PB hotel design editorial

Half Moon Street and its Georgian neighbours have always understood the art of the understated entrance, and The Mayfair Townhouse works precisely that seam — a row of interconnected Grade II-listed townhouses on Hill Street whose dark-painted facades and wrought-iron Juliet balconies give little away from the street. The 172-room hotel, which draws together multiple adjoining Georgian properties across five floors, was designed with interiors by the Irish hospitality group Press Up, with a brief to translate the eccentric energy of an aristocratic Mayfair residence into something liveable rather than museological. Inside, the decorative register tips toward knowing theatricality without tipping over into pantomime. Guestrooms carry navy-blue patterned carpets and tall upholstered headboards in near-black with red piping details, flanked by disc-shaped alabaster wall sconces and ebonised wardrobes with brass hardware — the overall atmosphere closer to a well-appointed gentleman's club than a conventional hotel room. The bar arrives with herringbone parquet, a coffered ceiling detailed in gilded latticework, and a full-scale jewelled peacock sculpture standing sentinel by the entrance screen, a piece of deliberate showmanship that sets the tone for the rest of the public spaces. The dining room, panelled in sage green with backlit mirror frames and Verner Panton-adjacent table lamps on white marble tops, pulls the whole thing back toward quiet sophistication — proof that the hotel knows exactly when to let the room breathe.

About

Introducing a new generation of lifestyle hotel delivering the unexpected in the heart of Mayfair; The Mayfair Townhouse. A stylish, imaginative home for the modern traveller, we redefine what it means to be a London hotel. Inspired by the whimsical characters of our past and present, the hotel is flamboyantly dressed, yet carefully understated. The Townhouse leaves all the frills behind and delivers the services of a high-end hotel in a warm, convivial setting. Embracing our whimsical roots, our rich heritage has been revived to create something remarkably memorable overlooking Green Park. Above all, we are Dandy, welcome to The Townhouse. Without the traditions of a regular hotel, there is no room at the Townhouse that has not been thoughtfully curated. The hotel bridges the gap between ritzy high-end lavish hotels and the corporate enterprise properties that currently stand in Mayfair. The aptly named Dandy Bar is the heart and soul of the Townhouse. This is where you’ll find refuge from the bustling streets of Mayfair.

"Almost perfect. The hotel room was clean, the bedding was excellent, the shower had the best water pressure I have ever had in Europe or the US, and the bath towels were terrific quality. But, the lack of storage shelves/hooks was terrible. The hotel would be perfect, but there was zero storage options. The double room had a great terrace, but no hooks for coats (a much needed item in England!) and no full size closet - so again, where does one hang a coat? And the bathroom which was wonderful otherwise had zero storage space. Not a single shelf for toiletry bags, not a medicine cabinet, not a single drawer. There was space for a nice shelf under the bathroom sink (which had no space on the sink to place necessary basics like a make up bag, a toothbrush and a deodorant). The solution was giving me a giant chair for all my necessary daily items, forcing one of us to crawl over the chair to get to bed. The small rooms wouldn't be an issue if there was one usable drawer (instead, there are two bedside tables, but no where to actually store a medicine pouch or anything). If the designer thought of function, these things would be easily fixed. So this is reason I won't stay there again - it was almost perfect, and can be if someone considers a person's need to hang some items and a place for some toiletry bags that almost all humans travel with. The rest was great."

"The receptionist who booked us in seemed unfriendly from our arrival. She looked at the screen from when we arrived without even looking at us once. She said she would need a Pre-authorization on our credit card for extras. When this happens your card details are held held but not charged BUT this hotel not only debited over £115 immediately for potential extras they also helped themselves to a DISCRETIONARY service charge of 5% - How can you agree that the service was great when you only just arrived? My wife was treating me for my Birthday and was paying for the 2 nights at a costly £975 total. She hadn’t transferred more than this on her card at this time, but her bank app informed her once we paid, she was over £140 overdrawn. That's when we realized they had taken the extra money - not impressive just money grabbing!! I stay many times a year in hotels and I have NEVER been charged on the card for pre-authorization before and the service charge has always been added at the end of the stay. I said to the woman and her Manager that pre-authorization is not the same as taking a deposit but she shrugged her shoulders and he said that these were the rules - both disinterested. I will say I have stayed at this hotel before and thoroughly enjoyed it but never encountered this attitude They definitely won't be having our business again and I will tell my friends not to bother"
