PB hotel design editorial

Peter Marino had never designed a hotel in the UK before The Peninsula London, which makes this 2023 arrival on Grosvenor Place feel like something of a reckoning — one of architecture's most opinionated decorators finally turning his attention to a city that rewards exactness. Hopkins Architects delivered a purpose-built limestone facade that earns its place between Hyde Park Corner and Wellington Arch without pastiche or apology, its classical proportions stepping up through a planted terrace to a glazed rooftop that catches the light above the treeline of Hyde Park. From certain rooms, the bronze horses of the Wellington Arch fill the window frame like a painting hung by the city itself. Inside, Marino's signature layering — private-residence comfort transplanted into hotel scale — runs through all 190 rooms and suites. Honey onyx bathrooms glow with an amber warmth, mahogany-panelled dressing rooms carry the atmosphere of a well-appointed Mayfair flat, and the bespoke furnishings throughout, including the dark lacquered bed benches and onyx-slab coffee tables visible in the guest rooms, feel chosen rather than specified. The indoor pool beneath its coffered skylight brings a Beaux-Arts bathhouse mood, its mosaic friezes evoking Hyde Park's seasonal palette. On the roof terrace, teak and blue cushions pull the eye over the treetops toward a city that has been very selective about who gets to look at it from this angle.

"After three nights at The Peninsula London, I can honestly say I have found my new favorite hotel in London. I originally booked the hotel following my sister's recommendation, she has been staying exclusively at The Peninsula since her first visit and now I completely understand why. Every inch of the hotel feels incredibly well thought through. From the design to the technology, every detail seems perfectly considered: every button, every switch, every amenity is exactly where it should be. It's rare to see this level of attention to detail executed so flawlessly. What truly makes the hotel exceptional, however, is the service. The team is genuinely warm, kind, and attentive the kind of service that defines true luxury. In a city where many hotels charge extremely high prices yet offer little beyond the room itself, The Peninsula delivers the complete experience. The hotel is beautiful, new, elegant, and impeccably run, but it's the people who make it truly special. Highly, highly recommended."

"We’ve been lucky enough to stay at some lovely hotels but The Peninsula supersedes them all. The hotel was beautiful, the staff treated us so well and the little touches felt so special. It was an anniversary and they upgraded us to a bigger room and also had a handmade chocolate cake and welcome card for us upon arrival. The bathroom was incredibly luxurious and we enjoyed every moment using it. We took advantage of the 2 mile luxury car journeys and Gurpreet was a delightful driver who made our experience feel so special. Sicle (I have probably misspelled his name!) welcomed us at check in and was just delightful. He wheeled our luggage up to the room and waved to us everytime we walked past reception. I am envious of anyone who has a stay upcoming at The Peninsula and we really hope to come and stay again before the end of the year! Thank you to you all for making our stay so memorable"

"Our stay at The Peninsula London last weekend reaffirmed why the Peninsula brand remains one of our first choices globally — and why we are returning again The in-room technology is flawlessly integrated: lighting, climate, drapery, and service all controlled intuitively without ever feeling complicated. The cigar concierge lounge is among the finest hotel cigar environments in Europe. Proper ventilation, serious selection, knowledgeable staff, and a setting that feels both discreet and elevated. Combined with the rooftop views toward Hyde Park and Wellington Arch, the property delivers a strong sense of place that very few new London hotels achieve. Service throughout the stay was polished, warm, and highly professional. However — and this is important — there was a significant lapse that management should address. We pre-booked both arrival and departure transportation through the hotel and clearly communicated that we had three large suitcases. At 4:00 AM on departure, the vehicle provided could not accommodate our luggage. This resulted in an unnecessary and stressful scramble to secure our own Uber to Heathrow. For a property operating at this level, with advance notice and premium transfer pricing, this kind of logistical oversight should simply not happen. Early-morning departures are when guests most rely on precision. We share this not to diminish the experience — which was otherwise excellent — but because Peninsula positions itself at a standard where details define trust. Despite this misstep, we will return. The property, the design, the cigar program, and the overall sophistication make it a compelling London base for us. We hope on our next visit the transportation coordination reflects the same level of excellence evident everywhere else in the hotel. Looking forward to being back this weekend — ideally with flawless execution from start to finish."

"Excellent hotel, new and very comfortable spacious rooms where technology is very much used and applied. Very kind staff and excellent service, rates are on the high end and location is adequate and an extremely rich breakfast. I would not hesitate to go back there again."

"My best friend and I stayed at the Peninsula for three nights in January. I've traveled to over 50 countries. Simply put...The Peninsula is outstanding. The Property - Modern, large rooms that have the latest tech integrations. Heated floors, electronic toilets, lights that can be programmed in each room. We had room 301 which directly looked over the Wellington arch. The linens were all new and luxurious...I couldn't find a stain anywhere...and I looked! The Service -Every single member of staff went above and beyond to make our stay relaxing and memorable. Special shout outs to Isaac, Sonia and Gay Emma who arranged for birthday cake for my friend and Chelsea FC cookies for me after they discovered I was a big fan. Room service was also very fast. I would stay here again in a heartbeat...truly an amazing experience"
