PB hotel design editorial

Few hotels anywhere carry the peculiar distinction of forming part of an active Formula One circuit. The stepped concrete facade of the Fairmont Monte Carlo, rising above the legendary Fairmont Hairpin — the slowest corner on the Grand Prix calendar — transforms every May into a grandstand from which guests watch machines worth millions navigate a turn at walking pace. The building itself, completed in 1975 on the Pointe Focinane promontory where the principality meets the sea, is a product of its era: a low-horizontal modernist block of some 596 rooms spread across seven floors, its stacked terraces stepping back toward the Mediterranean in a rhythm that prioritizes the view over architectural flourish. Those terraces earn their keep. The rooftop pool deck, furnished with white-cushioned daybeds and warm-toned timber pergolas, opens onto an unobstructed panorama of the Ligurian Sea and the Rock of Monaco — among the more dramatic hotel pool settings in Europe. The interiors show two distinct generations of taste: older rooms carry a Riviera-summer freshness in pale blue walls, green grid carpets, striped curtains, and Louis XVI-style chairs, while more recently refreshed guestrooms favor bleached oak headboards, geometric indigo-patterned carpets, and blue velvet sofas that feel closer to contemporary Monaco than the Côte d'Azur classicism they replace. The open-air restaurant pavilion, its adjustable louvered roof casting striped shadow across iroko decking, keeps the Mediterranean visible at every table.

"Staying in Monaco requires a hefty budget but it’s worth it. The large hotel is bustling but the staff is everywhere to help. We opted for a Hairpin Curve room instead of a sea view and it was spacious even by US standards. The air conditioning was quiet and there were plenty of USB ports a mini-bar and a large balcony with an ashtray – it’s almost France after all. With the Grand Prix only 10 days away the surrounding area was buzzing with preparations which was more interesting than a nuisance. The restaurants were top-notch and despite catering for large numbers the attention to detail was impeccable. One of us needed a gluten-free diet and it was catered for without any problems, starting with delicious bread rolls. Overall, it was a fantastic place to stay and I’ll definitely return when I can afford it again!"

"Staying at the Fairmont Monte Carlo felt like being right in the middle of the Monaco experience. One of the coolest parts was the location directly by the famous Formula 1 hairpin turn — we loved watching the Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Bentleys, and other luxury cars cruise by all day. It honestly became entertainment on its own. The hotel is in a fantastic walkable location. We walked to the Monte Carlo Casino, nearby restaurants, shopping, and the local SPAR grocery market which was super convenient for water, wine, snacks, and quick items during our stay. The rooms are renovated and were very comfortable and clean. The beds were excellent, and after long travel days we slept really well. The balcony area was nice to relax on, although our particular room overlooked the interior courtyard instead of the water. One thing worth mentioning is there is not a true refrigerator in the room — only a minibar cooler. We also highly recommend doing the Monaco hop-on hop-off bus tour while staying here. It gave us an easy and scenic overview of Monte Carlo and the surrounding areas without needing to navigate all the hills ourselves. One thing travelers should know ahead of time: Monaco does not use Uber. They have their own Monaco Taxi system. The app gave us issues creating an account because of strict security verification, but simply calling for a taxi worked perfectly every time. Cars arrived within minutes and drivers accepted both cash and card securely. The hotel itself is large, so depending on your room location, the walk from the elevators can feel long. But overall the experience, location, views, and atmosphere made this a memorable stay in Monaco."
