PB hotel design editorial

When César Ritz commissioned architects Charles Mewès and Arthur Davis to design his London flagship in 1906, he asked them to bring Paris to Piccadilly — and they did so with architectural conviction. The building's Norwegian granite base and Bath stone facade draw directly from the Louis XVI manner of the Place Vendôme, making The Ritz London the first steel-framed building in the city to wear the clothes of a French hôtel particulier. Across 136 rooms and suites arranged over seven floors, the interior language established at opening has been preserved and periodically restored rather than reinvented, giving the property a consistency rare among London's grands hôtels. The restaurant remains the most arresting space in the building — a Louis XVI dining room of rose marble pilasters, gilt-bronze chandeliers, trompe l'oeil ceiling panels, and floor-length silk swags that doubles its apparent depth in the mirrored end wall, the Green Park visible through tall windows on the opposite side. Guest rooms divide between the coral-and-cream warmth of the larger suites, furnished with Louis XVI–style painted case pieces and floral-upholstered fauteuils, and the cooler powder-blue register of the standard rooms, where tufted ottomans and crystal girandole wall sconces maintain the period register without tipping into pastiche. The Rivoli Bar offers the single deliberate departure — a rich Art Deco interior of amber lacquer, Murano glass pendants, and diamond-panelled bar front that arrived in the 1990s and has since earned its own devoted following.

About

Opened by renowned hotelier Cesar Ritz in 1906, The Ritz today still retains all the glamour and excitement synonymous with this world famous hotel. Perfectly located in a landmark position on Piccadilly in the heart of London's West End, the 136 room luxury hotel is ideally placed to suit both business and leisure visitors alike. Now totalling 111 bedrooms and 25 suites, the elegant rooms combine the original Louis XVI style interiors with modern day technology. Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful rooms in the world, The Michelin-starred Ritz Restaurant features a magnificent frescoed ceiling with west facing windows overlooking Green Park beyond. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, with a 'Live at The Ritz' Dinner Dance on Friday and Saturday evenings. The Ritz offers, most famously, daily Afternoon Tea service which has been popular since the hotel first opened. The stylishly updated Rivoli Bar was designed by Tessa Kennedy and features Art Deco styled interiors. Open daily with a bar menu. The Ritz London is a Grade II star listed building and in 2002 became the first hotel to receive the Royal Warrant from his Royal Highness The Prince of Wales for banqueting and catering services.

The Ritz London Reviews

"An appalling and deeply condescending experience. My wife and daughter arrived at the Ritz on a cold, rainy day, soaked and freezing after being caught unprepared by the weather. They were dressed somewhat casually and hastily, simply wearing whatever extra layers they had with them, and only wished to come inside for tea, warm up, and wait for me. Instead of being welcomed with the elegance and hospitality one expects from a hotel of this reputation, they were stopped at the entrance by a porter behaving more like a nightclub bouncer. He informed them, in an extremely condescending manner, that there was a dress code. What made the situation even more disappointing is the obvious inconsistency in how such rules appear to be applied. One regularly sees celebrities, influencers, and VIP guests admitted in outfits far less appropriate than what my family was wearing that day. True luxury is not about policing appearances with arrogance; it is about grace, discretion, empathy, and hospitality. Sadly, this experience reflected none of those qualities. The Ritz no longer seems to embody the timeless elegance and class for which it was once renowned.”"

"I am sorry but for the price the old room ammneities and fittings are amajor let down. The smell of cigarette smoke that lingers I find foul. Service is great but it is just poor value"

"Our son chose the Ritz London for his coming-of-age birthday. He wanted a special, elegant and special place. It was truly a choice that fully confirmed his expectations. From the moment we entered the hotel, we felt like we were stepping into another world, the interior fragrance, live piano music and the beauty of the interior design captivated us. Dinner in the main restaurant was perfect, the taste of the dishes, the impeccable service, the ballroom like a ballroom from the good old days were a story. The next day we enjoyed an extremely elegant afternoon tea and completed it with an evening at the opera. The room was completed with all kinds of details from chocolate and fine candies, quality cosmetics, beautiful furniture, so the accommodation was at its best. We left with the most beautiful memories and the desire to return."

"A classic luxury experience with that old school royal vibe. The service is super attentive and makes you feel really special and the famous afternoon tea is definitely worth it. The hotel looks stunning and elegant but some parts feel a bit traditional rather than modern. Overall it’s expensive but for the experience and atmosphere it’s something you should try at least once."
