PB hotel design editorial

Few Loire Valley châteaux have been restored with the documentary precision brought to Château du Grand-Lucé, an eighteenth-century classical pile built between 1764 and 1768 for Louis-Gabriel Colignon, treasurer to Louis XV. The hotel that now fills it — Hotel Chateau du Grand-Luce — was shaped by American designer Mimi O'Connor, who treated the project less as a renovation than an act of historical reconstruction, sourcing period-appropriate fabrics, furnishings, and wallcoverings through antique dealers and specialist ateliers to return each room as close as possible to its Louis XV and Louis XVI character. The results visible in the images are convincing: gilt caned beds, herringbone parquet floors, boiserie panels in celadon and cream, heavy silk drapes in chartreuse and indigo, and canopy beds hung with sage-green silk all suggest private ownership rather than hotel management. The grand salon preserves its original proportions with particular authority — Corinthian pilasters framing arched mirrors, an Orientalist carpet anchoring Louis XVI canapés upholstered in emerald velvet, a crystal chandelier presiding over the entire composition. Outside, the formal gardens drop in terraced parterre levels toward a circular pool bordered by gravel and clipped box, the surrounding landscape running to open parkland beyond a stone balustrade. Across its 17 rooms and suites, spread across three floors of the main house and dependencies, the property maintains the convincing atmosphere of a grand private house paused somewhere around 1780.

"Chateau du Grand Luce gave us the wedding of our dreams and we couldn't be more grateful for the hard work and attention to detail that Lisa and the team gave our special weekend. We spent over 12 months planning this very special celebration, and throughout the entire journey, Lisa Boyer (Hotel Manager) and her incredible team were simply outstanding. The Chateau itself is located a short drive away from Le Mans and is easily accessible by guests from Paris - we personally drove from London which was also seamless. Lisa guided us through every step of the process with warmth, professionalism, and genuine care. Planning a destination wedding can feel overwhelming, but Lisa made it feel seamless. She was always attentive, responsive, and thoughtful with suggestions – her eye for detail and calm reassurance made all the difference. Across our three-day celebration, everything ran flawlessly. From the breathtaking welcome dinner to the wedding day itself and through to our farewell gathering, the service, organization, and hospitality were impeccable. Every member of staff went above and beyond to ensure our guests felt cared for and that the atmosphere remained joyful, relaxed, and beautifully executed. The chateau itself is the perfect neoclassical architectural masterpiece that leaves you immersed in the fantasy of being your own French noble family - each room is uniquely styled to perfection with bold uses of colour that gave us a lot of fun pairing guests to each room. There are c. 19 rooms in total and we had 44 guests stay on site with another 16 guests stay in two local AirBnBs with a chauffeur collecting them for each event. We cannot recommend Château du Grand Lucé highly enough for anyone considering a wedding or special event. Thank you, Lisa and the team, for making our dream wedding a reality."

"Absolutely blown away on arrival at this place. Hidden in the corner of the village and you see the amazing gates. The Chateau is large in size and full of all the original features. Very pleasant staff show your room which was situated overlooking the front door for us. Sleep quality was amazing may I add. Very spacious inside and well set out. Dinner is a small but perfect menu which will not disappoint. The grounds are incredible and worth exploring. This was our first stop on this Car Tour- and truthfully we couldn’t have been happier. Lots of parking also. Great place to visit"

"Every aspect of this chateau and its hotel operation is exquisite. The chateau has been magnificently restored and maintained, with a glorious mix of grand old-world luxury, modern comforts (including high efficiency air conditioning, individually controlled in each room). This is a rare case where the reality is even more beautiful than their website photos. Service is the epitome of sophisticated, yet relaxed, personalized service (at the level of Aman Resorts). Client names and preferences are quickly known by the highly attentive and well-trained staff who seem to love their jobs. For such a small operation, the restaurant is remarkably competent, offering a wonderful and flexible mix of simpler brasserie style foods and Michelin calibre cuisine. Bonus: it is super dog-friendly with wonderful grounds (formal gardens, open spaces and forested areas). This property is worth the detour."

"We are German wedding planning agency and organized our clients wedding at Chateau du Grand Lucé. The location and hotel is stunning, beautiful and picture perfect. The attention to detail from the entire staff team was out of the ordinary. The entire organization and process of planning the wedding with Lisa has been nothing but perfectly organized, responsive and kind. I would 100% recommend planning a wedding at Chateau du Grand Lucé."

"We had the pleasure of staying at this truly one-of-a-kind hotel in May 2024 and needless to say - what a surprise. We did not know much about the hotel or surrounding area beforehand, but both my wife and I agree it was perhaps the single most memorable hotel experience we've had (among some pretty competitive options). The grounds are breathtaking, vast, and completely accessible. Even the entrance to the hotel is out of a movie, with slow gates opening into a beautifully manicured courtyard. Each and every room is unique and wonderful (the GM Ludovic gave us a tour of the open rooms so we saw quite a few). High ceilings, brilliantly curated art, heated bathroom floors and tubs - the rooms had it all. Perhaps the most spectacular aspect of the hotel, however, is the service. I cannot say enough about the GM Ludovic, who during our stay served as the bellhop, restaurant server, wine connoisseur, tour guide, and of course manager of the property. Kind, friendly and thoughtful, we visited before high season so Ludovic was short-staffed and basically did it all! (Ludovic, if you're reading this, hello from Zach and Dimitra and sorry we didn't review you sooner!). Last anecdote I need to share - we did a fair amount of wine tastings in the area, most of which were scheduled through the hotel. To our disappointment, one of the wineries we sought out was not offering tastings or tours. The restaurant chef, however, either knew the winemaker or had access to his wines, and so before we arrived he purchased a flight of bottles so we could sample them. This was, of course, without our asking him. All in all, truly wonderful and 11/10 experience. We will be back!"
