PB hotel design editorial

Four stucco-fronted Victorian townhouses on Queen's Gate in South Kensington, their white-painted facades and balustraded balconies part of the same speculative terrace grammar that defined mid-nineteenth-century Kensington, were consolidated and converted into The Kensington long before the neighbourhood became a byword for discreet London luxury. The exterior, visible in the images, carries all the hallmarks of that era — bracketed cornices, tall sash windows, the columned porte-cochère that signals arrival without disrupting the residential scale of the street. The interiors work through deliberate contrast. Bedrooms designed by Alex Kravetz deploy chinoiserie wallpapers — pagodas and weeping willows in either sage and indigo or monochrome grey — framed within deep plaster panelling, the pattern contained and given weight by ebonised four-poster beds with lacquered gold detailing and carved Chippendale-style desk chairs that sit squarely in the Georgian-chinoiserie tradition. The bar moves in a different direction entirely: a coffered walnut ceiling, tiered crystal chandeliers, and velvet bar stools in deep teal give it the atmosphere of a private members' club from the 1930s rather than a hotel amenity. The restaurant takes a warmer, more bookish register — sage-painted shelving packed with volumes flanking the entrance, tub chairs in mustard and mint gathered around dark pedestal tables, a Stilnovo-inflected pendant casting warm light through the enfilade of rooms.

"Stayed at hotel about 10 years ago and it was lovely then but now it is gussied up and even nicer! Beautifully decorated - the common areas feel like a posh private residence...serene and relaxed... The nicest staff! Everyone friendly and helpful... Always big smiles... Rooms are clean and quiet and comfy... We had breakfast included and it was delicious - not a buffet - tables in gorgeous dining room - lots of options on the menu... IMO south kensington is the very best area - tube stop so convenient and easy, many cafes and restaurants and shops nearby, close to museums and harrods, charming streets of very well maintained residences, and so quiet! No horns honking or sirens...a delightful hush in the air... Do not hesitate booking here!"

"Yet another fabulous stay in the wonderful Kensington Hotel. It really is an absolute gem. It is such an elegant hotel but with a lovely, relaxed charm. The interior decor is beautiful - very soothing and refined. The food is delicious and the breakfast is one of the best I have had anywhere. Whether sitting in the Front Terrace and having a coffee or in the elegant Drawing Room enjoying a drink in the evening after a day sightseeing, its a very special place. Many thanks to Tom, Ali and all the staff who were so helpful and pleasant in making our stay such a lovely experience. We look forward to visiting again soon. Highly recommend."

"This hotel is a hidden gem. Located in a lovely neighborhood in South Ken, near tube stations, cafes, Hyde Park and other great places to visit this hotel is wonderful. If you want unassuming luxury in a high end area, stay here. The hotel is highly responsive to any requests/issues I had an excellent stay. Thank you to everyone."

"We loved our stay and without any doubt will be returning. A warm welcome from the doorman, Collin and staff at reception along with the excellent bar (the waiter who’s partner is from Gorseinon, thank you for taking good care of us) and restaurant staff are all a great asset to this beautiful hotel. We opted for a cosy room, it was clean and comfy. We were going to go into London in the evening, but the relaxing atmosphere here meant we spent a lovely evening in the bar and ordered a few dishes from the menu - we loved it! Breakfast was great too, a varied selection all delivered to your table. The hotel is tastefully designed with a slight quirkiness and stunning fresh flowers located around the public areas with log fires……I’m talking myself into booking another night already!!!"
