PB hotel design editorial

Built in 1888 as a county jail to a design by architect Johan Jakob Ahrenberg, the rust-red brick complex on Helsinki's Katajanokka peninsula served as a working prison for over a century before its conversion into Hotel Katajanokka in 2007. The original cell block structure remains intact — thick load-bearing brick walls, barred windows, and the building's distinctive institutional massing all preserved as found — giving the hotel an architectural integrity that purpose-built properties rarely achieve. The conversion retained the granite base and the red brick of the facade without apology, the entrance staircase still carrying the civic weight of a nineteenth-century public institution. Inside, the interiors navigate the tension between the building's austere past and contemporary hospitality with considerable skill. Guest rooms arranged along former cell corridors show a palette of charcoal grey, deep crimson velvet curtains, and misty tree-motif wallpaper panels above the bed, framed prints of old padlocks and archival photographs keeping the carceral history present without gimmickry. The flooring shifts between patterned carpet with an ink-blot abstraction in some room categories and warm-toned timber planks in others. The restaurant and event spaces lean further into the raw material of the building — exposed aged brick walls lit from below by warm uplighting, globe pendants in smoked glass, long communal tables in reclaimed wood. The former cell doors, stainless-steel and original, remain visible in the banquet corridor, serving as the most direct acknowledgment of what this building once was.

"Absolutely fantastic 2 night stay as a family of 4 (Mum, Dad + 2 teens). We arrived after midnight to a warm hotel and friendly welcome. Easy check in and room was large with comfortable beds. The bathroom had complimentary shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and body lotion, as well as under floor heating!! Breakfast, dinner and "fika" (which is hot drinks and a cake snack 3-5pm) were all included in the room price. Breakfast was a HUGE variety, and dinner is one dish clearly advertised each day. The food was delicious, with dietary requirements labelled well. My daughter had Coeliac and she was able to eat so much as lots was gluten-free, and cross-contamination was catered for. The hotel is a beautifully converted prison, with the history preserved in places. We didn't use the gym or sauna as had a short stay, but would return and factor time for this. The hotel is right next to a stop on the number 4 tram, but we also walked from the central station when we arrived (about 25 mins) and to the market square (10 mins). There is a 24 hour small supermarket a 2 minute walk if you need supplies. Check out was quick and easy, and not til midday! Shame we had to go earlier. Our luggage was securely stored for free until we came back to get it. We would love to come back to explore more of Finland and would stay here again. Thank you for having us."

"The rooms were terrific, as were the breakfast and dinner buffets. It was quite a walk from the hotel to restaurants and bars, but I am older and prefer being in the middle of everything. The staff was terrific, friendly, and very helpful! Because it was transformed from an old prison, I would just like to point out that it might not be great for those with mobility issues. Seems there were random steps all over the place. I was pointed to my room when I checked in that was "located on the same floor" at check-in, but I had to drag my suitcase down a flight of stairs to get to it. All in all, I really loved my stay there, and found the value outstanding!"

"Staying in a historic former prison is memorable, but the rooms felt modern and cozy. Breakfast was solid and the area was convenient. A fun option if you want something different."
