PB hotel design editorial

Built in the early eighteenth century from honey-coloured Yorkshire sandstone, the Grade II listed manor house at the heart of Grantley Hall carries the clean Baroque proportions of its era without apology — a pedimented central bow, ranks of sash windows, and a roofline punctuated by stone chimneys that reads with the same authority at dusk as it does in morning light. Set within 150 acres of North Yorkshire parkland between Ripon and the Dales, the house was transformed into a hotel following an extensive restoration completed in 2019, its formal parterre gardens redesigned with a contemporary rill and fountain that acknowledge the estate's geometry without mimicking its age. Inside, the interiors move between registers depending on the wing. The principal rooms of the original house — the dining room in particular — retain their elaborate plasterwork friezes, Corinthian pilasters, and brass chandelier fittings, furnished with scallop-backed velvet chairs and heavily draped silk curtains in the manner of a Colefax and Fowler country house commission. Guest rooms in the main house favour sage greens and warm stone tones, with shaped upholstered headboards and brass bedside fittings; those in the newer spa wing open into vaulted ceilings and barrel-arched atrium spaces whose limestone columns and groin-vaulted pool hall borrow the structural vocabulary of a Roman bath. Across its 47 rooms and suites, the property holds its formal bones and its contemporary ambitions in careful balance.

"We have visited Grantley Hall before for afternoon tea and it was excellent. But on this occasion there were a couple of things that could have been better. I simply point these out because Grantley Hall is a 5 star establishment. When we arrived we were shown into the lounge area whilst the tables were prepared in the room where afternoon tea is served. After a few minutes we were shown to our table. Unfortunately it was right next to what you could call the serving area. I did notice there were a couple of other tables for two free, farther into the room. On reflection I should have asked to be moved. We were given the tea menu and then waited. After about 40 minutes nothing had happened. No order for the tea etc. So we asked what the delay was and were told there was a problem in the kitchen. It would have been helpful if we had been told this, as everyone understands that problems such as this can arise. The afternoon tea was excellent and the staff are polite. I know these problems can arise and my comments may seem rather small, but at a cost of £180 you expect it to run smoothly and not be disturbed throughout your ‘ meal ‘ by staff and other guests constantly wandering past your table."

"My husband and I stayed at Grantley Hall for two nights arriving on the 16th March. We have friends who have visited many times and always enthusiastically recommended Grantley to us. From our very first interactions via email the tone was set that the visit was going to be a wonderful experience. Helpful and informative emails and a telephone call a few days before to confirm all our arrangements for dining and spa treatments were in place. Our arrival from the gatehouse onwards was warm, welcoming and efficient. It was like being on the receiving end of a huge hug. Guests can use the spa facilities from 1pm on the day of arrival so we headed off for an afternoon of blissful relaxation. The spa is a delight and unlike many other spa hotels now it doesn't encourage outside visitors or limit the time that guests can spend in there so the peace is preserved. The space is just magical. I had a lovely pedicure with a lovely young lady called Livvy. We eventually headed to our room guided by Georgi who was wonderful in explaining everyone and directing us to the amazing damson gin! The rooms are so comfortable and opulent and the bathroom was just incredible We dined in Fletchers and 88 and both experiences were delightful. The korean fried cauliflower is epic The magical ingredient about Grantley Hall is without doubt the people. Unlike many places there is no skimping on staff numbers so there is always someone there to greet you and check in to see if you need anything. I have never been anywhere with a service level so exceptional and we have been lucky enough to visit many wonderful hotels. On our journey home we agreed that we will never again go anywhere else for a short break like this and will endeavour to visit at least twice a year to get our Grantley fix. With thanks to Georgi, Tommy, Vince, Madi, Livvy, Amanie, Ricardo, Paul and everyone that we encountered during our stay. You are all truly a credit to Grantley Hall"

"We visited Grantley Hall to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary and I cannot express in words how magical it was. From the moment we turned though the gates to the moment we left. We were greeted by Isaac at the gate house, literally the most positive and energetic person, welcomed us like old friends. The gatehouse itself adored with twinkly fairy lights just looked so picture perfect. The drive itself looked like something from an old masters painting, running along side a river, with a bridge, framed against the pink sky, it was just beautiful. We parked and walked around to the hall its self, music plays outside to accompany you, it’s like being in Bridgerton. Once inside we were immediately greeted by friendly and attentive staff who took our name and lead us into the bar, which again did not disappoint. Somewhere in the middle of an old school English Manor House and The Great Gatsby… the Norton Bar is just stunning! We were lead to a little table by the window and ordered some cocktails, which were delicious… the feeling in there is relaxed, there’s an open fire which adds to the ambience. When it was time for our meal we were lead though to the restaurant, the staff knew it was a special day for us, and we were wish happy anniversary and given a lovely hand written card. Our table was situated by another fire, which made the whole experience feel somewhat homely. We had two waiters, who looked after us all night, the attention to detail was exquisite. They poured our water, remembered our names, who ordered what… I can’t praise them enough for the way they looked after us. The food it’s self was incredible, one of the best meals I’ve eaten… I highly recommend the Rhubarb Sphere… at the meal we were presented with a little platter of sweets which said Happy 10th Anniversary, which I just think is so lovely… honestly we didn’t want to leave, and will 100% be going back… it was literally the best night, the best staff, the most lovely atmosphere."

"The best of the best service in such an amazing place, everything was taken care of. Valet parking top class, met by name and greeted with details of your stay. Every member of staff knows who you are, but never over-pestered. What a place it is, they do a great job looking after you. All of the staff were so impressive, nothing was too much trouble, each one happy to spend time with you and have a chat making you feel so at home and welcome. They clearly have the best team."

"Double celebratory treat with Afternoon tea in the Drawing room for our Wedding Anniversary and my wife’s birthday. Superbly looked after by your team and special mention to Eduardo for going the extra mile and giving us a personal tour of the Hotel and its facilities. I have had many a sausage roll in my life but the sausage roll served during tea was exemplary and far and away the best I have ever eaten! The service was a leisurely pace with bottomless Earl Grey and the most beautiful sweet treats washed down with a glass of bubbly! Hoping to stay overnight next Anniversary…I’m in awe Valeria! Thankyou and your dedicated team for such a memorable, decadent and romantic afternoon. Charles & Zharina"
