PB hotel design editorial

Michel Guérard built something stranger and more personal than a hotel at Les Prés d'Eugénie — a village within a village, assembled across several centuries of Gascon architecture in the thermal spa town of Eugénie-les-Bains, where Napoleon III's empress once took the waters. The main maison, a late nineteenth-century manor of pale render and steep tiled rooflines, anchors the ensemble from behind a parterre garden where Canary Island palms are lit from below at dusk, their trunks throwing warm gold against the grey-shuttered facade. The effect, as visible in the exterior image, is genuinely subtropical: the Landes microclimate conspiring with a century of careful planting to make southwest France feel briefly like somewhere else entirely. Inside, the interiors carry the accumulated texture of a private house rather than anything assembled to brief. Exposed oak beams, left dark and rough, cross ceilings in both the dining room and the guest rooms; terracotta tomettes worn smooth underfoot anchor spaces layered with antique kilims in indigo and rust, canopied beds trailing white muslin, and armchairs upholstered in toile-inflected printed cotton. The dining room gathers grey-painted Louis XV caned chairs around linen-draped tables beneath oval still-life oils and a full-length portrait — the whole atmosphere closer to an inhabited provincial salon than a restaurant interior. Fires burn in stone surrounds in the larger suites, the chimneypieces original to the buildings.

"First, What a spectacular estate! The grounds are so impressive; the swimming pool and spa divine; all the gardens; the decor of all the public spaces and restaurants stunning. Our room opens up to beautiful terrace overlooking the fountain. Nice chic decor. Very comfy bed. Very Slight musty odor throughout the second floor of room n corridor (maybe hotel just opened for season or the downstairs thermal sulphur pool smell). We tried 2 hotel restaurants: La ferme aux grives at a wonderful farmhouse. Food was nice and great presentation. Service very good. Prix fixe $65. Then it was the 3 Michelin star restaurant michel guerad (45 years in a row). the food was excellent. The presentation, the setting, the taste, the freshness etc . The setting of the restaurant equally stunning. Our waitstaff delightful. THEN IT WENT SO WRONG It was a balmy evening. The 2 rooms have a through fireplace. We were seated next to the fireplace in the center room. Not even half way through the meal, the guests on the other side decide to ask to light the fireplace for show/ambiance. However the smoke went straight through to our side as our fireplace was not lit. At one point the smoke was so bad I had to go outside as I was coughing. After 2 times of asking to open the windows, the man in black tails finally opened them to relieve some smoke. And when we complained about the smoke, he simply said agitatedly that that’s just how it is and we do it all the time. No apologies, no accomodation in buying us a round of cocktails or ask if we prefer to move to another table or at le orangerie next door. Meanwhile our hair n clothes all smelled of smoke. The meal was 305 euros per person plus a 275 euro bottle of wine and 4 cocktails; so a 1600 euro meal for 4 people and lasts 3.5 hrs. The smoke happened one hour into meal and we had to suffer through the lingering of smoke for the remaining 2.5 hours. We were shocked at the attitude of the restaurant especially the guy in black tails who seem to be in charge. (The rest of waitstaff were very nice) The next morning when we checked out of hotel after 2 nights, the receptionist asked how was the stay n we said it was very nice except for the smoke. Her reply was I heard about it from him. Once again no apologies or any accommodations. Truly a shame to give it a low rating but really unacceptable especially for a relais chateaux hotel which always prides itself on services. We stayed at 3 different ones on this trip. And there’s an indifference in attitude on a lot of staff. Sometimes beautiful settings is not enough."
