PB hotel design editorial

Carved into Tallinn's Old Town from a building that once served as Estonia's central telegraph and telephone exchange — the inscription Telegraaf Post Telefon, 12. Nov. 1918 still legible above the original timber entrance doors — Hotel Telegraaf Autograph Collection carries a civic weight that most new-build hotels spend fortunes trying to simulate. The neoclassical limestone facade, with its rusticated base and rhythmic window grid, dates to the early twentieth century and faces directly onto Vene Street, a short walk from the medieval Town Hall Square. The conversion preserved the architectural shell with evident care, the original cornicing and door surrounds intact throughout the public spaces and guestrooms. Inside, the interiors layer a confident eclecticism over the building's formal bones: herringbone oak parquet, ebonised four-poster beds, tufted red velvet armchairs, and mercury-glass table lamps give the 82 rooms a collected, slightly theatrical quality that suits the building's history without tipping into pastiche. The restaurant, housed beneath a vaulted steel-and-glass conservatory roof, pairs crimson-stained hardwood floors and gilt-framed antique panels on charcoal walls with a dramatic living plant wall closing the far end. Perhaps the most unexpectedly resolved space is the spa pool, where dark marble cladding, terracotta brick pavers, and a second arched glazed roof create an atmosphere that draws as much from a Central European bathhouse as from contemporary wellness design.

Hotel Telegraaf, Autograph Collection Reviews

"Review The Telegraaf Hotel Unfortunately, the only good things about this hotel are the location and the size of the rooms (we stayed in a Junior Suite). What usually separates a good hotel from a bad one is courtesy, kindness, warmth, and service — and sadly, this hotel lacks all four. Even before arriving, dealing with the concierge was a frustrating experience. We specifically requested non-Michelin restaurants, yet those were the first recommendations sent to us. From the very first email, we clearly stated we were a family of six, but reservations were repeatedly made for two people. It genuinely felt as though nobody was actually reading our requests. Upon arrival, nobody explained what was included in our rate (for example, breakfast), and no one escorted us to the room — something that is standard even in many hotels below five-star level. We had to figure everything out ourselves, and throughout our stay, used glasses and other items in the room were never properly cleared or cleaned. Our first night perfectly summarized the level of service. We asked for help finding a restaurant for dinner, and the experience became almost absurd. They kept insisting on a restaurant where we had already personally checked availability and been told the only available table was at 8:30 pm — too late for us. We explained this clearly multiple times. Then they recommended another restaurant, but when we asked them to confirm availability, they informed us the restaurant was actually closed. At that point, it honestly started feeling like a joke. Later, another person called on behalf of his “colleague” (I assume referring to the concierge) to say a table was waiting for us at the original restaurant. When I asked what time the reservation was for, he simply answered, “at the time my colleague told you,” which made it obvious he had no idea about the situation or what had previously been discussed. Once again, nobody had listened. When we finally asked if they could simply recommend somewhere else, the response was unbelievable: he abruptly said he would not do anything further and hung up the phone. We eventually ate at the hotel bar, where we were thankfully attended by one genuinely kind and pleasant staff member. The turndown service they advertise does not really exist. We requested it and were told the staff member responsible had already gone home. Breakfast was another disappointing experience. We waited 40–45 minutes for scrambled eggs while one waiter calmly drank his coffee completely unbothered, despite us asking three times. Dirty plates remained uncleared on the tables, and service overall was painfully slow. There was one young lady who was genuinely lovely and attentive, but unfortunately she seemed to be the exception rather than the rule. Tomorrow we will skip breakfast at the hotel altogether and go to a nearby café instead. They continue encouraging guests to dine at the hotel restaurant, but after experiencing the breakfast service, we have absolutely no interest in doing so. The rooms themselves are acceptable, although the beds are extremely soft (which I understand is a matter of personal preference). However, the duvet is thin and poor quality, and the bed linens feel average at best. Tallinn has many other hotel options. If you are looking for a place with warmth, smiles, courtesy, kindness, and genuine service, unfortunately this is not the right hotel."

"SPA very nice. Didn't stay in hotel. Stayed in My City Hotel (3 mins walk away) will definitely come back, maybe as guest. Room package was more expensive hence why we stayed elsewhere."

"We loved staying at Telegraaf. Quiet, small, right next to the Town Hall Square and very personable. Great service, very attentive staff, prompt and efficient housekeeping and a great restaurant, Tchaikovsky, where we were lucky to have our Christmas Eve dinner. We felt so at home at this hotel and everyone was so helpful We used the spa a lot that was never too busy. The three of us had massages and they were excellent. I would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again and would happily recommend it to others. And BTW, Tallinn is underestimated as a travel destination. Out of three countries that we visited on the trip: France, Finland and Estonia (Tallinn) we all agreed that Tallinn was an absolute highlight. Enchanting Old Town, great restaurants (many are Michelin-starred) and great souvenirs to take home (many of which are natural, organic products). Go and you won't be disappointed."
