PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against the Romanesque bell tower of the Collégiale de Saint-Émilion, its warm Pierre de Bordeaux limestone walls sharing centuries of proximity with one of the region's most sacred ecclesiastical landmarks, the Hôtel de Pavie has built an identity inseparable from the medieval village that surrounds it. The 18-room property, converted from an 18th-century mansion set around a walled garden, positions itself at an unlikely intersection: ancient stone and contemporary furniture, Grands Crus terroir and irreverent sculptural bulls grazing on a manicured lawn. That courtyard garden, visible from the upper rooms and framed by Italian cypresses, anchors the property in its Gironde landscape while keeping the Romanesque tower in constant dialogue with the modern additions below. Inside, the rooms navigate two registers with confidence. Certain suites lean into a cinoiserie-inflected tradition — lacquered red furniture, peony-printed wallpapers, nesting tables and Louis XVI bergères suggesting a wealthy Bordelais collector's private rooms — while newer accommodation favors dark walnut wall paneling against exposed limestone, white-painted timber ceiling beams, and globe pendant lights in a quieter, more contemporary key. The restaurant brings both threads together under cascading brass-and-glass chandeliers, where a floor-to-ceiling wine wall displays the cellar's Bordeaux holdings behind steel-framed glazing. Travertine-paved terraces furnished with wrought-iron chairs in green and white stripe overlook the vine-covered valley, the view confirming that no design decision here competes with what lies just beyond the balustrade.

About

The head above the village of Saint-Emilion, one foot in the vineyards, our 5-star Relais & Châteaux reflects its territory classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Succulent and tasty delights await for you in our house Hôtel de Pavie, in the heart of Saint-Emilion, where you will discover the exceptional wines for which our region is famous. You will stroll on the raised terrace with a panoramic view over the roofs of the medieval village, enjoying an afternoon coffee or during your breakfast, while enjoying the elegant rooms and the gourmet restaurant, La Table de Pavie, with a cuisine signed by Yannick Alléno. The Perse Family became the hosts of this renowned House in 2001. In 2007, the hotel was extended and transformed with the acquisition of an old house with Roman tiles. This Village House is connected to the Main House by crossing and strolling around our pretty gardens and by taking a glass elevator carved into the rock. Chantal Perse and her daughter Angelique Da Costa have made the Hôtel de Pavie an exceptional place in the heart of Saint-Emilion, dedicated to the art of living, with unreserved energy in all its dimensions.

"I was highly impressed by every aspect of my stay. The initial booking, the contact from Glenn prior to my dinner at La Table de Pavie, Daphne’s attention to every detail and Kate’s early morning energy and smile. On my departure morning at 6:30 am she gave me a take away cup of tea and croissant !!!! Thank you all and I look forward to my next visit."

"My wife and I spent 7 days at this hotel last week. It is really hard to describe how nice a hotel that it is. I will give it a try. The reservation process was very easy. Very soon after making the reservation, the hotel reached out to help us plan our program. They were available to provide suggestions and had a very thorough list of options. In addition, as our reservation came closer they made sure we knew how to get to the hotel and park the car. All this and we have not checked in yet. We got to the hotel. We knew it was very central. But we're surprised, it is the center of both the upper town and lower town. Wow. The room we booked in the village house was beautiful and very roomy. Housekeeping was excellent. Somehow they managed to clean the room while at breakfast and turndown service while at dinner. As I stated above, they helped us make our plans before we arrived. However, we chose to only book a couple days. The front desk helped us fill out the rest of the days after we arrived. We basically did one Chateau a day, but we decided to go to Chateau Pavie. They worked hard to find a slot for us. I recommend booking ahead if you want to go. It is worth a visit. Onto breakfast, we paid for the full breakfast option and it was a very good choice. The food was excellent, and we really felt it was an authentic French breakfast. We took our time. The service was excellent. The two main waiters Kate and Phillip were wonderful. We looked forward to seeing them each morning. They got each day started off in a great way each day. We will go back if we are there again. Of course! I recommend them highly if you are considering it."

"If you’re looking for an unforgettable stay in Saint-Émilion, Hotel Pavie absolutely exceeds every expectation. From the moment we arrived, the experience was seamless, warm, and incredibly refined. The setting is breathtaking—nestled right in the heart of the village with views that feel straight out of a postcard. What truly sets Hotel Pavie apart is the attention to detail. Every element, from the beautifully designed rooms to the impeccable service, reflects a level of care and sophistication that’s rare to find. The staff went above and beyond at every turn—thoughtful, intuitive, and genuinely passionate about creating a memorable stay. Their partners were equally exceptional, helping curate experiences that made our visit to Saint-Émilion feel exclusive and deeply personal. From world-class wine experiences to perfectly coordinated dining, everything was effortless and elevated. This wasn’t just a hotel stay—it was an experience we’ll never forget. Truly five-star in every sense. We cannot wait to return."
