PB hotel design editorial

Raymond Blanc arrived in Great Milton in 1984 with a specific ambition: to place a two-Michelin-starred kitchen inside a house that felt entirely like a home. The 15th-century Cotswold manor he chose, built in honey-coloured limestone with steeply pitched terracotta roofs, twisted Tudor chimneys, and leaded mullion windows framed by climbing wisteria, gave Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons its essential character before a single room was dressed. The two-acre kitchen garden, which Blanc planted and has tended for four decades, remains the conceptual heart of the property — the building and grounds forming a single argument about how cooking and place belong together. The 32 rooms and suites across the manor house and garden cottages divide between two registers: older rooms furnished with sculpted half-tester beds in powder-blue damask toile, striped wallcoverings, and brass-footed armchairs drawn up to leaded bay windows; newer suites working in a warmer, more contemporary key — dark-stained oak floors, mirrored four-poster frames, crimson velvet sofas, and hand-painted botanical wallpaper in blush and ivory. The dining room's Gothic oriel window, its stone mullions traced with ivy outside and linen curtains inside, anchors the restaurant in the fabric of the original house. Throughout, the drawing rooms carry the atmosphere of a well-lived-in English country house: patterned sofas beside open fireplaces, framed prints, fresh flowers from the garden cutting beds.

"The attitude of staff to the imminent closure of Le Manoir emphasises the incredible family of staff the Raymond Blanc has assembled at this unique hotel. The food is just on a different planet in terms of quality, variety and taste. The rooms are comfortable and welcoming- and the staff are consistently attentive, thoughtful and accommodating. The closure for refurbishment of this hotel will leave an irreplaceable void in the hospitality market. Le Manoir is in a league of its own- thanks to Raymond Blanc, the team he has assembled and the standards he demands."

"The experience was fantastic from start to finish, the attentive staff, the way we were made to feel welcome as if we were friends rather than customers. The room was perfect with all the little touches that help make it such a wonderful experience."
