PB hotel design editorial

Spread across 1,000 hectares of Charente woodland in the village of Massignac, a medieval château flanked by conical-roofed towers and set against a private lake gives Domaine des Etangs a geographical remove that feels less like an amenity than a condition of the place itself. The fifteenth-century castle, along with a constellation of stone outbuildings converted into guest accommodation, was restored and opened as a hotel in 2014, its sixteen rooms and suites distributed across the main château, a mill, a farmhouse, and the round towers — each space shaped by the medieval fabric left intact around it. The interiors navigate a tension between rough stone and considered contemporary placement rather than resolving it through renovation. Exposed rubble walls rise to conical timber roofs in the tower suites, where clean-lined upholstered bed frames and blue velvet benches sit without apology against centuries-old masonry. In the main château rooms, bleached oak beam ceilings and wide-plank floors anchor a palette of terracotta and warm linen, Louis XV fauteuils reupholstered in geometric cut velvet placed alongside large-format photographic art panels. The restaurant preserves its flagstone floor and original fireplace beneath heavy chestnut beams, a glass-fronted wine tower providing the one sharp contemporary note. Outside, hardwood pool decking and folding canvas chairs face the kitchen garden, the château's pepper-pot tower visible above the hedgerows beyond.

About

A place to find balance through art, nature, and the time-honored traditions of French country living, Auberge’s newest European escape is a magnificent stone château set on 2,500 forested acres (1,000 hectares). Built more than 700 years ago by the knights of Chasteignier de la Roche-Posay, this storybook castle is an idyllic retreat steeped in serenity and devoted to l’art de vivre past and present. Resting amid the tranquil ponds that gave it its name, Domaine des Etangs, Auberge Collection and its picturesque farmhouse cottages overlook rolling hills and verdant meadows in which the finest Limousin cattle graze. Food is picked from the gardens, and art is as integral as nature in instilling the sense of equilibrium symbolized by the Domaine’s dragonfly emblem.

"We cannot say enough! We travel extensively and this was such a lovely spot along our driving sojourn from the Loire Valley to Nice that we changed our plans to stay an additional night. A blend of sophistication and ease without pretense. Le Domaine des Etangs does not disappoint! Walking around to discover the art and furnishings inside the chateau is a pastime in and of itself. The food is beautiful, much of it seasonal from the garden and the service is warm. There's a floating tennis court(!) We played on it. Our 3 night stay was filled with authentic encounters with Damien, the general manager, Julie, the Spa Manager and too many of their wonderful Auberge colleagues to name. The spa is located in what used to be a mill house complete with a restored waterwheel. It has a bucolic view of one of the many "etang" or ponds. The stunning chateau grounds are sprinkled with a carefully curated art collection. We worked up an appetite covering much of the 7 miles or so of private hiking/walking trails throughout the lush green fields. Couples and families will enjoy equally as there are many activities to take part in (or not). The enormous "game room" in the chateau is enough to make a child out of any adult. A beautiful lesser known part of France, not at all far from Paris."

"We had a truly wonderful stay. The setting is absolutely stunning — the hotel is nestled among beautiful lakes with immaculately kept grounds that make it feel peaceful and secluded. It’s the kind of place where you can simply wander and take it all in. One of the highlights was the restaurant. We enjoyed lunch out on the terrace within the castle grounds, and it was nothing short of exceptional. The combination of great food, attentive service, and that incredible backdrop made for a really memorable experience. What really stood out throughout our stay was the staff. Everyone was warm, welcoming, and genuinely attentive without ever being overbearing. A special mention has to go to Adam, who was excellent — professional, friendly, and went out of his way to make sure everything was perfect. Overall, a fantastic experience and somewhere we’d happily return to."

"This is a magical place even in “Grisatre” of winter. It is very expensive, but with our AmEx platinum perks, we could splurge. Loved hiking for hours in the cold and rain to feel nature and peace. We were upgraded to the Soleil suite. It was enormous and had a view of the inside of the turret. It’s hard to look generosity and complain, but I’m particularly sensitive to light and in the suite’s main living room there is a a neon modern art sculpture that cannot be turned off, and the major light fixture is beautiful/enormous but cannot be dimmed. If you are sensitive to light, you might want to consider that when booking. The breakfast was excellent. We did not dine in the Michelin starred dining room, but our room service meal was perfect and with hot soup. We both were struggling with colds and were pleased that the food was hot when delivered. Special thanks for Charly, Louis, Bernadette and Leticia (sp?). The heating system does make a good bit of noise, and I get that it’s a very old building, but if you’re sensitive to sound (I guess I sound pretty sensitive!), noise canceling earbuds are helpful. The thermal area was very nice and clean. The cattle are beautiful and I was glad to hear they’re allowed to live their lives out on the estate; it made ordering my husband’s meal a little easier to think his beef was not one of the ginger-colored Limousin steers I had just watched hours before."

"My husband and I were married at Domaine des Étangs and had the most beautiful wedding here! It's hard to describe how idyllic this location is, from the incredible food to the beautifully appointed amenities. The hotel staff are so kind, professional, and helpful. We had unexpectedly cold and rainy weather for the wedding, the hotel was completely filled with guests, and the staff went above and beyond to make everyone comfortable and everything run smoothly, just as they have in our past visits. Part of why we chose this location for our wedding is that it is not just a beautiful place, it is a special place with a unique history and charm to which we will always return. We must give a special thank you to Matthieu Pasgrimaud and the staff at Restaurant Dyades who made our Rehearsal Dinner unforgettable. Also, to Julie Jeantet Nasri and the incredibly talented staff at the spa who saw many of our friends and family during the wedding. And specifically Julie, who made a calm space for me on the morning of my wedding and is absolutely exceptional. Thank you to Victoria, Tatiana, Guillaume and the rest of the staff at Domeine des Étangs, who helped everything to run smoothly in the face of changing weather, changing wedding plans, travel delays and all of the things which accompany a destination wedding, we are forever grateful!"
