PB hotel design editorial

Few buildings in London carry the weight of this one. Eero Saarinen's 1960 American Embassy at 30 Grosvenor Square was a declaration — Portland stone, a signature diagrid façade, and a gilded eagle presiding over Mayfair with the calm authority of a superpower at its peak. When the Americans departed and the building achieved Grade II listing, the question of what came next was never going to be simple. The answer, arriving in 2025, is The Chancery Rosewood: 144 suites carved from Saarinen's shell by David Chipperfield Architects and ReardonSmith, with interiors by the Paris-based Joseph Dirand, a designer whose gift lies in making restraint feel like warmth rather than absence. Dirand works the tension between the building's monumental bones and something more human in scale. The guestrooms layer dark walnut panelling against coffered ceilings that echo Saarinen's structural geometry, while curved boucle sofas and Verner Panton-adjacent pendant lights in aged brass pull the rooms toward a softer, more continental midcentury sensibility. The restaurant moves in a different register entirely — sweeping green banquettes, rattan screens, and cascading brass globe pendants give it the atmosphere of a grand Parisian brasserie transposed to W1. Below ground, the spa pool sits beneath an amber-lit coved ceiling, its mosaic floor shimmering in a space that feels genuinely insulated from the city above. The preserved eagle still watches from outside. Inside, everything has changed.

"In my opinion ,it is the first impression that makes you feel the hotel is good or not .We arrived the hotel at 1:00 pm although we informed them before that we will be arriving at 12:00 .When we arrived the receptionist didn’t know how to act and asked us to wait to arrange something. We waited for almost half an hour then one lady came and escorted us to one room .The room is small and so dark .We didn’t like it and then they changed our room to suite which was spacious and overlooking the Grosvenor square .The AC wasn’t working very well but they provided us with flowers , fruits , cookies and some sweets .The mini bar is free including everything which is a bonus to the hotel .They have what’s up number for anything you need but I found there is no communication between the staff coz when I order the house car through what’s up the concierge doesn’t know about it .about the breakfast, the service is less than normal . When we asked for butter they brought only one butter and when I wanted to order French toast 10 minutes after the breakfast timing the waitress apologized that they can’t do it which I find it awkward for this very luxurious and expensive hotel . I didn’t like the luggage to be transferred in uncovered trolly infront of the people sitting in the hotel cafe while we are waiting for the car to pick us to the airport .Also there is no chair or sitting area while you are waiting for the car .If you want to sit , you have to climb the stairs and go to the lobby area . Will I stay in this hotel again ??? Maybe if they have better training for their staff regarding hospitality and communication. One more thing , I would like to thank Nicole , Martin , Ammar and Andrea for their beautiful spirits , cooperation and hospitality."

"There is lots to say about this hotel & it's all good, I cannot fault anything! Stayed 1 night on 3 May 26 with my son. Greeted and bags taken for us. First thing i noticed at reception was the gorgeous smell, fresh flowers. Were given early check in & reception staff were friendly & welcoming. Suite was on 4th floor, was big, clean modern with beautiful decoration and welcome gifts. Bathroom had 'his & her' sinks and a very large tub and separate walk in shower. Lots of free toiletries and plenty of towels. A favourite perk was curtain control & Dyson fan and hairdryer. Two single beds were huge (they looked like double to me) with 3 three pillows each. We had afternoon tea in 'Jacqueline'.  Served us fresh sandwiches & tea options. The best part was the small cakes and sweet treats they send out, attention to detail was amazing & flavours were insane! Had a visit from Marius and Mathieu, two of the chefs who came to say hello and welcome us. We visited the spa and pool, was so relaxing, with a beautiful setting. We pre booked dinner in the Serra restaurant for 6pm. Arrived and greeted by Jack, very smart, friendly & welcoming. He seated us straight away, nothing was to much trouble and what an lovely accent he had! All staff welcomed us including the chefs. What a fantastic restaurant with open kitchen. Various staff came over to say hello including three chefs, Luke, James and Ignaacio who personally came to our table. Our waiter was amazing, he recommended lots and made me a non alcoholic cocktail, it was delicious. Food was exquisite, we ordered different dishes to share,  pasta starter, flat bread with dips, then sirloin steak and butter chicken with rocket salad and fried potatoes. Not one thing disappointed us! My son also tried room service, the club sandwich & fries were particularly good. Our server Nicholas was so polite and friendly, a credit to your dining team. Next morning we checked out with reception & the concierge team took us to Waterloo train station in the hotels car, such a treat! Big shout out to Rodrigo the doorman who helped take pics of us with the car, then another thank you to Bilal our driver who loaded all our luggage, he was so friendly and chatty after we bombarded him with questions on the journey.  Overall I have to say this was the best London experience I have ever had and will cherish it forever. Well done Rosewood, you did not disappoint."

