PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Thames from Victoria Embankment, where Cleopatra's Needle stands sentinel on the riverbank below, the white Portland stone facade of the Savoy has commanded this stretch of London since 1889 — making it the first luxury hotel in Britain to offer electric lights and lifts throughout. Built on the site of the medieval Savoy Palace by impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte, with later Edwardian additions overseen by architects T.E. Collcutt and Arthur Mackmurdo, the property carries two distinct architectural personalities: the art deco entrance court on the Strand side, famously the only road in Britain where traffic drives on the right, and the Embankment elevation visible here, its mansard roofline and Beaux-Arts detailing illuminated warmly against the dusk. The 267-room interior holds both registers in productive tension. Some suites follow the deeply traditional English country house manner — mahogany four-poster beds with serpentine headboards, crystal chandeliers suspended from plaster ceiling medallions, floral silk curtains in soft blues and pinks. Others, decorated by Pierre-Yves Rochon during the £220 million restoration completed in 2010, strike the more graphic note visible in the river-facing bedroom shown here: white panelled walls with lit display niches, dark walnut floors, and a burnt-orange geometric bedspread against cream linen. The Beaufort Bar and American Bar carry the deco sensibility forward, while the panelled dining room — its gilded plasterwork ceiling and red leather tub chairs unchanged in spirit since Escoffier cooked here — remains one of the great period rooms of London hospitality.

"Just WOW…. Myself and two friends stayed recently for a special birthday celebration. From arriving at the hotel and the moment we left we felt like royalty ( we didn’t want to the bubble to burst) The staff really do go above and beyond to make your experience so special … they truly do! Apon check in we got upgraded… we could have burst into tears with excitement when we see our room or should I say suite. The room was newly furbished… fresh, bright and immaculate. If I could have bottled up the fragrance of the room I would have. Savoy acknowledge it was a special celebration and we had a hand written note along with chocolate. Our view was over looking the Thames with the London eye and Big Ben in sight. We actually slept with the curtains open all night as we don’t want to shut out the view. We spent some time in the pool… very warm and clean followed by a few cocktails in the American Bar. We woke, went for an early morning walk and then arrived back for breakfast… Door staff welcomed us back ‘good morning welcome back’ so special. Savoy we all really appreciated our stay… it was a very rare trip for us to go on we will not hesitate to book again. Thank you to everyone for making it a trip to remember for a lifetime."

"We booked a night here for my wife’s 50th birthday along with tickets for Paddington at The Savoy theatre next door. We’ve been lucky enough to stay in some great 5* hotels but this was a different level. We arrived just before 3.00 and were impressed with check in which was welcoming, friendly and efficient. Our cases were taken at the door as we arrived by taxi and my wife loved her birthday being acknowledged with an upgraded room and we appreciated a short orientation of the communal areas of the hotel. The room wasn’t quite ready so we were shown through to the reading room and offered complimentary champagne & water before we quickly got a text advising our keys were now available. The room was stunning with all the touches you’d expect, Nespresso machine/complimentary soft drinks in fridge/robes & slippers etc. We used the leisure facilities (a beautiful warm pool) and enjoyed the room before walking across the road to the theatre. After the show, we’d booked a table for cocktails at The American Bar for 9.30 (we were told the performance would be completed by then) but it was nearer 10.00 when we arrived. Despite being busy, they had kept our table for us and we enjoyed a couple of fantastic cocktails listening to the live pianist. Not surprisingly, we slept well on the comfortable bed and the next morning checking out with the same person who checked us in the previous day was again friendly and efficient. Our overriding impression was the service that wasn’t stuffy like you might fear in a top end hotel but friendly and relaxed. Everyone we encountered acknowledged us with a smile & greeting and genuinely wanted us to have the best time. Obviously it’s not cheap (and for us probably a one off) but everyone should have the experience if they can, we’ll remember it forever."

"We stayed for one night as a couple. The check in staff were lovely, and the staff were friendly and very informative. On entering our superior room, we were a little disappointed by the size, particularly the bathroom. I’m very petite and could still touch the end of the bath with my feet, so it would likely feel too small for an average-height man. That said, the bed linen was beautiful, and the pillows and quilt gave us one of the best night’s sleep we’ve had in a hotel. The room temperature was perfect, and the complimentary soft drinks in the minibar were appreciated. We ate lunch in the hotel and the food was outstanding, with breakfast equally excellent. The Savoy offers an experience like no other, and although the room felt smaller than expected, it’s a minor detail in an otherwise exceptional stay. Five stars from us, and yes, we would return."

"We have returned from a wonderful three night stay at The Savoy. Everything was fantastic from breakfast in the gallery to drinks in the American Bar and dinner at the Grill. We stayed in the newly refurbished rooms with views of the gardens and Thames which were lovely. All the colleagues and managers were so kind, thoughtful and charming. We will definitely return."
