PB hotel design editorial

The Grade II-listed former Midland Bank building on King Street — one of Manchester's most distinguished Edwardian Baroque facades, its Portland stone elevation carved with beehive crests and elaborate cartouches visible above the original panelled mahogany entrance doors — gave Hotel Gotham both its identity and its name when it converted to hotel use in 2015. Designed by Edwin Lutyens's contemporary Richard Knill Freeman and completed in 1902, the building carries all the civic confidence of Edwardian commercial Manchester, its rusticated stonework and arched entrance archway now leading into something considerably darker in atmosphere. Squid Inc handled the interiors, translating the property's forty-plus rooms across its upper floors into a palette that draws on 1930s New York as much as Manchester's own mercantile past. Inside, the design vocabulary shifts decisively from the building's institutional gravity. Bedrooms are fitted with floor-to-ceiling black-and-white chevron carpets, deep-buttoned black leather headboards, faux-fur throws, and purple velvet tub chairs — a knowing, slightly theatrical glamour that suits the Gotham name without tipping into pastiche. Brass pendant desk lamps and chain-hung circular mirrors in aged gold continue the 1930s reference. The reception desk, surfaced in burnished brass sheet set against dark shelving lined with curiosities and vintage luggage, sharpens the mood further. The bar, lined in tufted tan leather banquettes, blackened steel-framed internal windows, and bare filament pendant lights, has the atmosphere of a private members' club operating somewhere just outside conventional time.

About

"The room is most definitely a showstopper, there's certainly no doubting the attention to detail that has gone into bringing this new Art Deco-themed venue to life in the former bank building at the top of King Street. It offers something you can't currently find on the Manchester scene with such extravagant and quirkily-themed interiors." Manchester Evening News

"My daughter bought two vouchers for afternoon tea off Wowcher for The Rex so we made an online booking and attended on a Sunday afternoon. The Rex is a lovely hotel and restaurant as we have been here once before. We were soon seated and we were given a box of tea samples to smell to choose our given tea.The afternoon tea arrived about 15 minutes later it was ever so well presented and very tasty.A special mention to the gent and the lady serving as they were unreal, they made you feel so welcome and came to the table so many times to make sure the tea was something special they really were a credit to The Rex.The only thing which was missing was the young lad playing the piano on our last visit he played and was a pleasure to listen to."

"Lovely boutique hotel which has a strange set up with the reception on the top floor. Rooms have a funky feel to them; the bed is comfy and the bathroom/shower is extraordinary. Worth it alone for the shower. The room itself is quite small but it was fine for one person. Excellent breakfast, and having the option for a continental or choosing hot food from a menu is a really nice addition. The hotel is in a quiet area during the day but not so quiet at night as there are a couple of bars opposite. Overall a lot smaller than it looks but it’s modern, clean and in a good area of Manchester."

"Have not been since the change from Gotham, service still very good room was the same but noticed it had been updated… stayed in the inner sanctum, the couple of niggles were the breakfast was not as good as it used to be… and the luxury smell of Gotham was missing! Still would visit again as love the location and the service was fabulous! Shout out to the bar team on the rooftop! Great cocktails!"
