PB hotel design editorial

Built in the early eighteenth century from honey-coloured Yorkshire sandstone, the Grade II listed manor house at the heart of Grantley Hall carries the clean Baroque proportions of its era without apology — a pedimented central bow, ranks of sash windows, and a roofline punctuated by stone chimneys that reads with the same authority at dusk as it does in morning light. Set within 150 acres of North Yorkshire parkland between Ripon and the Dales, the house was transformed into a hotel following an extensive restoration completed in 2019, its formal parterre gardens redesigned with a contemporary rill and fountain that acknowledge the estate's geometry without mimicking its age. Inside, the interiors move between registers depending on the wing. The principal rooms of the original house — the dining room in particular — retain their elaborate plasterwork friezes, Corinthian pilasters, and brass chandelier fittings, furnished with scallop-backed velvet chairs and heavily draped silk curtains in the manner of a Colefax and Fowler country house commission. Guest rooms in the main house favour sage greens and warm stone tones, with shaped upholstered headboards and brass bedside fittings; those in the newer spa wing open into vaulted ceilings and barrel-arched atrium spaces whose limestone columns and groin-vaulted pool hall borrow the structural vocabulary of a Roman bath. Across its 47 rooms and suites, the property holds its formal bones and its contemporary ambitions in careful balance.
