PB hotel design editorial

Constructed in 1908 as the headquarters of the Finnish Electric Company, the pale ochre Art Nouveau building on Pieni Roobertinkatu in Helsinki's Kaartinkaupunki district carries the weight of its original civic ambition in every arched window and pilastered facade panel. Hotel Lilla Roberts, which carved its 136 rooms from this landmark structure, preserves the building's generous proportions while layering an interior language that owes more to mid-century eclecticism than Nordic restraint. Inside, the lobby sets the tone immediately: a black and white marble-effect checkerboard floor, sofas upholstered in bold geometric-print fabric, sculptural black column lamps, and a vivid expressionist canvas anchoring the far wall. Guest rooms continue the same confident mix — dark oak floors, amber and charcoal curtains framing the building's original arched windows in the larger suites, zebra-print bench seats placed against faux-fur throws, and Miró-adjacent graphic prints hung in pairs above quilted headboards. The restaurant, by contrast, pulls in a rawer industrial sensibility: polished concrete walls and ceilings, encaustic patterned floor tiles, clusters of articulated task lamps suspended from a ceiling rack, and deep green velvet chairs grouped around Thonet bentwood bentwood café chairs — a pairing that gives the dining room the atmosphere of a Viennese brasserie refitted by someone with a very good eye for tension.

"We stayed at Hotel Lilla Roberts in Helsinki as a family of three for four nights from 6–10 May 2026, and we absolutely loved it. Having stayed at many great hotels around the world, we can honestly say this hotel had everything we were looking for. The location is excellent — very central and convenient, with most of Helsinki’s main sights within easy walking distance. The rooms were spacious, stylish, and well-equipped with everything we needed, and the lobby area had a really nice atmosphere. What stood out the most, though, was the incredibly friendly and accommodating staff, who made us feel welcome from start to finish. We booked the “Lux” room category, and our 12-year-old son was especially happy because the room layout effectively gave him his own separate room. It felt much more like a small two-room suite than we had expected from the description. One small thing to note is that weekend breakfast starts a bit late (from 8:00 am), but even that was handled perfectly by the hotel staff, who kindly prepared a takeaway breakfast bag for us with a selection of items from the buffet. Overall, this hotel offers excellent value for money, and we will definitely stay here again the next time we visit Helsinki."

"We enjoyed our stay here, the room was quiet, spacious with luxury bedding and towels but our only problem was with the air conditioning which was insufficient to cool our room. The breakfast was a good selection and nice to be offered choices of coffee. Good location for walking to harbour, station and centre. Lovely international staff."

"I was really looking forward to my stay at this hotel, but it was just okay. The location is excellent and close to sights and amazing restaurants. The breakfast was pretty good, and the restaurant staff were so lovely and warm (shout out to Alina), which is a sharp contrast to reception. Every person I interacted with at reception was professional but cold and not very welcoming. The beds are comforable, but the room lacked character and stylish decor, which is suprising considering the lobby is well decorated. Rooms are also not soundproof - I could hear the person in the room above me walking and moving chairs at 5am."

"This is a stylish art deco hotel in a great location near Esplanadi Park. Our room was an average size but with a view looking straight across to the other building. It had some mod cons like dressing robes and a soft close toilet seat, but no slippers, no coffee machine and no USB sockets. And whilst the bed was relatively comfortable, we found the pillows really poor. We also didn't like the small shower room where the poorly designed walk-in shower led to the shower room floor being covered in water every time we had a shower. The lobby bar was dimly lit but it was yet another place where they serve you an expensive cocktail without any complimentary snacks (mixed nuts were an additional €3). There's a gym in the basement which was sparsely equipped but it was roomy and fine for a quick workout. The included breakfast was an average buffet spread. Disappointingly, an omelette was an extra €6.50 (or €3 for a fried egg). Overall, we liked the location but were left quite underwhelmed with the hotel itself."
