Poised on the hillside above Evian-les-Bains with Lake Geneva dissolving into the Alps beyond, the white Belle Époque mass of Hotel Royal has commanded this particular view since 1909, when it was built by the Société Anonyme des Eaux Minérales d'Evian as the centrepiece of a resort empire tied to the town's famous spring water. The building's symmetrical facade — seven storeys of rendered white render, dark-framed balconies, and a terracotta-tiled mansard roof — carries the unhurried confidence of an era when grand lakeside hotels were civic gestures as much as commercial propositions. Across its 154 rooms, a renovation has drawn the interiors decisively toward the present: warm oak wall panelling runs floor-to-ceiling in the suites, patterned wool carpets in deep cobalt and gold repeat the leaf motif throughout, and ochre-yellow throws anchor the beds in a colour drawn, presumably, from the surrounding landscape at harvest time. The public spaces show the renovation's most assured hand. The bar is housed in a rotunda whose arched walnut-lined walls curve up to meet a cascading chandelier of individual glass rods — an ensemble that manages to feel both architecturally specific and contemporary without straining against the building's century-old bones. Outside, a crescent-shaped infinity pool set into the hillside terrace frames the lake with mosaic tilework carrying the hotel's monogram, green-and-white parasols and teak loungers completing a composition that the Belle Époque architects would likely have recognised as their own.
