PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Pohjoisesplanadi and Kluuvikatu, where Helsinki's grandest boulevard meets the heart of the city's commercial district, a five-storey Renaissance Revival palace has anchored Finnish social life since 1887. Designed by architect Theodor Höijer, the building's terracotta-toned facade — ornate pilasters, carved corbels, rusticated base, and a chamfered corner tower — established a register of civic confidence that the city was still finding its footing to express. Hotel Kamp, as it was originally named and again today, closed in 1965 after decades of decline and was meticulously restored and reopened in 1999, the interiors conceived to recover the spirit of the original grand café society that had made it a gathering place for figures including Sibelius, Gallén-Kallela, and Mannerheim. The restoration's approach is visible throughout: Corinthian columns with gilded capitals carry coffered ceilings in the restaurant, herringbone parquet laid underfoot, crystal chandeliers suspended above the bar with its dark mahogany counter and Empire-style marble-topped tables. Guestrooms layer deep-toned panelling with silk-draped four-poster and sleigh beds, the palette moving between dusty lavender and charcoal, with floral-patterned carpets that echo Finnish textile traditions through a decidedly European aristocratic filter. Across its 179 rooms and suites, the property holds its historical identity without freezing it — a building that has absorbed more than a century of Finnish history and carries the weight of that accumulation in every gilded capital and velvet cushion.

"From the moment you step through the doors of Hotel Kamp, you feel like you're in their perfectly curated world. My husband and I stayed here over the winter period, and going from the snow-filled streets outside to the grand, heritage interior made the Christmas-feeling even cosier. The newly renovated Bar was an experience we would recommend to everyone. Each cocktail has its own story and one that speaks back to the history of the hotel. I celebrated a birthday during our stay, and with no requests from my husband or I, they offered a special in-house celebration. It may not seem like a lot but when you get to the level of service that Hotel Kamp operates in, its the small details that have the lasting impacts. In my opinion. The interior, as you would expect, is incredible and every corner designed and maintained perfectly. The dining room for their buffet breakfast felt like you were in a private home (...a very large private home!). The concierge knew the local areas and information/events ect. to the T. And not just generically to anyone who asked, but specifically to each guest's age, interests, and desired experiences."

"The Hotel Kamp in Helsinki Our trip to Finland started in Helsinki, with a stay of two nights in the Hotel Kamp. Situated in the Esplanade, the hotel is especially useful because of its prime and tempting location. I use the word tempting advised because it is smack, dab, bang in the middle of a high end shopping area. This was evident even as we approached the hotel on our way from the airport. Check in was smooth and the cheerfulness of the Finns was evident even as we were checked in. By the time we had completed our formalities, our bags had already been transported to the room. The hotel boasts of a long and storied history and the lobby and architecture reflected the antiquity of the Hotel. However, the room and the amenities in the bathroom were quite modern. The room was very spacious and the bathroom spic and span and brightly lit. The amenities however, covered just the basic necessities. Our room overlooked a central courtyard, which housed the Kamp Galleria and the central glass dome of the Galleria enabled a peek into the furnishings carried by that store. An especial mention must be made about the wide and comfortable beds - neither too hard nor too soft. A turn down service was available in the evenings. There is a locker in the room and the selection of Nespresso Pods was more than just basic. There is a well stocked mini bar, which we did not use. The hotel is in the centre of the city, close enough to the waterfront and just a couple of minutes away from the larger departmental stores like Stockmann, Forum and the like. Public transportation if required is also close by. There are a couple of Michelin starred restaurants in the vicinity. Breakfast was served on the second floor. There is ample seating and essentially a buffet service. The spread was decidedly balanced in favour of the non vegetarians. there were a few items, that could be ordered a la carte, for which there was an additional charge. The Finnish pancakes, with the homemade marmalade and jams was especially tasty. My wife had an egg white omelette, that she was all in praise of. The staff were extremely polite and quite friendly and go the extra mile to make the guests feel at home. all in all we had an enjoyable stay in the hotel and would definitely like to stay here, if we come back to Helsinki."

"I booked a one night stay for a small staycation trip trough the Leading hotels of the world. Pros: Pre stay communication was done very smoothly by both the front desk and the concierge. They both replied within a few hours and offered assistance. The arrival experience was also on the positive side. The man who checked me in remembered that I had stayed at Kämp before and welcomed me back. The hotel was also able to accommodate both my early check in and late check out requests. Check out was also done well. The front desk upgraded me from Deluxe to premium Deluxe which was appreciated by me. The front desk had also left a lovely greeting card in Swedish as well as a few macaroons for me. This gave me a good impression. The accommodation was of high quality. I got a good night’s sleep in the bed. The marble bathroom was also much appreciated by me. The dinner experience at the new Àla Kämp restaurant was greatly enjoyed by me. Both the food and ambience of the restaurant were of high quality. The waiters and the hostess were also welcoming. The breakfast was of high quality and gave a great start for the day. The breakfast room also had a great view of the Esplanade park. Cons: There weren’t any cons that I experienced during my stay. Bassed on my experience I hope to get to have the opportunity to stay at Kämp again!"
