PB hotel design editorial

The Grade II-listed former Midland Bank building on King Street — one of Manchester's most distinguished Edwardian Baroque facades, its Portland stone elevation carved with beehive crests and elaborate cartouches visible above the original panelled mahogany entrance doors — gave Hotel Gotham both its identity and its name when it converted to hotel use in 2015. Designed by Edwin Lutyens's contemporary Richard Knill Freeman and completed in 1902, the building carries all the civic confidence of Edwardian commercial Manchester, its rusticated stonework and arched entrance archway now leading into something considerably darker in atmosphere. Squid Inc handled the interiors, translating the property's forty-plus rooms across its upper floors into a palette that draws on 1930s New York as much as Manchester's own mercantile past. Inside, the design vocabulary shifts decisively from the building's institutional gravity. Bedrooms are fitted with floor-to-ceiling black-and-white chevron carpets, deep-buttoned black leather headboards, faux-fur throws, and purple velvet tub chairs — a knowing, slightly theatrical glamour that suits the Gotham name without tipping into pastiche. Brass pendant desk lamps and chain-hung circular mirrors in aged gold continue the 1930s reference. The reception desk, surfaced in burnished brass sheet set against dark shelving lined with curiosities and vintage luggage, sharpens the mood further. The bar, lined in tufted tan leather banquettes, blackened steel-framed internal windows, and bare filament pendant lights, has the atmosphere of a private members' club operating somewhere just outside conventional time.

About

"The room is most definitely a showstopper, there's certainly no doubting the attention to detail that has gone into bringing this new Art Deco-themed venue to life in the former bank building at the top of King Street. It offers something you can't currently find on the Manchester scene with such extravagant and quirkily-themed interiors." Manchester Evening News

"Themed hotel, breakfast was nice and staff we very good at breakfast, bar on top floor had bland food and took ages to arrive, would not eat there again, nice rooms, little bit tired, great location, worth it at £200-250 a room but i wouldnt pay more, there are better luxury hotels in Manchester, id also recommend you eat somewhere else unless its breakfast as its really not good at all."

"We stayed in room 104 which is a bank managers suite. Visually its a beautiful room, amazing high ceilings and copper bath in the room. The bathroom is not upto the standard of the aesthetic of the rest of the room, the shower delivered good performance but the handshower isnt able to be taken off the cradle which is annoying. Towels were not good quality, they felt old, not soft at all, same goes for the robes. We didnt dine in the restaurant so cannot comment on this. The bed was comfy enough, the pillows were too firm for our liking. The noise in the evening was awful, constant banging in the hallway or noise from the street meant we had an dreadful night sleep. The evelators are poor, small, slow and only 2 of them. I wouldnt reccomend, while the aesthetic of the room is nice it is incredibly overpriced for what it is."

"I recently celebrated my 50th birthday at Hotel Gotham, our stay there was outstanding from check in to check out. We had cocktails and drinks in the rooftop bar and had breakfast everything was 5 stars, the staff were attentive and friendly. The vibe of the hotel was quirky and art deco inspired our room was beautiful, bed very comfy and home comforts in the room included a Nespresso machine, dressing gowns and toiletries. We would both stay again in a heartbeat Gotham is a new favourite of mine to stay."

"Brilliant staff and brilliant bar. It was my friend’s birthday and the bar lady really looked after us. She even took photos for us and advised us of the patio areas outside. I love the decor of this bar and everything about it."
