PB hotel design editorial

Malolo Island, a teardrop of land in Fiji's Mamanuca archipelago, presents an almost impossible design brief: how do you build a resort that feels genuinely rooted in place when the place itself is this extravagantly beautiful? Six Senses Fiji, which opened in 2016, answers by refusing to compete with the landscape. Spread across a low peninsula where white sand beaches curve into lagoon on both sides, the property's 24 villas and residences are arranged in a loose constellation of dark-roofed bures — traditional Fijian structures reinterpreted through the Six Senses lens of grounded, material-led design. From above, the complex barely registers against the coconut palms and grass, the massing deliberately low and dispersed to avoid any suggestion of resort monumentality. Inside, the villas lean into local craft with genuine conviction. Woven pandanus panels line the walls, exposed hardwood beams and thatched ceilings carry the structural honesty of vernacular building, and louvered timber folding doors dissolve the boundary between bedroom and beach deck entirely. The furniture draws on a regional palette — turned wood side tables, rattan pendants, canopy beds dressed in white linen — grounded by dark ironwood floors throughout. The restaurant takes the same approach outdoors: a steel-framed, open-sided pavilion under deep thatched eaves, teak dining chairs with rope detailing arranged toward a horizon that turns tangerine at dusk. The infinity pool, flanked by coconut palms reflected perfectly in still water, sits at the edge of the lagoon with the quiet confidence of something that knows it doesn't need to try harder than that.

"Tex (our GEM) and the whole team provided us with a warm and very friendly welcome, which made our stay unforgettable from the moment we landed on the island. We stayed at a residence with our five children, which offered ample space, plenty of privacy, and room for everyone—including our three teenagers and two younger ones. I highly recommend the water sports activities, including fishing, but especially e-foiling—we loved it! For the perfect finish, we had an amazing dinner on the beach with a fantastic chef and 5-star superior service."

"Staying at Six Senses hotel was truly wonderful. All aspects of hospitality completely surpassed the standards of a high quality resort such as this. Our GEM Marika was wonderful, as well as the waiters Ema, Ben, Sully, and Lela. The diving instructors that came with us also did an exceptional job. Jon, Joseph and Manasa demonstrated great professionalism while making us have lots of fun. In summary, the experience at Six Senses Fiji was wonderful and every single staff member made us feel like we were at home."

"Our stay at Six Senses Fiji was, quite simply, the best holiday of our lives. From the moment we arrived until the moment we reluctantly left, everything was exceptional. Six Senses has created something truly extraordinary - a place that feels luxurious, authentic, warm and completely effortless all at once. It is, quite honestly, faultless. What makes Six Senses so special, though, is not just the incredible setting, villas, food or gardens - it is the people. Every member of the team we encountered was genuinely exceptional, and their warmth and care made our stay unforgettable. A very special thank you to our GEM, Joe, who was absolutely incredible. Joe went above and beyond in every possible way and somehow seemed to anticipate what we needed before we even knew we needed it. He made us feel incredibly well looked after while also giving us the freedom to simply relax and enjoy every moment. He is a true asset to Six Senses and someone we will remember for a very long time. We also want to give a huge thank you to Suli, Josh, Sala, Emi, Ben the bartender, Ben from the store, Jonathan, Miri and Laila. Every interaction was filled with genuine kindness, warmth and professionalism. And to everyone else whose names we may have missed - thank you. You all played a part in making this such a remarkable experience. One of the highlights was the kava ceremony in our villa with Joe and Si. It was such a special and authentic experience, beautifully delivered, and something we will treasure as a memory of our time in Fiji. The resort itself is stunning. Our villa was outstanding - beautifully designed, incredibly comfortable and perfectly integrated into the natural surroundings. The organic gardens, chicken coop and commitment to sustainability were wonderful to see and added so much character and authenticity to the experience. There is something incredibly special about being surrounded by such care for the environment while still enjoying such extraordinary luxury. And then there is the food. Without question, this was some of the best food we have ever experienced. Every meal was beautifully prepared, fresh, thoughtful and full of flavour. A huge thank you to all of the chefs and everyone behind the scenes who made every meal such a highlight of our day. Six Senses Fiji isn't simply a beautiful resort. It is an experience where every detail has been considered, every person genuinely cares, and every moment feels special. We arrived expecting an incredible holiday and left having experienced something far beyond that. We genuinely did not want to leave. Thank you to the entire Six Senses Fiji team for giving us the best holiday of our lives. We will never forget it, and we cannot wait to return. With love, Megan, Chris & Mila Villa 12 ❤️"

"Our stay at Six Senses Fiji was made truly magical by its staff. Suli, Josh, David, Ma, lella, Eleanor, Pana, and Emi — thank you for the warmth, kindness, and genuine care you showed us every single day. You didn't just do your jobs, you made us feel like family, and that's what we'll remember most. Huge thanks also to the rest of the wonderful team behind the scenes. The property is beautiful, but it's the people who make Six Senses Fiji truly special. Vinaka vaka levu! 🌺"
