PB hotel design editorial

Louise de La Vallière, the teenage favourite of Louis XIV who retreated from Versailles to a Carmelite convent in 1674, lends her name and her ghost to this seventeenth-century château in the Touraine village of Reugny. Château Louise de La Vallière was restored and converted into a hotel by its current owners with a brief to reconstruct not just a building but an entire atmosphere — the candlelit, heavily upholstered, morally complicated world of the Ancien Régime. The tuffeau stone façade, bleached to near-white and crowned by a slate-roofed pavilion tower with its original weathervane, presents the composed geometry of Louis XIII architecture, while the latticed wooden gates framing the entrance courtyard carry the weight of a working estate rather than a museum piece. Inside, the interiors make no concession to contemporary minimalism. Bedrooms are hung with damask wallcovering in deep blues and sage greens, the headboards carved into extravagant baroque silhouettes upholstered in crimson velvet, oil portraits of seventeenth-century aristocrats observing from gilt frames. Original beamed ceilings run low across the chambers, stone fireplaces with carved entablatures anchor each room, and herringbone parquet floors creak with appropriate authority. The dining salon pushes further still — antler trophies mounted between gold-toned boiserie panels, cane-backed Louis XV chairs, crystal stemware catching the afternoon light that floods through tall south-facing windows. The effect is closer to inhabited time-travel than period-revival hospitality.

Château Louise de La Vallière Reviews

"Our stay at Château Louise de La Vallière was nothing short of extraordinary—an experience that perfectly captures the essence of refined French hospitality and timeless elegance. From the moment the gates slowly opened, we knew we were arriving somewhere truly special. We were graciously welcomed by Gaston, and by the effortlessly elegant and delightful Mire Grebenstein, whose presence alone sets the tone for what is to come. We were escorted to a terrace overlooking the exquisite parterre gardens to check in—a breathtaking introduction that immediately immersed us in an atmosphere of luxury and quiet grandeur. Our room was absolute perfection. Every inch of the château is meticulously curated, with an eye for detail that is both sophisticated and deeply comforting. There is a harmony here—between history, beauty, and modern indulgence—that is very rare to find. One of the most charming moments of our stay unfolded later that evening. We ventured into town for dinner, only to realize rather quickly that it was not quite the right fit for us. After the amuse-bouche, we made a discreet exit. Upon returning to the château, we were astonished to find Gaston waiting for us in the parking area. With a knowing smile, he said, “You must be very hungry.” We were both surprised and amused—how could he possibly know? As it turns out, the chef from the restaurant had called the château to say, quite simply, “They belong with you.” In a gesture that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this remarkable place, Gaston immediately invited us to dine at the château instead. What followed was an unforgettable evening—warm, attentive, and utterly delicious. It is this level of intuition, care, and seamless service that transforms a stay into something truly magical. Château Louise de La Vallière is not just a destination—it is an experience, a feeling, and a memory that lingers long after you leave. We cannot wait to return"

"This is a gem! We stopped for one night earlier this month on our way back to Paris as it's very conveniently located near the autoroute. The castle went through a €15 million magnificent renovation while keeping the actual feel of what it used to be when it was built, only better as you have all the modern touches we now come to expect in a 5 star hotel. The owner is also the manager, so there is a good chance you will meet her. The staff is friendly and competent. They want you to have a terrific stay and they do everything they can to make it happen. Each room is different, so each stay can feel anew. We highly recommend this hotel for a stay in the Loire Valley to visit the famous castles in the area."

"Beautiful grounds and very accommodating staff. Worthwhile to at least spend one night in a period chateau. Room was roomy and decorated for the historical feel, although some additional lighting would have been appreciated. As our room was on the top floor, it meant two levels of circular marble stairs so not recommended for those with mobility issues. Breakfast was very good as was the restaurant."
