PB hotel design editorial

A Victorian warehouse on the corner of a rain-slicked Northern Quarter street, its dark Accrington brick still carrying the grain of industrial Manchester, was the raw material from which The Cow Hollow Hotel was assembled. The entrance portal — limestone pilasters, rusticated surrounds — sits in deliberate contrast to the weathered facade above, announcing an interior more considered than the modest street frontage suggests. Ornamental iron window guards at ground level and planted stone sills across the upper floors give the building a domestic softness that keeps it from feeling institutional. Inside, the design layers materials with a collector's instinct rather than a decorator's restraint: stacked-slate feature walls in the bedrooms catch warm lamplight against low platform beds and louvred dark-wood shutters, while patterned kilim-style rugs ground the dark-stained timber floors. The bar area pulls in a different direction entirely — a white marble counter on darkened timber cabinetry, brass bar stools, arched gilt mirrors, and oversized tropical fronds that push the atmosphere toward something between a colonial club and a Soho members' house. A driftwood branch chandelier anchors the stairwell landing, steam-trunk coffee tables hold art books below it, and exposed ceiling beams tie the whole interior back to the Victorian shell it was cut from. The effect is deliberately eclectic, Manchester grit softened by an appetite for the theatrical.

"I really don’t understand the good reviews. This place is easily the worse hotel I’ve been to in my life. Small, noisy all night, uncomfortable bed, weak shower pressure, not even hot water… Keys to open the door 😂 literally some dungeon. God knows how you people got 4 stars. I’m not even a person to review, but honestly a shocking experience. Genuinely felt like I was sleeping in some medieval cubicle. Ah yes “Breakfast to your door”… a 1 egg omelette. Budget place. Only good thing was the staff. Two young kids were welcoming and polite."

"The perfect little boutique hotel in a great location. Clean, great amenities and good value for money. The team were very attentive and made the stay very special. Support smaller hotels, this one is a gem."

"Lovely small boutique hotel within easy walking distance of Manchester centre. Spotlessly clean and friendly staff. Very reasonably priced with lots of little extras. Would definitely stay again . Top tip - the entrance is on the left of the police museum ."

"The room was extremely small—much smaller than a typical hotel room. There was no storage whatsoever: no wardrobe, no dresser/drawers/shelves, no space in the bathroom for toiletries, and no fridge in the room. There wasn’t even enough floor space to properly open our suitcases. I wouldn’t recommend booking unless you’re travelling very light, as we could barely move around or pass each other without squeezing. Even accessing the toilet required awkwardly navigating around the bathroom door. The room also felt quite worn and in need of a thorough clean. I noticed marks on the walls, visible dust, and the throw on the bed appeared dirty, which added to the overall impression of poor upkeep. After checking in, I raised my concerns with staff about the size of the room and lack of storage. However, I was told there were no larger rooms available, and no alternative solution or compensation was offered. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, especially as I had booked it to celebrate my husband’s 30th birthday. It fell well below expectations and felt more like a budget hotel, despite the price. For the same cost, we could have stayed somewhere of a much higher standard."
