PB hotel design editorial

Perched on the Montagne de Reims above the UNESCO-listed Champagne vineyards of Champillon, with the Marne valley unfolding in every direction below, the Royal Champagne Hotel & Spa was rebuilt and reopened in 2018 on the foundations of an eighteenth-century coaching inn that once served the postal road between Paris and Reims. The new low-rise structure, designed by local architectural practice Patriarche, steps along the hillside in pale limestone and timber-screened volumes, its horizontal layering calibrated to hold the panorama rather than compete with it. Interiors were handled by the Paris studio of Jean-Michel Wilmotte, who anchored the 49 rooms and suites in a palette drawn directly from the landscape outside — warm tawny golds, chalky whites, and vine-row greens translated into large-scale botanical wallcoverings, oak parquet floors, and brass disc wall sculptures clustered in constellations above upholstered wingback chairs. The dining room carries the most theatrical gesture in the building: a canopy of Baccarat-style crystal chandeliers suspended over herringbone parquet and plum velvet armchairs, a mural of equestrian figures lending the room a faint Napoleonic charge appropriate to this corridor of French imperial history. From the infinity pool, the Marne valley stretches toward Épernay in a sweep of chalky soil and regimented vines that makes the view itself feel like the main amenity — one the building, wisely, does very little to interrupt.

"A beautiful super clean hotel in the Champagne region easily accessible from the motorway. Spa area has a lovely pool and gym . We ate in the bistro restaurant but bar food also available. Also made us a breakfast to go as we left early ."

"Travel agent review. With just 47 rooms, it offers an intimate, luxury experience overlooking the vineyards of Champagne. The spa is truly divine, complete with a stunning indoor heated pool that feels especially magical in winter. Dining is equally extraordinary, with a Michelin-starred restaurant that elevates every stay. When the snow fell across the vines, i felt like I was in a fairytale. Recently ranked the 3rd best hotel in France by Condé Nast, this is a destination that delivers pure magic from start to finish 🇫🇷"

"What a wonderful stay at Le Royal. It really felt like being at home. Everyone catered to our every need including Thomas at the bar. Special shout out to Thomas who was my conversation partner while I waited for my friends to come back from shopping. He was personable, and made me feel so at home. Kuddos! Hope he is there when I return in the spring."

"Beautiful hotel greatly situated for visiting many of the champagne houses. Rooms are super nice and decorated in style. A few things though - reception staff should be better at “feeling” the mood of the guests. Had a few situations that made us uncomfortable. Also - the two restaurants are nice (one is a Michelin). We tried both and I must said it’s good but value for money and be discussed! Finally - the spa area is strange and I think the hotel would benefit from a spa expert from one of the Austria spa hotels in regard to interior design and floor situation plan. Overall a good experience. Will surely visit this place again in the future…"
