PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Knightsbridge and Pont Street, where a 1920s Beaux-Arts building curves gently toward Hyde Park, the case for Art Deco revival as a credible contemporary design language gets its most persuasive London argument. The Wellesley Knightsbridge, which opened in 2012 following an extensive conversion overseen by Fox Linton Associates, fits 36 rooms and suites into a former Tube station and office building whose terracotta-clad facade — deep burgundy arched windows framed in cream stone, visible in the images — sets the period register before you step inside. Fox Linton's interiors draw on 1920s and 1930s precedents with genuine conviction rather than pastiche. The Oval Restaurant, its curved walls clad in bronze-tinted mirror strips separated by gilded vertical ribs and crowned with a rose-quartz chandelier, carries the atmosphere of a transatlantic liner dining room. Guest rooms move between two distinct moods: one palette runs to champagne leather headboards, tufted upholstery, and blue-patterned wool carpet with gilt-legged tables in lacquered black; another shifts darker, with espresso-toned wall panels, black velvet sofas with white piping, and framed fashion photography evoking a Mayfair apartment of the late Jazz Age. The bar, wrapped in dark lacquered panels with brass grid detailing and a marble counter lit from below, completes an interior that treats the decade between the wars not as costume but as a fully inhabited design philosophy.

The Wellesley Knightsbridge Reviews

"This is not a non--smoking hotel because cigar smoke from the smoking room seeps into the elevators, upstairs hallways, and all of the rooms on the main floor including reception. It caused me to have several asthma attacks during our 4-night stay. We loved our room but had to go to another hotel nearby to have a drink after dinner and could never eat in the restaurant."

"I went to the hotel bar for a quick drink before going out for dinner. I asked 2 glasses of white wine to the barman. He suggested the Pouilly Fuisse to which i said ok, little did I know that he suggested the most expensive white wine by the glass of their entire wine card. Result: GBP 130 for the 2 glasses. Out of curiosity i checked the market value of that particular bottle (2023) and it showed 90 quid! They charge £23 for a glass of Veuve Cliquot and that costs 55/60 in a shop. When I complained to the food and bev manager, zero apology abt the barman's stunt, zero justification for the 65 quid per glass. I wont set foot in that hotel ever again! Christian Klein"

"Our cigar and cognac experience at The Wellesley was, without question, the highlight of our entire trip. While I’m the cigar enthusiast, my wife found herself enjoying the evening just as much as I did—something we didn’t necessarily expect, and a true testament to how thoughtfully the experience was curated. Danilo, your cigar aficionado, is an exceptional asset to the hotel. He began the evening with a detailed tour of the humidor, guiding us through the selection process and helping us choose cigars perfectly suited to our preferences. His depth of knowledge was evident at every step, and his engaging personality and natural sense of humor made the experience both informative and genuinely enjoyable. He elevated the evening further by pairing our cigars with exceptional scotch and cognac, and thoughtfully explained how certain sweets can enhance the flavor profile of a cigar. He then brought out an array of accompaniments—including chocolates, ginger crème brûlée, and cookies—which added a unique and memorable dimension to the experience. To finish, we were treated to a delicious port wine that capped off the evening perfectly. What could have been simply a luxury indulgence turned into a truly memorable and personal experience. Danilo’s professionalism and charisma left a lasting impression, and we sincerely hope he receives the recognition he deserves. We both agreed that we would gladly return to The Wellesley—not only for the hotel itself, but specifically to enjoy this experience again."
