PB hotel design editorial

Great Eastern Street was already the spine of London's creative migration eastward when Innocent Houghton's brick-and-concrete building was fitted out in 2006 as The Hoxton Shoreditch — the first hotel from Shawn Levy's group and, in many ways, the property that established what an east London hotel could be before anyone had thought to ask the question. The five-storey facade, warm London stock brick banded with dark grey concrete spandrels, sits without apology among the neighbourhood's mix of Victorian warehouses and later commercial infill, its steel-framed entrance canopy the only gesture toward ceremony. Inside, the interiors draw a clear line between the deliberately rough and the carefully considered. The lobby arranges mustard and burgundy leather armchairs around a carved stone chimneypiece set against exposed brick, a double-ring chandelier of glass rods hanging above in a move that pulls the register upward without abandoning the industrial warmth below. Guestrooms — 210 in total across five floors — deploy parquet herringbone floors, tufted tan leather wingback chairs, navy chevron-quilted headboards, and Anglepoise lamps at oak writing desks: a shorthand for a certain kind of self-possessed Shoreditch resident that felt fresh at the time and has since been widely imitated. The ground-floor restaurant, fitted with crimson banquette booths, exposed ducting, and pendant factory lights over salvaged brick walls, reinforced the hotel's proposition that a genuinely useful neighbourhood bar could coexist with a bedroom offer priced for the design-conscious traveller.

"Great location close to metro stations and attractions. Comfortable bed. Staff was very friendly and helpful. We asked for extra blanket for our child and night staff Ioana brought it straight away. Decent room size for short city break. They also had a baggage hold service available which was great."

"My husband and I very rarely get a break from work. When we do we love to visit The Barbican, Museums for various Exhibitions and The Southbank Centre. The Hoxton Shoreditch is the perfect place to do that from alongside being close to some very entertaining Bars (and a little Karaoke if that floats your boat). Rianna and Angelica always both make us feel so welcome whenever we visit. We obviously prefer some rooms to others but overall always have a great stay because the team are so attentive and professional. We are always grateful for the time we get to spend there."

"the location is great as is the decor but thats where it ENDS. There is zero genuine hospitality let alone customer service. There was a dirty towel in my room, drilling for a short period, the roof top was closed for a private event during my stay and then I saw a mouse in the lobby restaurant during my dinner there. They tried to charge me for the dinner and have sent me several separate emails to apologise for the drilling, explain they called pest control and that they escalated the rude restaurant staff to senior management. My 4 night stay for £1.3k for was effectively a training opportunity for them vs me receiving hospitality as a valued customer.... Could be good for other guests but if you don't fancy being a ginny pig stay in any of the other MANY shoreditch hotels....Oh I was also so fed up with the issues during my stay and lack of service I never mentioned the towel to them..."

"The service was amazing, Angelica helped me with recommendations to some great restaurants and fun places to visit while on my stay. The room was clean and up to standard. Pretty quiet. I was able to make a coffee with the kettle that's in the room. The location is great it has a tube nearby. The price is okay for the room I booked. The atmosphere very chill."
