PB hotel design editorial

When César Ritz commissioned architects Charles Mewès and Arthur Davis to design his London flagship in 1906, he asked them to bring Paris to Piccadilly — and they did so with architectural conviction. The building's Norwegian granite base and Bath stone facade draw directly from the Louis XVI manner of the Place Vendôme, making The Ritz London the first steel-framed building in the city to wear the clothes of a French hôtel particulier. Across 136 rooms and suites arranged over seven floors, the interior language established at opening has been preserved and periodically restored rather than reinvented, giving the property a consistency rare among London's grands hôtels. The restaurant remains the most arresting space in the building — a Louis XVI dining room of rose marble pilasters, gilt-bronze chandeliers, trompe l'oeil ceiling panels, and floor-length silk swags that doubles its apparent depth in the mirrored end wall, the Green Park visible through tall windows on the opposite side. Guest rooms divide between the coral-and-cream warmth of the larger suites, furnished with Louis XVI–style painted case pieces and floral-upholstered fauteuils, and the cooler powder-blue register of the standard rooms, where tufted ottomans and crystal girandole wall sconces maintain the period register without tipping into pastiche. The Rivoli Bar offers the single deliberate departure — a rich Art Deco interior of amber lacquer, Murano glass pendants, and diamond-panelled bar front that arrived in the 1990s and has since earned its own devoted following.

About

Opened by renowned hotelier Cesar Ritz in 1906, The Ritz today still retains all the glamour and excitement synonymous with this world famous hotel. Perfectly located in a landmark position on Piccadilly in the heart of London's West End, the 136 room luxury hotel is ideally placed to suit both business and leisure visitors alike. Now totalling 111 bedrooms and 25 suites, the elegant rooms combine the original Louis XVI style interiors with modern day technology. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful rooms in the world, The Michelin-starred Ritz Restaurant features a magnificent frescoed ceiling with west facing windows overlooking Green Park beyond. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, with a 'Live at The Ritz' Dinner Dance on Friday and Saturday evenings. The Ritz offers, most famously, daily Afternoon Tea service which has been popular since the hotel first opened. The stylishly updated Rivoli Bar was designed by Tessa Kennedy and features Art Deco styled interiors. Open daily with a bar menu. The Ritz London is a Grade II star listed building and in 2002 became the first hotel to receive the Royal Warrant from his Royal Highness The Prince of Wales for banqueting and catering services.

"Following a wonderful stay last September, my wife and I were fortunate to celebrate my 73rd birthday with another weekend stay at the Ritz from the 14th of March to the 16th.. And as it coincided with Mother’s Day, a double celebration. Our two and a half year old grandson and his parents who live in London joined us on Sunday to celebrate two Mums! As before when I reviewed the Ritz, everything was perfect and if possible even more so. We cannot pretend to be multi millionaires (unfortunately!) but were treated as such by the incredibly friendly and always courteous staff. You are greeted with “Welcome home”, and that’s exactly what it feels like. Nothing is too much trouble and the staff are always willing to share their extensive knowledge of food wine, London and a multitude of other subjects .It’s lovely to be addressed by name, and have things such as food allergies etc. remembered and automatically applied from visit to visit. Although the building is going through a massive development programme at the moment we had no disturbances at all during our stay – the taxi drop off point has switched from Arlington Street to the centre of the Piccadilly frontage (Uber still directs to Arlington Street so worth mentioning to your driver, though most probably know already), and the windows of the magnificent restaurant overlooking Green Park have been tactfully frosted to avoid a view of a building material lift and rubbish chute in typical Ritz style. When the Palm Court was renovated a few years ago, the entrance was concealed with the ultimate hoarding – all mirrors and gilt! And as yet no disturbance at all to the grand ground floor spaces, witnessed by myself on Mother’s Day when my grandson developed a new game of going up the Grand Staircase, three flights, then fortunately down in the lift, only touching (briefly) the emergency call button once!! After the fifth round I handed him over to his mum for a few more circuits. And when you have a little chap who enjoys pointing at chandeliers, what better place!"
