PB hotel design editorial

Dark grey handmade brick, laid in a fine Flemish bond and interrupted at ground level by ornate brass fretwork screens, gives The Guardsman its distinctive presence on Buckingham Gate — a street that runs, almost literally, in the shadow of the Palace. The building is a purpose-built contemporary structure rather than a conversion, its seven floors stepping back toward a rooftop terrace in a massing that defers to its Victorian and Edwardian neighbours without mimicking them. The brass detailing at street level, glowing warmly against the charcoal brickwork at dusk, sets up the interior register precisely: this is a hotel that understands its address. Inside, the atmosphere tilts toward a well-appointed private members' club rather than conventional hotel design. The lounge takes its cues from the library end of that tradition — buttoned velvet sofas in warm grey, burnt-orange club chairs, walnut shelving lined with books, and a coffered ceiling detailed with concentric plaster mouldings and concealed uplighting that deepens the amber tone of the room after dark. The restaurant carries a brass-balustraded spiral staircase as its centrepiece, surrounded by dark lacquered dining tables, green leather barrel chairs, and a gallery wall of gilt-framed oils. Guestrooms shift to a cooler, more composed palette — chevron oak floors, upholstered leather bed frames, and layered curtains in gold and slate — calibrated to feel residential rather than institutional, which, given the forty-odd rooms across the property, they largely succeed in doing.

"Firstly the staff are amazing! Our honest opinion is that the hotel based on our room was satisfactory but no way worthy of 5 stars ( four at a push) Our room could definitely do with a refresh and the cleanliness of the bathroom was satisfactory, also the shower was not ideal as it’s a walk in, resulting in water everywhere!!"

"Great hotel, exceptionally clean and stylish rooms and very friendly collaborators at the reception - especially Anna and Bovas were very kind and helpful!"

"We stayed here in mid May. The room was quite small for two people especially considering the price. It was also rather warm in the room — the windows don’t open (“health and safety” we were told) and the air conditioning was fixed at a max of 18. The staff was quite kind and accommodating and brought us a small fan. Did not eat here so cannot comment on the restaurant. Lots of options nearby. The bathroom was nice with heated floors and lovely shower. Lighting was a bit dark in the bathroom for getting ready. There is a Nespresso machine and water kettle with complimentary tea or coffee pods I appreciated. The blackout drapes were fantastic — set an alarm if you have to wake up for an appointment. It t was also wonderfully quiet in the halls. So, in all, a mixed bag leaning towards a decent review but one can probably find better choices for less money and larger rooms."

"Clean and well presented room in a perfect location. The service of all the staff was absolutely flawless, they are a credit to the hotel. The deposit was returned to my bank the next day after checkout which was really good as some hotels can take days. The only thing I will say is that as a member, I believe we were entitled to a ‘welcome amenity’ as well as welcome drinks but I don’t believe we received this?"
