PB hotel design editorial

Malolo Island, a teardrop of land in Fiji's Mamanuca archipelago, presents an almost impossible design brief: how do you build a resort that feels genuinely rooted in place when the place itself is this extravagantly beautiful? Six Senses Fiji, which opened in 2016, answers by refusing to compete with the landscape. Spread across a low peninsula where white sand beaches curve into lagoon on both sides, the property's 24 villas and residences are arranged in a loose constellation of dark-roofed bures — traditional Fijian structures reinterpreted through the Six Senses lens of grounded, material-led design. From above, the complex barely registers against the coconut palms and grass, the massing deliberately low and dispersed to avoid any suggestion of resort monumentality. Inside, the villas lean into local craft with genuine conviction. Woven pandanus panels line the walls, exposed hardwood beams and thatched ceilings carry the structural honesty of vernacular building, and louvered timber folding doors dissolve the boundary between bedroom and beach deck entirely. The furniture draws on a regional palette — turned wood side tables, rattan pendants, canopy beds dressed in white linen — grounded by dark ironwood floors throughout. The restaurant takes the same approach outdoors: a steel-framed, open-sided pavilion under deep thatched eaves, teak dining chairs with rope detailing arranged toward a horizon that turns tangerine at dusk. The infinity pool, flanked by coconut palms reflected perfectly in still water, sits at the edge of the lagoon with the quiet confidence of something that knows it doesn't need to try harder than that.

"We stayed at Six Senses Fiji in December with our family and had an absolutely fantastic time. It’s one of those places that manages to feel both luxurious and relaxed at the same time, which made it very easy to settle in and enjoy every moment. The staff were wonderful from the moment we arrived. Everyone was genuinely friendly and welcoming, and the service always felt natural rather than forced. By the second day many of the team knew our names and were checking in to make sure everything was going well. A special mention has to go to our Guest Experience Manager, Lote, who was amazing throughout our stay. She checked in with us regularly, helped organise a few things for us and made sure everything ran smoothly. Her care and attention to detail really stood out and made our stay feel extra special. Our villa was beautiful and very private, with plenty of space for us all. Waking up to the ocean each morning and having the outdoor space to relax made it extra amazing. Our daughter absolutely loved the kids club. One of her favourite things was watching movies on the beach in the evening with the other kids — such a simple idea but something she still talks about. It gave her something special to do while we were able to relax for a bit as well. Snorkelling around the reefs near the resort was another highlight. The water was super clear and there was plenty of underwater life to see just a short swim from the beach. The food across the resort was excellent and we enjoyed trying the different dining options during our stay. Everything was fresh and well thought out without being overly complicated. It was amazing to see a lot of Tasmanian produce on the menu which is where we are from. What really stood out overall was the atmosphere of the place. It’s peaceful, beautifully designed and very connected to the environment. We left wishing we had booked a longer stay, which is always a good sign. Would absolutely recommend Six Senses Fiji to anyone looking for a special holiday, especially if travelling with kids."

"My wife, son, and I stayed at Six Senses Fiji in March 2026 and had an absolutely wonderful time, we would highly recommend it to anyone without hesitation. We stayed in one of the villas, and our host Lote was exceptional. She was accommodating, attentive, and consistently went above and beyond throughout our stay. Our son was in the care of Sera, our nanny for the trip, who was phenomenal. We could not have felt more confident in her care and attention to his wellbeing. What made the experience even more special was how the entire resort embraced our 15 month old. Every single staff member wanted to say hello, hold him, and make sure he was happy and having the best time. He was genuinely treated like a VIP from the moment we arrived, it was incredibly touching and made the trip all the more memorable for our family. The restaurant team was fantastic. Emi, Sofia, Akisi, and Layla provided outstanding service every time we dined. They were warm, attentive, and went above and beyond anything we have experienced elsewhere. Api and Joey at the bar were brilliant, fun, welcoming, and kept us perfectly in holiday mode throughout the stay. API made sure we were taken care off every day and would make us different cocktails every night. The food deserves a special mention. Head Chef Winston and the entire kitchen team were outstanding. We consider ourselves serious food lovers and the restaurant genuinely felt like it could hold its own against any fine dining experience. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were all incredible, fresh fish caught daily, creative, and beautifully executed. Housekeeping was equally impressive. Every time we returned to the villa it had been immaculately refreshed. Anna’s attention to detail was noticeable and appreciated. Overall this was an unforgettable experience. The staff, the food, the activities, and the warmth of everyone at the resort were all world class. We look forward to coming back."

"I am not someone who usually writes reviews, but Six Senses Fiji absolutely deserves one. Our stay here was honestly one of the most special travel experiences we have ever had. Leaving the resort brought tears to my eyes. We have stayed at several resorts in Fiji before, but this does not even compare. From the moment you arrive, you are welcomed with the warmest smiles and genuine kindness from every single person. When they say “welcome home,” you truly feel it. By the end of the stay it honestly felt like we were leaving family. The resort itself is breathtaking. The views are incredible and the photos online genuinely do not do it justice. Everywhere you look is beautiful, peaceful and thoughtfully designed. The food was also exceptional. There are multiple dining options and each evening there is a themed dinner experience with live music, set outdoors under the stars. They even use herbs from their own garden. I am quite a picky eater and the team could not have been more accommodating. They encouraged us to personalise dishes, make changes to the menu, and even prepare things that weren’t listed. Nothing ever felt like too much trouble. A very special thank you to our GEM Toni, who helped my partner organise the most wonderful birthday while we were there. It was such a thoughtful and memorable day and we will never forget it. The staff truly make this place unforgettable. Api at the bar created personalised cocktails for us that were absolutely amazing, constantly checking in for feedback and tweaking them to make them perfect. Isaac, Sav and Tawake performing live music in the evenings was one of the highlights of our stay. It was so special seeing them around the resort during the day and then hearing them perform at night. Emi in the restaurant immediately makes you feel like part of his family with his incredible warmth and willingness to help with anything. Mark, the GM, was always around chatting with guests, remembering everyone’s names, where they had travelled from, and even remembered exactly which day my birthday was on! Komal and the front desk team helped arrange things for us that I didn’t even think would be possible, and made it feel effortless. No request ever felt too big. What truly sets Six Senses apart is the people. Fijians are known for their warmth and friendliness, but the team here are some of the most genuine, kind-hearted people we have ever met. Being sung and hugged goodbye when we left was incredibly emotional. Yes, it is an expensive place to stay, and I hesitated before booking. But after experiencing it, it is worth every single cent. The service, the people, the food, the atmosphere — everything is world class. If you are unsure about the price, I can honestly say you will not regret it. After staying here, I would return to Six Senses Fiji every time we visit Fiji. Nothing else compares. To everyone at Six Senses Fiji, thank you for such an unforgettable stay. You will always have a place in our hearts."

"It was magical from the time we arrived until we left . Our GEM, Lote, Looked after us as her family, and all the team were so Fijian and so welcoming. The GEM’s are well named , Guest Experience Manager, and that perfectly describes Lote’s role. We had a lovely private Villa with pool, and got more exercise than we had managed in ages. The food was just right for us , enough variety and much of it local and thus fresh. Cluckingham Palace was a hit , collected our eggs then had them cooked to order. The fresh grilled snapper was the best fish I have had in a long time. Getting there on the speedboat was fun and returning to Nadi on the helicopter was a great way to leave."
