PB hotel design editorial

Perched above the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio on Corsica's southern coast, where maquis-covered hillsides drop toward one of the Mediterranean's most sheltered bays, a building clad in weathered timber and floor-to-ceiling glass announces a particular ambition: to make contemporary architecture feel inevitable in a landscape that usually resists it. Casadelmar, designed by French architect Jean-François Bodin and opened in 2004, achieves exactly that — its dark-stained wood cladding aging into the granite scrubland behind, while expansive glazed facades pull the bay, the mountains beyond, and the Corsican sky deep into every interior. The 32 rooms and suites, spread across villas and the main building, work a palette of pale limestone floors, blond oak headboards, and linen-toned upholstery that never competes with the landscape framed in every opening. Arne Jacobsen's Egg chair appears in caramel suede in the more generous suites, grounding the interiors in a mid-century design literacy that feels considered rather than decorative. The restaurant, its ceiling articulated by a delicate grid of white-painted beams, uses a wall of pivoting glass panels to dissolve the boundary between dining room and pool terrace — teak-decked and angled toward the gulf, the infinity edge of the water dissolving into the bay below. The effect across the property is closer to a very well-edited private house than to a resort hotel, which is precisely what Bodin and the owning Canarelli family set out to build.

"A charming boutique hotel with great vibes and thoughtful touches This is what I call a cute boutique hotel. The location was great — most restaurants were nearby. Still, I’d highly recommend renting a car so you’re not stuck in one area — there’s so much to see around Porto Vecchio. Breakfast was a highlight: an amazing spread of fresh fruit, meats, and pastries — everything was delicious. We couldn't eat at the breakfast terrace due to the wind. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to try lunch or dinner at the hotel as We caught some unusually windy days, so the beach and pool weren’t very enjoyable. Instead, we spent time at nearby beach clubs, which worked out great. Due to the wind, we also weren’t able to take the ferry to the sister hotel, Plage del Mar, and the drive was a bit too far for us. The suite we booked was spacious and very comfortable — we slept incredibly well. The only downside was the toilet setup: it was in a separate room near the entrance, with a very small sink and a persistent odor that never really went away. The gym was very small — just one treadmill, one elliptical, and some dumbbells — so we skipped it and went hiking instead. We drove about an hour to Piscia di Ghjaddu, a beautiful waterfall hike that was totally worth it early in the morning. Overall, the staff was wonderful — attentive and kind throughout our stay. Despite a few minor issues, we left with great memories and would definitely consider coming back."
