PB hotel design editorial

Oscar Wilde was arrested here in 1895, in a room on the first floor of what was then a private members' club on Sloane Street — a fact that clings to the building with the kind of weight no interior designer can manufacture. The Cadogan, A Belmond Hotel, is set within a late-Victorian terrace of warm red brick and Portland stone dressings, its curved bay windows and mansard dormers characteristic of the Queen Anne Revival style that defined Chelsea's domestic architecture in the 1880s. The property spans two former townhouses, running to 54 rooms across six floors, and underwent a significant renovation completed in 2019 under interior designer Guy Oliver of Oliver Laws. Oliver's approach throughout keeps the building's Edwardian social character close to the surface. Grasscloth-lined walls in the guestrooms carry white-painted panel mouldings in arched and rectangular frames, parquet floors laid in herringbone, and tufted headboards in linen and velvet — a palette that moves between blush and amber depending on the room. The bar counter arrives in veined grey marble with brass rail detailing, gold-arched bottle niches set against dark timber joinery, and a coffered plaster ceiling hung with globe pendants that have the character of a 1930s private club. The tea salon overhead centres on an elaborate rococo plaster medallion from which a tiered Murano glass chandelier descends, the seating arranged in curved leather banquettes and high-back wing chairs — Chelsea drawing room as much as hotel dining room.

The Cadogan, A Belmond Hotel Reviews

"This is a remarkable and memorable hotel. It is top class without being pretentious. Staff with a sense of humour for whom nothing is too much trouble and food that is exquisite (oh those oysters....!). Sheer comfort. Take the Pullman experience if you can - the murder mystery is fun. Overall a brilliant 24 hours!"

"The Cadogan is truly a luxury 5 star hotel. We have stayed in other Belmond locations before, and the Cadogan was exactly what you would anticipate from a Belmond. From the very first second you step in to the last moment when you leave, you feel at home, at peace, and that you have been taken care of at the highest level. First, I want to thank Anastasia, she was absolutely remarkable-- super professional and very kind! Also want to thank the entire concierge team-- the most knowledgeable and helpful. They answered all our questions, they organized our Pullman tour, and they gave us an amazing excursion of the Oscar Wilde suite. The location is wonderful, right in the heart of Chelsea. Guests have access to the Cadogan Place Gardens - two private gardens right across the street, with a children's playground, tennis/pickleball courts, and beautiful landscapes and flowers. This is something you don't see often at all, we enjoyed that so much! Our Junior Suite was impeccable! Very spacious, gorgeous bathrooms. One thing that was very special was the antique books in each room. We had a book from the 1750s, among some others! The restaurant/lounge was also beautiful, with very delicious breakfasts. The kitchen was very attentive towards my son's allergy, for which I'm really grateful! We can't recommend this hotel enough. Thank you to Russell Platt, who told us about the history of the Cadogan hotel-- a remarkable historical building! And thank you to his entire team! We had the most delightful experience and would definitely come back."

"Understated yet elegant entry spot opposite private garden - yes you can get a key! Fabulous. Doorman, concierge even waitstaff unfailingly and warmly attentive. Our room had 4 windows, amazing light and views. Linens gorgeous, decor delightful - the Beef Wellington a triumph. Would jump at the chance to stay again."
