PB hotel design editorial

Great Eastern Street was already the spine of London's creative migration eastward when Innocent Houghton's brick-and-concrete building was fitted out in 2006 as The Hoxton Shoreditch — the first hotel from Shawn Levy's group and, in many ways, the property that established what an east London hotel could be before anyone had thought to ask the question. The five-storey facade, warm London stock brick banded with dark grey concrete spandrels, sits without apology among the neighbourhood's mix of Victorian warehouses and later commercial infill, its steel-framed entrance canopy the only gesture toward ceremony. Inside, the interiors draw a clear line between the deliberately rough and the carefully considered. The lobby arranges mustard and burgundy leather armchairs around a carved stone chimneypiece set against exposed brick, a double-ring chandelier of glass rods hanging above in a move that pulls the register upward without abandoning the industrial warmth below. Guestrooms — 210 in total across five floors — deploy parquet herringbone floors, tufted tan leather wingback chairs, navy chevron-quilted headboards, and Anglepoise lamps at oak writing desks: a shorthand for a certain kind of self-possessed Shoreditch resident that felt fresh at the time and has since been widely imitated. The ground-floor restaurant, fitted with crimson banquette booths, exposed ducting, and pendant factory lights over salvaged brick walls, reinforced the hotel's proposition that a genuinely useful neighbourhood bar could coexist with a bedroom offer priced for the design-conscious traveller.

The Hoxton Shoreditch, London Reviews

"From the rock hard bed and pillows, to the very small and spartan bathroom; “industrial” is the correct description of this hotel. The one bright spot is that it has a decent restaurant and bar downstairs. After experiencing other hotels around London, such as The Wellesley, The Hoxton was a huge disappointment. When we requested wash cloths, the hotel staff gave a smart-alec remark that “they don’t supply them as it is not a normal thing at London hotels.” He should have stated that it is not a normal thing at low-end London hotels, which The Hoxton definitely is. If you’re a young adult on a tight budget, this hotel may appeal to you. If you are an experienced traveler, that has enjoyed impeccable service t great hotels; don’t even think about it. The rooms are not very clean, the HVAC system doesn’t work properly, and security at the property is a joke."

"This is a wonderful little hotel with a friendly staff and very good service. Location is very convenient being a short walk to the Northern line, and a 10 minute walk to Liverpool Street station and the Bishopsgate business district."

"Situated in a great location close to Old Street tube station. Within walking distance of lots of great historical places and shops and also close to London the hotel was lovely when we stepped inside very welcoming lovely lounge area and restaurant. The rooftop Terrace was also very sought after. The rooms were very clean and tidy and very nice."

"The Hoxton is very well placed for travel from King's Cross and St Pancras. This is a lively part of London with lots of local places to eat. The hotel is super friendly and has an excellent roof top bar with great views of London. The rooms are well appointed and very good value in London."

"We had such a lovely experience at The Hoxton Shoreditch, and a huge part of that was down to the incredible team. The staff truly went above and beyond - especially Amiyah and Angelica, who made our stay feel so personal from start to finish. One of us arrived early from the airport and we were kindly accommodated with an early check-in, which made such a difference after travelling. When we got to the room, we were greeted with a thoughtful card and a lovely surprise - such a small gesture, but it genuinely made the stay feel special and memorable. Communication throughout was seamless, check-in was completely flawless, and every interaction felt warm and genuine. It’s rare to come across this level of care and attention to detail, and it really stood out. In a world that’s becoming increasingly automated, it’s these human touches that make all the difference. The team should be incredibly proud - this is exactly the kind of service that keeps people coming back. Thank you again, and I really hope Amiyah and Angelica get the recognition they deserve! I’ll definitely be back again Amber"
