1880s. The property spans two former townhouses, running to 54 rooms across six floors, and underwent a significant renovation completed in 2019 under interior designer Guy Oliver of Oliver Laws. Oliver's approach throughout keeps the building's Edwardian social character close to the surface. Grasscloth-lined walls in the guestrooms carry white-painted panel mouldings in arched and rectangular frames, parquet floors laid in herringbone, and tufted headboards in linen and velvet — a palette that moves between blush and amber depending on the room. The bar counter arrives in veined grey marble with brass rail detailing, gold-arched bottle niches set against dark timber joinery, and a coffered plaster ceiling hung with globe pendants that have the character of a 1930s private club. The tea salon overhead centres on an elaborate rococo plaster medallion from which a tiered Murano glass chandelier descends, the seating arranged in curved leather banquettes and high-back wing chairs — Chelsea drawing room as much as hotel dining room.

The Cadogan, A Belmond Hotel Reviews

"I had a really great stay at The Cadogan. From the moment I arrived, the check-in experience was warm and genuinely welcoming — the staff made me feel at home right away. The room itself was spacious, bright, and very comfortable. The bed was easily the biggest I’ve ever slept in, and incredibly comfortable. The bathroom deserves a special mention — beautifully designed, large, and felt very luxurious. The location is also excellent, set in a fantastic area with easy access to everything while still feeling calm and exclusive. Overall, a very enjoyable stay, and I would definitely come back."

"We had a wonderful stay at The Cadogan, A Belmond Hotel in London. From the moment we arrived, the hotel felt incredibly warm and welcoming. The service was genuinely attentive and caring throughout our entire stay, making the experience feel almost like being in a familiar and very comfortable home. We stayed in a Junior Suite, which was beautiful, cosy, and comfortable. The room was thoughtfully designed and very well equipped, with great attention to every detail. One detail we particularly loved was the selection of books in the suite, which reflects the hotel’s inspiration as a kind of elegant private library. It added a special charm to the atmosphere and made the space feel even more personal and inviting. Everything was very well maintained, and housekeeping was impeccable throughout our stay. The restaurant (Lounge) was excellent. It was always a pleasure to return to the hotel after a day exploring the city. The location is another highlight. The hotel is in the lovely neighborhood of Chelsea, which is elegant, calm, and pleasantly quiet. There are beautiful gardens just in front of the hotel, creating a very relaxing atmosphere. We enjoyed walking to Harrods, along King's Road, and to several restaurants nearby. There are also underground stations within an easy 10-minute walk, making it very convenient to explore the rest of London. Overall, it’s a beautiful area and truly a perfect hotel. We couldn’t have chosen a better place to spend our days in London."

"My husband and I recently stayed at the Cadogan for our ten year anniversary trip. Our entire stay was phenomenal start to finish. While the hotel is immaculate and designed beautifully, what stood out the most was the care and attentiveness of the Cadogan staff. Each member of the team was not only warm and professional, but genuinely interested in our trip and getting to know us. As an example, when they learned we were traveling without our two small children, they surprised us with small teddy bears to take home to our kids! This was such meaningful touch that we won’t forget. A few team members to highlight from our stay: Thomas at reception was ourstaning and incredibly helpful, he offered wonderful recommendations and greeted us warmly each day. Finn delivered our breakfast each morning with impeccable service. Spencer, the doorman, was equally fantastic. He both efficient with our bags and welcoming. The Cadogan made our anniversary feel truly special. We cannot wait to return with our children and family one day so they can experience this wonderful place with us!"