"We were very excited to stay at the much anticipated Chancery Rosewood. This property is in an excellent location at Grosvenor Square, very chill and not too busy but a close walk to action and some of central London’s best restaurants near Berkeley Square. The building decor is warm and contemporary wrapped in mid-century luxury, with rounded corners and modest art and furniture. We found the aesthetic very relaxing and luxe, one of the favourite aspects of our stay. All of the staff werewarm, friendly and well trained to deliver service from the standpoint of “yes”. Concierge team was very responsive before arrival to assist planning and reservations which was appreciated. There was a hiccup with one of the recommendations as the experience was not at all what we were looking for (there was a themed night and set menu which we didn’t know about or want, and the restaurant had no patrons except us until 9 pm, and then the entire restaurant filled with young early 20’s influencers who seemed to be sponsored to make content - we wanted a luxe and elegant dinner with a bit of vibe) so I will say that perhaps some of the concierge would benefit from some seasoning and should have been a bit more careful on recommendations - we felt we lost a night. We stayed in the Grosvenor junior suite - a good sized room for two overlooking the zen green space of the square. Massages in the spa were good. We found the spa area a bit smaller than ideal. Late check out to accommodate was graciously allowed. Overall, the Chancery Rosewood generally met the very high expectations of a luxury property in central London at this price point. We will certainly return."

"Having spent 30 years in the luxury hotels and private estate management sector, including my formative years at the Waldorf Astoria and Place Hotel in New York, I view hospitality through a highly critical, professional lens. I don’t look for grand gestures, I look for the quiet luxury of perfect timing, intuitive service, and the heartbeat of the house. For my wife’s birthday, we chose The Chancery Rosewood for a special trip to London, and I can say with professional certainty that this team is operating at the pinnacle of the hospitality craft. They didn't just host us, they looked after us. From the moment we arrived, the service was nothing short of exceptional. The staff went above and beyond to ensure every detail of our stay was seamless. It’s rare to find a team that strikes such a perfect balance between professional efficiency and genuine warmth. We felt truly looked after throughout our visit. The drivers, Rafiq and Francis, were impeccable, and they drove us to and from the hotel. Henan Santos at the front door was a true gentleman, always greeting us with a smile and warmth. Henan possesses that rare old-world charm blended with modern efficiency. He manages the hotel's threshold with grace and a proactive approach that makes a guest feel instantly secure and at home. Kevin was very kind and professional, greeting us upon arrival, escorting us to the suite, and explaining all the hotel amenities and the suite. Beyond the public spaces, the housekeeping team demonstrated exacting attention to detail, which I personally appreciate. My wife’s favorite was a small green leather strap to keep cables organized, and mine was a glasses cloth and a green leather bookmark for my book. Our suite was maintained as a pristine sanctuary. The invisible service was so well executed that the room felt refreshed by magic rather than by a team. Breakfast is often the most overlooked meal, but at Serra restaurant, it was the absolute highlight of our stay. The atmosphere is serene, welcoming, and perfectly choreographed. The experience begins with Seher, the host. In a busy London morning, she manages the floor with a grace and composure that is rare. Her greeting is warm, personal, and sets an immediate tone of refined hospitality. She doesn’t just seat guests, she welcomes them home. Our server, John, provided service that was both seamless and sincere. The management presence on the floor was equally impressive. However, I must give a truly special mention to Jordan Barrins, Assistant Restaurant Manager, who is an absolute standout. In my 30 years in the luxury sector, I have rarely encountered an Assistant Manager with such an instinctive, high-level command of guest relations. Jordan is the definition of a service leader. He doesn't just manage the floor, he elevates it. He has a gift for connecting with guests on a personal level that feels sincere, sophisticated, and deeply authentic. He anticipates needs before they are even whispered, a level of intuition that usually takes decades to cultivate. He has a natural charisma and a genuine ownership of the room that reminded me of the very best Service Managers I’ve worked with. He is, quite simply, an asset to the Rosewood brand. Jack, the other Assistant Restaurant Manager, was the perfect complement, quietly efficient, highly observant, and ensured the logistics of the room moved with Swiss-watch precision It is clear that the Restaurant General Manager, Camille Lemmery, is a formidable leader. You can feel her influence in the team’s cohesion and their shared pride in the guest experience. To maintain this level of exacting standards while keeping the atmosphere warm and approachable is no small feat. It also takes a visionary leader to cultivate such a high standard of quiet luxury and genuine human connection. Camille has built a world-class culture here, and it is evident in every interaction. To the whole team at Chancery Rosewood in London, a big thank you for reminding me why I love this industry. You are the gold standard. For those who understand and appreciate true five-star service, this is the place to be. We left not just impressed, but inspired. For all of our future trips to London, we will stay only at the Chancery Rosewood Hotel."
