PB hotel design editorial

Queen Street in the City of London sits at the intersection of two ancient trades — the vintners who worked the river wharves below and the mercers whose cloth halls once lined these lanes — and it is this medieval commercial heritage that gives Vintry & Mercer its organizing intelligence. Opened in 2019 within a purpose-built nine-storey building, the 92-room hotel was designed with interiors by Goddard Littlefair, the London studio whose work consistently finds a way to carry historical narrative through contemporary material choices without tipping into pastiche. The rooms deploy cartographic wallpaper — antique map fragments printed across pale grounds — alongside deep claret and aubergine velvet headboards finished with brass button detailing, the palette shifting slightly between room categories while holding the same mercantile richness throughout. Ebonised joinery with cerise-lined niches gives the darker rooms a jewel-box quality; larger categories open up to mustard channel-back chairs and sheer curtains filtering the City's grey light. Downstairs, the Vino bar wraps a dark-panelled counter in embossed silver fan-pattern fascia, oak barrels lining the back shelf in a nod to the vintners' trade, while globe pendants throw warm pools across buttoned stools in amber velvet. The rooftop restaurant, enclosed beneath a steel-framed glass pavilion, frames a dusk skyline of Portland stone cornices and tower cranes with mature olive trees planted along its terrace — an unexpectedly southern European gesture above one of London's oldest wards.

About

Vintry & Mercer is nestled at the heart of the City, among the livery halls, guilds and narrow streets that line the banks of the Thames. This is where past and present intersect, where the long traditions of trade and commerce come to life in the contemporary style of the 92 bespoke rooms and suites. Our inspiration comes from the historic trading guilds of the area. Vintry was the centre for London wine merchants, and Mercer was for noble textile sellers who specialised in fine silks and damasks. In the narrow streets near our hotel, this history perseveres. Yet the locale is now a destination for the modern traveller. It’s a place where architectural wonders share the cityscape with global powerhouses, alive with the bustle of commerce and conversation that reflect our first-class location at the centre of a turning world.

"Enjoyed our stay here as a couple. Room is small but beautifully decorated and well setup for everything you'll need. Staff were professional and courteous. Used both the rooftop bar and restaurant for breakfast, and experience in both was very positive. Didn't check out dinner or the gym. Would stay again."

"We had a wonderful stay at Vintry & Mercer and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. I had contacted the hotel before our arrival to arrange balloons and Prosecco for my partner’s birthday, and the team were incredibly helpful in making everything come together. From the moment we arrived, the reception and concierge staff were warm, welcoming and attentive. We were delighted to receive a complimentary room upgrade, and the room itself was beautiful, comfortable and impeccably clean. What really stood out were the thoughtful touches. The team personally delivered some treats to our room to wish my partner a happy birthday, which was such a kind gesture. Breakfast was also excellent, and every member of staff we encountered was friendly and professional. The combination of exceptional service, attention to detail and a lovely hotel made this a truly memorable stay. Thank you to everyone at Vintry & Mercer for helping make my partner's birthday so special. We would happily recommend the hotel to friends and family and look forward to returning."
