PB hotel design editorial

Malolo Island, a teardrop of land in Fiji's Mamanuca archipelago, presents an almost impossible design brief: how do you build a resort that feels genuinely rooted in place when the place itself is this extravagantly beautiful? Six Senses Fiji, which opened in 2016, answers by refusing to compete with the landscape. Spread across a low peninsula where white sand beaches curve into lagoon on both sides, the property's 24 villas and residences are arranged in a loose constellation of dark-roofed bures — traditional Fijian structures reinterpreted through the Six Senses lens of grounded, material-led design. From above, the complex barely registers against the coconut palms and grass, the massing deliberately low and dispersed to avoid any suggestion of resort monumentality. Inside, the villas lean into local craft with genuine conviction. Woven pandanus panels line the walls, exposed hardwood beams and thatched ceilings carry the structural honesty of vernacular building, and louvered timber folding doors dissolve the boundary between bedroom and beach deck entirely. The furniture draws on a regional palette — turned wood side tables, rattan pendants, canopy beds dressed in white linen — grounded by dark ironwood floors throughout. The restaurant takes the same approach outdoors: a steel-framed, open-sided pavilion under deep thatched eaves, teak dining chairs with rope detailing arranged toward a horizon that turns tangerine at dusk. The infinity pool, flanked by coconut palms reflected perfectly in still water, sits at the edge of the lagoon with the quiet confidence of something that knows it doesn't need to try harder than that.

"First time to Fiji for our family of 5 - we fell in love with Six Senses. All the staff were amazing, special mention to Tex (our Guest Experience Manager), Sieni and Ben (who both doted on my 3 children). We like to explore when we travel and try different resorts and don't usually go back to the same place twice, but Six Senses Fiji is so incredible we want to go back. During our 3 night stay we enjoyed the traditional Fijian cuisine, went to Seventh Heaven and got a couple massage whilst my kids enjoyed tie dying shirts and baking cookies at kids club. Thank you for having us, we miss you already."

"We stayed at Six Senses Fiji for 5 nights and honestly had a really great time. From the minute we arrived, the welcome felt so warm and genuine. It was lovely to be greeted by the team, including GM Mark, and it set the tone for the whole stay. Big thank you to our GEM Marika. He looked after us so well the whole trip, from showing us to the villa on day one to sending us off when we left. He was always quick to help, always followed up, and nothing ever felt too hard. Also, his laugh is the kind that makes everyone else happy too. He just brought a lot of positive energy and really made our stay better. One thing that really stood out was how friendly everyone was. Staff remembered our names, which was such a nice touch. Our daughter has a few food allergies, and every meal the staff and chefs were so careful with her food. They made sure it was prepared separately to avoid cross contamination, and that gave us a lot of peace of mind. She actually ate more on this trip than she normally does, which says a lot. Food was a real highlight for us. We loved the main restaurant, and the first night spicy Pai Thai from the special menu was so good. We also really enjoyed Mexican night, Pizza night, and Fijian night. Special thanks to Issac and the team for the kava experience too. Every meal felt consistently good, which is not always easy at a resort. Thank you to Seini, Miri, Ben, Toga, Emi, Laila, Nate, Kini, Kira, Ace and everyone else who looked after us! The private beach dinner was another standout. Huge thanks to Mitchell and the team for putting together such an amazing seafood dinner. We also really enjoyed chatting with Seini, who shared lots of fun Fijian culture and trivia with us. That made the night even more memorable. Her wine recommendation was also spot on. Thank you as well to Vicki and Dr. Martin for the yoga and wellness sessions. My wife loved them and kept going morning and afternoon whenever she could. Also a big thank you to Shivani and Taru for the spa treatment for my wife. Our daughter also had her first ever kids spa on 15 April and absolutely loved it. Sorry we did not catch the name of the staff member who looked after her, but thank you as well. Thank you to Dr. Aju for the Ayurvedic consultation for our family and the personalised suggestions. Our daughter also joined kids activities during the stay, and Evi and Koto were wonderful with her. They always made sure she was included and having fun. Also thank you to Sera for housekeeping. We left the villa messy every day and always came back to it looking spotless again. Sorry if we missed anyone’s name, but thank you to the whole team at Six Senses Fiji. You made this trip really special for our family and we would happily come back."

"Six Senses is by far the best resort experience I’ve ever had. It’s just a 45-minute boat ride from the main island, making it extremely convenient. The island is blanketed in lush tropical rainforest and surrounded by crystal-clear ocean waters, where you can simply walk right in for swimming and snorkeling. The hotel offers a diverse daily schedule of activities tailored for adults, children, and families alike. The staff are incredibly warm and welcoming, with the joyful Fijian greeting bula filling every day. Last but certainly not least, the food on the island is absolutely delicious — every meal is exceptional."

"Best family vacation ever. The beach is beautiful, the six senses resort is incredible, the food - particularly breakfast is delicious - but it’s the people that make this place special and set it above anywhere I have stayed. The staff is top tier, and you truly feel part of a family during your stay. Cannot speak highly enough of this paradise. We will be back!"

"We just returned from this trip and I am ready to go back again! The service was impeccable and surpassed in hospitality over any other luxury resort I have experienced. The atmosphere was serene and felt secluded and private. The staff went above and beyond to make our stay magical. A huge thank you to Chef Manish for some of the most delicious meals that felt like home, to Seini, Kini and Nate for taking such good care of us at every meal and by the pool, to Ajju and Tia for a sublime wellness experience and to Vicki and Dr. Martin for bringing mindfulness and self care back into our lives - something I hope to keep going in my daily life. Every journey transforms you in some way, but this place is truly special - thanks to Mark and his team for an outstanding experience."
