PB hotel design editorial

A Palladian manor house at the end of a one-mile beech-lined avenue, set within 500 acres of Wiltshire parkland just six miles from Bath — the building that became Lucknam Park Hotel & Spa was constructed around 1720 and extended in the early nineteenth century, its honey-coloured Bath stone facade carrying the characteristic proportions of the Georgian country house: symmetrical sash windows, a pedimented entrance portico, and chimney stacks rising from a hipped roofline. The approach alone, framed by mature beeches arching overhead, does more atmospheric work than most hotels manage with their entire interiors. Inside, the principal rooms maintain their Georgian bones — deep cornicing, plasterwork ceilings, tall shuttered windows that flood the dining room with parkland light — while the furnishings layer in a thoroughly traditional country house register: mahogany four-poster beds with barley-twist columns, swag-and-tail silk drapery, crystal chandeliers, and Regency-style occasional tables in the bedrooms; Chippendale-influenced dining chairs and gilt wall sconces in the restaurant. Outbuildings converted into courtyard rooms offer a different character altogether, with vaulted roof trusses, duck-egg painted walls, and mahogany sleigh beds beneath exposed beams. The spa addition, housed in a barrel-vaulted glass and timber structure, brings a quietly contemporary counterpoint — limestone pool surrounds, teak decking, and full-height glazing opening to the walled garden — without disturbing the Georgian composure of the main house.

"This review is for The Walled Garden bistro/restaurant We eat here several times a year with family and friends. We have had the odd disappointing experience before but nothing quite so dreadful as our most recent visit. We had lunch over the weekend with friends. We were telling them about how wonderful it is, the setting, food, service etc. We couldn’t have been more wrong. It took 20 minutes to be offered a drink after we were shown to our table. In fact we had to call out to a member of staff after everyone completely ignored us. It was not particularly busy and certainly nowhere near full with other diners. Our pre-lunch drinks came after about a further 15 minutes wait and the order was wrong. We waited another 20 minutes to order. When we ordered we were told 2 of the 3 special starters were not available, why weren’t we told this as we were given the menus! The waiter took our order and then came back twice to check what we had actually asked for. He had written it down so not sure why it needed checking. It just looked amateurish. When the food arrived two of our party had plates but two didn’t not. We had to call the waiter again to ask for plates. He literally sighed as he went to get them and came back with side plates. We had to then ask for proper dinner plates. It was almost farcical The food was very nice and the portions were a good size. All in all it was very disappointing and so far from what it should have been. For an establishment that charges top prices, the cost was £400 for four of us, it’s unacceptable It will be a long time before we go back and we will not be taking friends with us. With places like The Townhouse in Corsham opening soon and many other excellent restaurants in the surrounding areas The Walled Garden should not rest on its laurels."

"Wonderful stay, a last minute booking to celebrate my birthday. Never visited before but we will now be returning. A most elegant palladian property , maintained excellently, true grandeur but also managed to make it cosy and comfortable. A wide choice of rooms and ours truly reflected the grandeur of the building. All very well appointed. Most fabulous soft buttery bedding. We arrived very early for a 3 night break and received the most wonderful and warm welcome as we pulled up at the entrance by Silviu, Master of the House. The car was swiftly parked for us and we were surprised and pleased to be checked in early despite the property being fully booked for the weekend. The most amazing wonderful house cocktails made expertly - so different to a lot of places now where the cocktails are just a few sips and a large lump of ice. Excellent range of menus to suit all tastes & moods - but all of the highest standards and all served with pride. Walled Garden restaurant more contemporary than the main Palladian hotel building but still cosy & nicely done. Whilst close to Bath and Chippenham and a myriad of other local attractions it sits peacefully in its own huge estate grounds. Bicycles provided so you can explore the estate plus an equestrian centre for those so inclined. My personal favourite was the Spa. Very impressive! Lovely warm pool indoors/ out. Comfortable sun beds / stunning outdoor garden. And the best range of saunas & steam rooms I have ever experienced- try the Japanese Salt Steam Room ! Well appointed gym, lots of equipment including Pelaton equipment. Only used by a few - pleasant training area I have been embarrassingly gushing in my praise..No complaints at all, we will return and feel that the hotel provides excellent value for money for the exceptional service, most beautiful hotel & surroundings. My personal thanks to Silviu (Master of the House), Gareth on reception and David on the bar !"

"We arrived for a three night stay at this beautiful hotel to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday and were welcomed by friendly, professional staff who upgraded our room which was a lovely surprise. All the thoughtful added touches made our stay a very special one. The Spa was excellent, a high standard and all you can wish for to enjoy some relaxation and pampering. The food in The Walled Garden restaurant was very good, we ate there each night. The surrounding grounds are beautifully kept and lovely to walk around. Every part of the hotel was very clean and well maintained. We would highly recommend staying and will certainly return in the future."

"The best Spa Hotel I’ve been to. We were told £15million had been spent creating the Spa and Garden restaurant and you can see where the money has been spent. The pool area is lovely with plenty of sun beds, the outdoor pool is hot, around 35 degrees so using it was always comfortable even on a chilly evening. There are sun loungers outside which will be great on sunny days but we only used indoors. Which was warm and comfortable. The saunas and steam rooms were great and again very warm. Changing areas, towels, gowns and sliders all provided were excellent. The staff in the hotel generally wear all very good, really friendly and always smiling and engaging. The Spa staff were particularly helpful. If there was a negative - you couldn’t order any drinks within the pool area. A nice cocktail would have been a great addition. The Market Restaurant was great, very modern, but very comfortable. Again the staff were excellent. The food too was great, we had one evening meal and breakfast each morning. The breakfasts were superb, served at the table with plenty of choice. Our room was good, nice bed, pillows weee a bit hard, there was plenty of storage, all the amenities you would expect, tea, coffee, water etc. The room was cleaned and turned down each night, all very nicely put together. The grounds are beautiful, the main drive needs a bit of TLC, but it is a fantastic approach to the hotel entrance. The hotel itself was a little less impressive, there was table service but I think it needs a bar area where you can sit for a last drink. But overall a fantastic hotel and a fantastic experience. A perfect spa break. The city of Bath is a short drive or taxi from the hotel and is obviously worth a visit. We stayed 2 nights, I think one night might not be enough to enjoy everything. I also left my sunglasses in my room on checking out, I contacted the hotel, they were superb in locating them and posting them back into my home address another example of their excellent service and attention to detail. I would definitely recommend as a nice treat."

"A very good stay in this country house hotel which offers comfortable and well appointed accommodation for adults (and dogs). Probably children, as well, but we were not travelling with them"
