PB hotel design editorial

Built in the early eighteenth century from honey-coloured Yorkshire sandstone, the Grade II listed manor house at the heart of Grantley Hall carries the clean Baroque proportions of its era without apology — a pedimented central bow, ranks of sash windows, and a roofline punctuated by stone chimneys that reads with the same authority at dusk as it does in morning light. Set within 150 acres of North Yorkshire parkland between Ripon and the Dales, the house was transformed into a hotel following an extensive restoration completed in 2019, its formal parterre gardens redesigned with a contemporary rill and fountain that acknowledge the estate's geometry without mimicking its age. Inside, the interiors move between registers depending on the wing. The principal rooms of the original house — the dining room in particular — retain their elaborate plasterwork friezes, Corinthian pilasters, and brass chandelier fittings, furnished with scallop-backed velvet chairs and heavily draped silk curtains in the manner of a Colefax and Fowler country house commission. Guest rooms in the main house favour sage greens and warm stone tones, with shaped upholstered headboards and brass bedside fittings; those in the newer spa wing open into vaulted ceilings and barrel-arched atrium spaces whose limestone columns and groin-vaulted pool hall borrow the structural vocabulary of a Roman bath. Across its 47 rooms and suites, the property holds its formal bones and its contemporary ambitions in careful balance.

"We have just returned from the wonderful Grantley Hall. This hotel is truly wonderful, staff are welcoming and friendly, rooms and surroundings are spotless and the service is next level. Special mention to Vince and the breakfast team who install an air of calm in the morning. Housekeeping who work behind the scenes to maintain the standards of the hotel also deserve a mention."

"We went to Grantley Hall for dinner in Fletchers Restaurant. It was absolute perfection from the moment we drove through the gate - with valet parking, attentive and knowledgeable service, beautiful ambience and delicious food and drink. It’s wonderful that we have somewhere of this sublime quality in North Yorkshire."

"We had a fantastic overnight stay at Grantley last week. My mother and I went to celebrate my birthday, having been to the spa many times we decided to stay overnight and I’m so glad we did. We were greeted at the gate by lovely Issac, he is the perfect person to welcome guests, friendly, enthusiastic and joyful. I even got a rendition of Happy birthday from him with his bell. From that moment onwards the trip just got more amazing as the day went on, the staff are truly out of this world, every single member is amazing. Each person embodies the friendly Yorkshire nature you’d expect up north and they make you feel like you’re at a home away from home. When we arrived we were slightly early so weren’t able to check in straight away, the team were fantastic and ensured us they’d get our bags up to our room while we relaxed in the spa. After a welcome drink we headed to the wonderful spa. The spa is out of this world, we love coming back, we’ve been to countless spas in the country and none compare to Grantley Hall. We’re slowly working our way through different treatments at the spa and this time my mother had the Quiro massage and I had a sports massage, both were amazing. I have to mention both Lexia and Amanie who did our treatments, so knowledgeable and friendly. Absolutely brilliant! When we went up to the room it had been decorated with balloons and a cake for my birthday which was a lovely touch! The cake was absolutely delicious! The rooms are very luxurious and have everything you could possibly need, the little touches of slippers, rain coats and an umbrella just gives that extra magic, the team have really thought of it all. We had a slight issue in our room with our bath and the team were fantastic in trying to find a solution, matinance came to the room straight away and then Kevin followed up and passed the issue over to Ricardo. We have to give a special mention to Ricardo, he did everything he could to help us, he went above and beyond and his attitude to guest feedback was brilliant. We cannot wait to return to the hotel in a few months, Ricardo has been so generous to help us arrange a return trip in June. We decided to eat at The Grantley Arms for our evening meal and I’m so glad we did. The food was delicious, the staff fantastic and the atmosphere of the pub was very comforting. I do have to finally mention Andrew who drove us to and from the Grantley Arms, the most lovely Yorkshire man. Being from Yorkshire ourselves we clicked with him straight away, he dropped us off and then offered to come back and pick us up a few hours later. Such a lovely gentleman! A quick stop to the gift shop on the way out, I didn’t catch the ladies name in there but she was lovely and I met Minnie the famous cat! Can’t wait to come back in June, Grantley Hall is truly the best in the country!"

"We had a one night stay at this outstanding hotel. All the staff are exceptional and friendly - from the gatehouse, car park (included charging my electric car), reception, bar and staff showing us to our room. The grounds are beautiful and very well maintained. We ate at Restaurant Eighty Eight and had the delicious 8 course tasting menu. Again, all the staff there were exceptional. The highlight of the stay though had to be receiving a complimentary upgrade to the two floor Royal Suite. An incredible experience!"
