PB hotel design editorial

Anchoring the Place de la Comédie directly opposite Victor Louis's Grand Théâtre — one of the finest neoclassical monuments in France — the building that houses the InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel has carried civic weight since it was commissioned in 1776, its golden Aquitaine limestone facade mirroring the theatrical grandeur across the square. The five-storey structure, with its rusticated arched ground floor, continuous balconied piano nobile, and disciplined rhythm of tall windows, was conceived as the natural counterpart to Louis's masterwork, and two and a half centuries of Bordeaux street life have only deepened that relationship. The 130-room property underwent a major restoration completed in 2010 that brought its interiors into the Intercontinental fold while preserving the ceremonial bones of the building. Inside, the guest rooms move between two registers: deeper suites furnished with canopied beds upholstered in cobalt-blue striped fabric, toile-hung walls, and Louis XVI-style fauteuils, and more intimate rooms where burgundy damask wallcovering and gilt-edged headboards give the atmosphere of a well-appointed Second Empire townhouse. The restaurant, fitted with deep sage-green panelling, herringbone parquet, and barrel-backed chairs in crimson velvet with gold stripe, gains an elegant double-height spiral stair in dark timber. Above it all, the rooftop terrace — planted with umbrella pines and furnished with terracotta-red café tables — frames the twin spires of the Cathédrale Saint-André across Bordeaux's ochre roofline, grounding even its most contemporary gesture in the city's long visual argument with itself.

"A lovely eperience! The hotel is beautiful and staff are very helpful and pleasant, especially good with suggestions of where to eat or directions. Perfectly situated as well! Rooms are very well appointed and very comfortable."

"As an IHG member, from another hotel somewhere and sometime, I was a bit surprised by some of our experiences at the hotel. It’s a lovely building with a beautiful location and very nice rooms (based on the one we had). Our problems started when we arrived from our river cruise before 10am and were told, not surprisingly, our room wasn’t ready. What we were told was that it would be ready by 3pm and they would ring if it was ready beforehand. Our luggage was kept aside in the foyer area. We were back in the area around 1pm and popped into the hotel to see if the room was ready. It wasn’t as housekeeping hadn’t attended to it at that stage, 3 hours after we had arrived. At 2.15 am we were very weary and popped back to check on the room situation. Housekeeping still hadn’t got there so we popped out for a short stroll to cool down. Our luggage was still sitting in the foyer. At 2.45pm we popped back and asked again. Room still not ready so reception rang housekeeping who said 15minutes at the latest (i.e 3pm). We sat in a very small waiting area where there was a fresh drink container. I tried for a drink but it was empty. At 3.10pm I asked again about our room - 10 minutes after the absolute maximum time it would be ready. Not ready but would ring housekeeping! A few minutes later we got our keycards. Almost 5.5hours after we arrived. I’m glad I’m an IHG member! So, we went to our room and waited 15 minutes for our luggage. Nothing so my wife went down to get our carry-on bags and caused chaos because that was the job of staff to deliver bags. I suspect we would still be waiting for them a day later if she hadn’t gone down. But that’s not all. The guy who brought the bags noticed we needed a second suitcase stand and said, I believe, he would ask housekeeping to deliver one. Thirty hours later and were still waiting. Breakfast in the brasserie was nice but for some reason the young staff members on duty didn’t seem to see our used dishes and fruit juice glasses so they piled up on our table. Collected just as we were about to leave. We had just arrived from a river cruise where staff service was impeccable. Much different from our experience in the Intercontinental. An exception was a bald headed guy serving in the bar. He was very friendly and, even better, helpful. And proactive."
