PB hotel design editorial

Facing Hyde Park from the eastern edge of Park Lane, where the treeline of one of London's great royal parks frames the view west, the building that became The Dorchester was designed by William Curtis Green and completed in 1931 — a reinforced concrete structure clad in pale reconstituted stone, its symmetrical facade and projecting cornice giving it the composed authority of an Edwardian palace arrived slightly late to its own era. Across its 250 rooms and suites, the interiors carry the layered quality of a property that has been decorated and redecorated by successive hands rather than conceived as a single design statement, with the traditional register of the guest rooms — camel and champagne damask curtains, lacquered chinoiserie chests, gilt-framed mirrors doubling the light from Park Lane — sitting comfortably alongside newer interventions. The most striking of those interventions is the Bar, redesigned by Thierry Despont with a hammered bronze ceiling, curved banquettes in teal velvet, serpentine patterned carpet, and emerald bar stools at a backlit brass counter — an atmosphere closer to a Parisian boîte of the 1930s than anything conventionally British. The fine dining room housing Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester takes a cooler position, its oak-panelled walls and fibre-optic curtain centrepiece framing tables set with softly upholstered grey armchairs, the whole room pitched at a considered calm that lets the cooking carry the drama.

The Dorchester Reviews

"There are luxury hotels, and then there are legondary hotels that represent the very spirit of a city. The Dorchester belongs firmly in the latter category. Its location in Mayfair, overlooking Hyde Park, is among the most prestigious and beautiful in London — elegant, refined, and wonderfully central to everything that makes the city special. From the moment one arrives beneath the famous canopy, there is a sense of entering a world of timeless glamour and quiet sophistication. Our Belgravia Suite was absolutely magnificent — residential in style and lavishly appointed, with sumptuous furnishings, an extraordinary bed, a true dressing room and a richly marbled bathroom that felt more like a private home than a hotel suite. Every detail reflected comfort, tradition, and understated luxury. The food and beverage experience was equally impressive. Both The Grill and The Promenade embody the classic grand hotel tradition at its finest: opulent rooms, polished service, and an atmosphere that feels unmistakably “London.” Breakfast each morning became an occasion rather than simply a meal. What ultimately sets The Dorchester apart, however, is the service. Every wish seemed anticipated before it was spoken, every preference remembered, every interaction delivered with warmth, grace, and absolute professionalism. In an age where many luxury hotels strive to be fashionable or minimalist, The Dorchester remains gloriously confident in offering something far rarer — genuine old-world hospitality executed at the highest possible level. For travelers considering London’s great luxury hotels, The Dorchester offers something uniquely special: the perfect balance of prestige, tradition, comfort, and impeccable personal service. It remains one of the truly iconic hotel experiences in the world."

"We've just come back from staying at The Dorchester and having aternoon tea. It was lovely and we would highly recommend the whole experience. We did have a couple of issues but they were very quickyly resolved and a big thanks to all concerned. We were in room 514 overlooking Hyde Park, it was soooo quite... The bed was huge and comfy, really didnt want to get out of it.. room was spotless and it was so nice to be able to get onto the balcony.. There's tea and a real kettle and a Nespresso in the room. Wish all premium hotels had these, thing is with Nespresso we just dont get the attraction !!!! jar of Gold Blend would be much bettere.... Initially we didnt think there was any milk, but it seems its in the mini bar. One thing should have been better was the sweetner, I cant have sugar but the sweetner in the hotel really isnt very nice, hopefully they can get Canderell instead. Really do need to mention the toilet.... it has a heated seat and a remote control for flushing etc..... It was great..... The afternoon tea was the best we've ever had, just cannot fault it. When we arrived we were taken to meet the greeeter in The Promenade to confirm our dietary needs, really appreciated, as we said it was the best we've had. Of course nothing is perfect and the service at breakfast was very slow.. The food was delicious and seriously moreish but serevice was just so slow... we arived just before 8 and left at 9.20. Many guests arriiving after us were served much quicker. Seemed to us our order was probably overlooked, not a major issue but in a hotell of this quality the service should have been better.. So the big question would we return.. Oh yes, just working out the date. Many people do think premium hotels are somewhat snooty, we've never experienced this and especially not here, all the staff were really great and made us feel really welcome as if we were there only guess. We would like to particularly thank Gabriel in The Promenade when we had our tea, MIkaela also in The Promenade, Camilla at reception and especially Donato, front desk manager. We really did enjoy our stay and look forward to next time."
