PB hotel design editorial

Anchored into a sheer limestone cliff above Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, with the Principality of Monaco visible to the west and the Ligurian Sea spreading flat to the horizon, the building that houses the Maybourne Riviera presented its architects with a structural problem that most coastal hotels never face: how to build vertically on rock while terrace-stepping horizontally toward the sea. Developed by Groupe Marzocco and designed by French architect Alexandre Giraldi, the eleven-floor tower rises from the cliff in stacked horizontal planes of glass and pale stone, its cantilevered terraces cascading down toward an infinity pool that appears, from certain angles, to dissolve directly into the water below. The interiors were entrusted to Rémi Tessier, the Monaco-based designer who has spent his career working at the intersection of Mediterranean light and restrained material luxury. Tessier's rooms move between two registers — one warmer, anchored in oak joinery, herringbone parquet, and organic-form furniture including a sculptural bench-base bed and biomorphic coffee table in dark stone and glass; the other cooler and more coastal, with limestone floors, floating timber bed frames, arc-backed desk chairs in brass and sage, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the sea like a held breath. The restaurant deploys the same restraint with greater drama: penny-mosaic floors, travertine wall panels, chrome-legged tables topped in white marble, and tub chairs upholstered in Adriatic blue leather arranged beneath curtains of sheer ivory falling from double-height glazing.

"The Maybourne Riviera is a spectacular hotel. I’ve had my doubts about the afterlife, but when my wife and I had completed our initial tour of our Infinity Pool Duplex room, I thought St. Peter was going to emerge, tap us on the shoulder, and say, “Congratulations, you made it!” Just heavenly. We first stayed at the Maybourne a year ago after a visit six months earlier when we were awestruck having an afternoon cocktail at Le 300 - the view of the Côte d’Azur coastline from the terrace or the floor-to-ceiling windows is unforgettable. We have stayed in some pretty upscale hotels around the world, and the Maybourne Riviera is our favourite. And that includes the overwater bungalows at the Four Seasons in Bora Bora - our Infinity Pool Duplex room eclipsed that experience. And it was not just the room - the staff is superlative. They imbue a sense of happy serenity, a wonderful complement to the unmatched views and the architectural mastery of the hotel. The memorable touches like the steady parade of little gifts that were left for us in the room speak to the thoughtfulness that has gone into making a stay at the Maybourne Riviera a luxury retreat. Our thanks to all the staff at the Maybourne Riviera for making our stay a weekend that we will NEVER forget!"

"Spectacular view of the Riviera coastline, and very accessible by car. Our driver, Moumine, recommended this wonderful spot for an afternoon glass of wine."

"Poor service on the Terrace Bar. There were 5 of us drinking cocktails. The waiter wasted too much time talking and was very slow. To order our 2nd drinks we waited 10 mins before we could get his attention. We were surprised such a “prestigious” hotel has sub standard service. I would not go out of my way to go there again."

"Absolutely stunning property, with a level of. service and staff like nothing else. Christina was absolutely fabulous as well as every individual we dealt with. It is really an incredibly unique place which must be experienced at least once. The rooms are beyond, the service 5 star ++, the food incredible and the entire vibe is very special. Would recommend in a second"

"Wow, wow, wow. Everything about this spectacular hotel is out of this world! Our arrival was superbly choreographed and Anna made us feel very welcome. No faffing around as you sometimes get even at other high end hotels, just efficient, very professional and courteous. The view from the room was absolutely breathtaking. In fact, more or less anywhere in the hotel has a stunning view. The top floor restaurant is probably the best though which has the full 180 of the coastline and is magical. Even after four days here, the view is still hard to believe. Service throughout the hotel, whether at the pool, restaurant, shuttle staff and cleaning staff was faultless and we were always made to feel like VIPs. Nothing was too much trouble. One day one of the staff at breakfast noticed my daughter had a nasty mosquito bite on her eyelid. Within five minutes another colleague was at our breakfast table with crème and an ice pack for her which was very effective. The next morning, the same lady remarked how much better it was looking. In many hotels you would have to ask for help like his, at the Maybourne it just happens by magic. The rooms are stunning, spotlessly clean, your belongings are discreetly tidied each day and the fit and finish of everything is so well done. The architecture is striking, the interior design so beautiful. I could go on with more superlatives but it would be just better to say, if you are thinking of staying at this hotel, do not delay. It is incredible and such an amazing experience to stay here. We will be back as fast as we possibly can. Congratulations to the whole team and thanks for such a lovely stay."
