PB hotel design editorial

When it opened in 1865 on Portland Place, the building that became The Langham London was the largest and most technically advanced hotel in Europe — a vast Italianate palazzo designed by John Giles with over 300 rooms, hydraulic lifts, and en-suite bathrooms at a time when such provisions were considered extraordinary. That founding ambition has defined every subsequent chapter. The current interiors, refreshed under the direction of Richmond International, work across multiple registers: guest rooms in the main house settle into a palette of champagne, taupe, and warm grey, with herringbone oak floors, nailhead-trimmed upholstered headboards, and silk-weave curtains pooling at sash windows that frame views across Marylebone rooftops. Suites in the newer wing push into more theatrical territory — floor-to-ceiling arched windows dressed in deep mauve velvet, hand-painted chinoiserie panels, and lacquered cabinetry with geometric brass detailing. The Artesian bar, one of the most awarded cocktail bars in the world during its Ramos-era peak, carries its own design argument: bottle-green lacquered walls rising to plasterwork barrel vaults, a curved marble-topped counter fronted in ikat-woven fabric, oxblood leather stools, and a cantilevered brass chandelier of globe pendants that commands the entire room. Below ground, the CHUAN Body and Soul spa introduces an entirely different sensibility — dark stacked-slate walls flanking a mosaic-tiled pool, with a backlit ink-wash pine tree mural anchoring the far end in a quietly persuasive gesture toward its Chinese wellness philosophy.

"Perfect location to explore London. Breakfast could not be faulted. The staff were amazing in all areas of the hotel"

"Afternoon Tea was purchased for myself and family by a friend who lives in USA. It was a birthday gift and what a great choice she made! We have had afternoon tea at a few 5* hotels in London but never here so was really looking forward to this and i must say it didn't disappoint! Very warm welcome as soon as we arrived which is always a good start. We were slightly early for our booking but it wasn't a problem, our coats were taken and we were shown to our table. We were explained the menu and the choices and our order was taken shortly after for drinks, great selection of tea's and nice to see we were not charged extra for some of the flavours like we were in another hotel. The afternoon tea was absolutely delicious, great quality products, extra sandwiches were offered and we opted for the Coronation Chicken although it was a hard choice between that or the beef. The scones were delicious as were all the other cakes. The service was excellent, we were not rushed at all the only slight point i could make is that the drinks were a little slow in coming out when we needed refills. Thank you ! Would love to return one day."

"We enjoyed afternoon tea, time in the bar and breakfast the following morning. The food and service were excellent as was the location on Regent St. We would certainly return."

"booked a stay at The Langham to celebrate my birthday, expecting the quintessential five-star excellence this historic institution is known for. Unfortunately, the experience left me more frustrated than pampered, and it certainly didn't live up to the standards of other luxury hotels I’ve frequented in London and abroad. The Culinary Highs and Lows The dining experience was a tale of two extremes. The Highlight: The Langham Burger was truly fantastic—cooked to perfection and arguably the best part of the stay. The Disappointment: Breakfast was a major letdown. While the hash browns and sausages were decent, the bacon was almost inedible—tough, overcooked, and difficult to eat. For a hotel of this caliber, you expect every element of the most important meal of the day to be executed flawlessly. Restless Nights & Service Failures The biggest issue was the lack of sleep. At 3:00 AM on both Wednesday and Thursday, I was awoken by loud noises. In a premium five-star environment, peace and quiet are the bare minimum requirements, yet the disturbance persisted across two nights. The way the management handled the situation only added to the frustration: The Delay: After complaining about the noise, I was offered a different suite. However, the Duty Manager failed to respond for over 30 minutes. The Inconvenience: I eventually had to leave my room, travel down nine floors to reception, and complain in person just to get a resolution. When you are paying for luxury service, you shouldn’t have to hunt down staff in the middle of the night to have your concerns addressed. Final Verdict This was meant to be a special birthday treat, but it ended in disappointment. While the property is beautiful and the burger was a win, the poor breakfast quality, unacceptable noise levels, and sluggish management response times mean The Langham fell well short of its five-star reputation this time."
