PB hotel design editorial

Directly across from Charles Garnier's Casino de Monte-Carlo, in the heart of Monaco's Carré d'Or, a cream stone Belle Époque palace that opened in 1889 has spent well over a century as the principality's most enduring address. The Hôtel Métropole Monte-Carlo carries that inherited authority in its façade — curved balconies, Italianate cornices, and a sandstone elevation that mirrors the casino's own architectural register across the gardens. Karl Lagerfeld's 2004 intervention gave the pool area and select public spaces a cooler, more contemporary sensibility, introducing clean white canopies and limestone pool decking that now frame a direct sightline back toward Garnier's copper domes — one of the more considered pieces of staging in European hospitality. The 126 rooms and suites maintain the register of a well-appointed private residence rather than a corporate grand hotel: silk damask wallcoverings in warm ivory, upholstered headboards in terracotta velvet, Louis XVI-derived writing desks in dark mahogany, and floor-length curtains in burnt orange taffeta that pool generously at the balcony doors. The restaurant, overseen for years by Joël Robuchon and bearing his culinary imprint, carries a coffered plaster ceiling and open kitchen framed by floor-length linen curtains, with low barrel chairs upholstered in aged olive velvet arranged around white-clothed tables. The effect throughout is of a building entirely at ease with its own history.

"Superb staff, old world charm and elegance, pure style not flashy"

A Tripadvisor traveler review

"From the moment we arrived at the Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo, we felt like we had stepped into exactly what the French Riviera is supposed to be-- and then somehow even better. From the outside, the hotel is absolutely stunning. The building was covered in blooming jasmines that made the entire property smell incredible every single evening. It honestly felt magical walking back to the hotel at night. The valet service and check-in experience were unlike anything we’ve experienced before. Instead of standing at a counter waiting, the concierge sat us down, helped us relax, and brought us welcome drinks and snacks while they handled everything. It immediately felt luxurious, calm, and effortless in a way we weren’t used to. We unfortunately can’t remember the name of the young man at the front desk who grew up in Los Angeles, but he made a huge impression on us. He was incredibly kind, informative, and refreshingly down to earth. He showed us to our room and made the experience feel personal and welcoming rather than overly formal. Our room was beautiful. The classic decor was exactly the elegant Monaco/French Riviera atmosphere we were hoping for, and the views overlooking the Mediterranean and the casino were incredible. We also had dinner and drinks at the bar our first night, and the staff kindly stayed open a little later for us. The food was excellent! especially the chicken club sandwich, which we’re still thinking about. One of our favorite parts of staying here was how walkable everything was. We could easily explore Monaco from the hotel and return whenever we wanted. We also ordered room service during our stay, and it was always prompt, fresh, and surprisingly delicious. The checkout process was just as smooth as the arrival. Valet was consistently kind, opening doors, quickly bringing the car around, and making everything feel seamless from start to finish. We would absolutely recommend Hotel Metropole Monte-Carlo to anyone considering a trip to Monaco. It truly made the experience feel unforgettable."
