PB hotel design editorial

A late nineteenth-century hôtel particulier in Bordeaux's patrician Saint-Seurin-Fondaudège quarter, its limestone facade crowned by a conical turret and punctuated by wrought-iron balustrades, sets the architectural stage for Yndo Hotel — a property that derives its character from the productive friction between bourgeois grandeur and sharply contemporary design sensibility. The building's pierre de taille stonework, a material so embedded in Bordeaux's urban identity that UNESCO cited it as part of the city's World Heritage designation, survives immaculate, while the courtyard terrace below plays host to chartreuse parasols and woven resin chairs that make no attempt at historical deference. Inside, that tension sharpens considerably. The salon de réception deploys a dark-toned, high-ceilinged setting — original panelling, herringbone parquet, arched plasterwork — as a backdrop for a furniture selection that leans heavily into collectible design: a whale-tail sculptural seat in dark mohair, a shaggy textural armchair that recalls the work of Lara Bohinc or similar object-based designers, a sheepskin wingback, and a floral-printed circular rug beneath a crystal globe chandelier. Guest rooms strike a cleaner register, walnut headboards and mid-century-inflected writing desks in the larger suites, leaner Scandinavian-influenced pendant lighting and graphic blue-grey carpet in the standard rooms. The courtyard terrace, wrapped by the curved tower base and laid in dark herringbone brick, pulls the whole composition into something coherent and quietly assured.

"I have stayed in many, many hotels so - rightly or wrongly - I like to think I can tell when a hotel reaches the required standard and when it does not. In this case, it did not and this is why I am writing this rare review. This stay was booked for my wife’s birthday. We flew half way around the world. We had high expectations but we started badly and I’m afraid that set the tone. After a five hour drive, I was quite tired but nobody was at reception when we arrived. I drove the car into the courtyard - not easy through the narrow gateway. My first interaction with the hotel staff was someone telling me I cannot park there. No welcome; no greeting followed by ‘could you please move your car to the car park?’ Just bring told: ‘You cannot park there.’ On arrival in our room, we noticed a constant, loud noise from the refrigerator. I saw that another reviewer commented on this. Our request for maintenance was either ignored or forgotten. We had to turn the fridge off to get some peace. At 1 am on my wife’s birthday, very loud music started in the room below. I complained to reception but it seems to little effect. We slept with earplugs. When I removed the earplugs at 7 am, the music was still playing. I am not sure if the hotel considers this acceptable behaviour by guests, but they didn’t seem keen to do much about it. Overall, I seemed to encounter a lot of inexperienced staff and an attitude that just lacked positivity and a ‘can do’ approach. Also, the little ‘extras’ that you expect from a top hotel were not there. It was a very average experience. Given our experience, I genuinely thought we might get a discount on our bill - especially with no fridge - but no. Full price was charged, including for a minibar item that was not consumed. We won’t be coming back."

"We absolutely adored our stay at the Yndo Hotel! It is truly an oasis within the charming city of Bordeaux with an incredible location. Our room was spacious, thoughtfully designed, wonderfully quiet, and kept impressively cool thanks to great air conditioning during a summer heatwave. The staff were incredibly kind and hospitable, setting the tone for a wonderful stay from the moment we arrived. Breakfast deserves a special mention: a small but beautifully curated spread of high-quality offerings, from various cheeses, pastries, and crepes to French toast, cured meats, smoked salmon, seasonal fruit, fresh bread, and yogurt. Eggs made to order round it out perfectly. If you are considering the Yndo Hotel for your stay in Bordeaux, just book it! It will be a highlight of your entire vacation."

"We had a wonderful 5 night stay at this hotel. Staff throughout the hotel were pleasant and always ready to assist. First impressions are important. We felt welcomed when we walked in. The check in/out process was quick and hassle free. We booked the Crazy Room on the top floor. It was bright, spacious and comfortable. Service during breakfast was outstanding. Staff were friendly and attentive. The breakfast foods were delicious, including eggs made to order. The property is well maintained and nicely decorated. It is located within walking distance to shops, restaurants and attractions. We were glad to have booked this hotel. It's a great place to stay in Bordeaux."
