PB hotel design editorial

A Helsinki city block that has anchored the Kamppi neighbourhood since the 1920s, the cream stucco neoclassical building with its mansard roofline and arched ground-floor arcades carries the formal authority of Finnish National Romantic architecture's more restrained civic cousin. Hotel St. George opened here in 2018 after a conversion overseen by Finnish firm Stylt Trampoli, which faced the challenge of threading contemporary Scandinavian warmth through rooms whose original ornamental plasterwork — ceiling roses, deep cornice mouldings — insists on being heard. The interiors resolve that tension with considerable intelligence. Guest rooms work a palette of sage green, warm taupe, and muted olive against herringbone oak floors, with Hans Wegner-lineage chairs and cane-fronted cabinetry keeping the Nordic reference grounded rather than decorative. The centrepiece is the glass-roofed atrium bar, where a monumental sculptural chandelier — an explosion of steel feather forms suggesting a bird mid-flight — hangs beneath a barrel-vaulted skylight, the surrounding walls dressed in large-format botanical murals. Art is treated as structural rather than incidental throughout the property's 153 rooms. Below ground, the spa pool room achieves a quietly different register: travertine-toned limestone surround, arched recesses, and a single oversized ceramic vessel placed at the water's edge, the whole space calibrated toward stillness rather than spectacle.

Hotel St. George Helsinki Reviews

"We loved our stay at the St. George. Prior to coming, I emailed with questions. They were answered immediately by an amazing hotel staff member. She was the same person who checked us in and she remembered us! Our room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast was absolutely amazing. We are still talking about the sourdough bread. The hotel itself is in a great location. We would absolutely stay here again."

"I stayed at the Hotel St George for a five day vacation in Helsinki, and couldn't be more pleased with my choice! I stayed in a Serenity Studio room type, and while it was definitely on the smaller side, it was well designed and comfortable, and the perfect place to land after a long day out exploring the city. First, the location of this hotel is excellent. It is on a beautiful, quiet park, a couple blocks from the Esplanadi, and walking distance to almost everything in central Helsinki. Nothing seemed to be more than a 15 - 20 minute walk away (tops), and many things were a 5 minute walk. There is also a great cafe on the ground floor which is perfect for breakfast or lunch, and seems to have lots of locals dining there as well. The room we stayed in, the Serenity Studio, was good as an entry room-type. This room type comes with spa access (sauna, pool, steam room). The room was comfortable, though small, with thoughtful design touches and functionality features - there was a decent sized built in wardrobe, slim night stands with charging next to the bed, a modern and new bathroom, and a relaxing decor style. The spa at the hotel was ok, but I wasn't too impressed with it. We went daily for a sauna and a steam room sit. You have to make a reservation via the front desk to prevent overcrowding, and even then, it felt like there were sometimes a lot of people there. The locker room wasn't always super tidy, and generally it didn't feel as special as it could have. But maybe I was expecting something a bit more magical in Finland, the world capital of sauna! The staff was friendly and helpful, and housekeeping was very kind and attentive! No one hesitated when we asked for help, and were always professional and polite. Overall, I think this is a great choice for a stay in Helsinki; and still felt a bit undiscovered, with a boutique feel - like a very chic address to stay at for your visit. I'd much rather stay here than at a chain hotel; and it feels like it's in a more perfectly peaceful area with more modern sophistication than Hotel Kamp which we were also debating staying at."

"This was one of the best hotels I have stayed in- everyone I encountered was professional and kind and helpful. I ate one dinner here, had some laundry done and booked a massage everything was perfect. The location is fabulous for walking the city. Highly recommend."

"We stayed at St George last year in the Atelier Studio with balcony and thought this was absolutely the best hotel in Helsinki. This year we booked the same room expecting the same quality but got one facing the back with basically views of walls. The balcony was a miserable little one. Not once did we step onto it. When we asked to change at reception it was obviously not possible because every room was full. The woman at reception said ”if the balcony is important to you make sure you request one with a view”. Well, given that we paid quite a lot of extra to have the balcony, that would be evident! So yes, this hotel is very nice, just be careful with your room choice! We felt ripped off and probably won’t return."
