PB hotel design editorial

Malolo Island, a teardrop of land in Fiji's Mamanuca archipelago, presents an almost impossible design brief: how do you build a resort that feels genuinely rooted in place when the place itself is this extravagantly beautiful? Six Senses Fiji, which opened in 2016, answers by refusing to compete with the landscape. Spread across a low peninsula where white sand beaches curve into lagoon on both sides, the property's 24 villas and residences are arranged in a loose constellation of dark-roofed bures — traditional Fijian structures reinterpreted through the Six Senses lens of grounded, material-led design. From above, the complex barely registers against the coconut palms and grass, the massing deliberately low and dispersed to avoid any suggestion of resort monumentality. Inside, the villas lean into local craft with genuine conviction. Woven pandanus panels line the walls, exposed hardwood beams and thatched ceilings carry the structural honesty of vernacular building, and louvered timber folding doors dissolve the boundary between bedroom and beach deck entirely. The furniture draws on a regional palette — turned wood side tables, rattan pendants, canopy beds dressed in white linen — grounded by dark ironwood floors throughout. The restaurant takes the same approach outdoors: a steel-framed, open-sided pavilion under deep thatched eaves, teak dining chairs with rope detailing arranged toward a horizon that turns tangerine at dusk. The infinity pool, flanked by coconut palms reflected perfectly in still water, sits at the edge of the lagoon with the quiet confidence of something that knows it doesn't need to try harder than that.

"We stayed at Six Senses Fiji in the 6 bedroom residence with our family of 11 (grandparents, parents, grandkids, aunt and uncle) and it was absolutely outstanding! Cannot fault the accomodation, it was so good it looked fake. The house had so much space and everything you needed, plus spectacular views of the island. The house maid Casa was so lovely and was always cleaning the house and doing our washing, it was amazing service. We were allocated a GEM for our stay (Guest Experience Manager) Marika, who was the nicest person ever. We all loved him! if you get him as your GEM you are in good hands! He was so helpful with all of our needs and requests. If you plan to go to Six Senses definitely make the most of your GEM as they are there to help you whenever you need them. Marika also organised a snorkeling trip for us which was absolutely incredible, highly recommend doing this as an activity. We took young kids on the snorkeling trip too and they loved the experience too. The resort is perfect for all ages, it’s a very family friendly place. Kids club is fab, all the Nannie’s are beautiful. So many activities for the kids to do. There are plenty of dining options with great food! However don’t go in with high expectations for food and remember everyone here is on Fiji time here so don’t expect a fine dining experience. All the seafood options were amazing and definitely try the chef specials each night. You can expect incredibly friendly staff in all areas who will try to cater to all of your needs. Breakfast is really good so make the most of that. We loved the outdoor pizza restaurant under the stars whilst watching a movie. Mosquitoes are everywhere so pack spray and remember to reapply all the time. Really cannot fault this resort and would love to go back one day. Thank you for looking after us Six Senses!!!"

"Amazing destination for kids. The kids club and programme is without a doubt one of the best I’ve seen (and we’ve seen a few!). They really go above and beyond for the kids which in turn makes a lovely relaxing holiday for the parents. Great facilities including a well equipped gym. Evi was our nanny and she was absolutely incredible, my kids won’t warm easily to strangers but within 24 hours they were asking when they could see her next ! If you go to six senses definitely request Evi! Big thanks to Wati as well who went above and beyond for us the whole stay."

"My experience at six senses Fiji surfing with Dan , Api and Fazzy was unlike anywhere in the world a 15 min boat ride to 7 of the most epic breaks . It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner ,intermediate or expert they make sure you feel safe and when they take you to a break their knowledge of everything about that break is bar none the best in Fiji. The boards they provide are another amazing perk at the six senses all the boards are provided so no need to travel with a board and their recent additions are world class in their design and selection . Curated with a well known pro surfer just relax show up and go get wet. The experience will leave you wanting more and more . Vinaka VakaLevu six senses for the best waves in fiji . No goodbyes here only till we meet again. Bula!"
