PB hotel design editorial

Anchored into a sheer limestone cliff above Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, with the Principality of Monaco visible to the west and the Ligurian Sea spreading flat to the horizon, the building that houses the Maybourne Riviera presented its architects with a structural problem that most coastal hotels never face: how to build vertically on rock while terrace-stepping horizontally toward the sea. Developed by Groupe Marzocco and designed by French architect Alexandre Giraldi, the eleven-floor tower rises from the cliff in stacked horizontal planes of glass and pale stone, its cantilevered terraces cascading down toward an infinity pool that appears, from certain angles, to dissolve directly into the water below. The interiors were entrusted to Rémi Tessier, the Monaco-based designer who has spent his career working at the intersection of Mediterranean light and restrained material luxury. Tessier's rooms move between two registers — one warmer, anchored in oak joinery, herringbone parquet, and organic-form furniture including a sculptural bench-base bed and biomorphic coffee table in dark stone and glass; the other cooler and more coastal, with limestone floors, floating timber bed frames, arc-backed desk chairs in brass and sage, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that frames the sea like a held breath. The restaurant deploys the same restraint with greater drama: penny-mosaic floors, travertine wall panels, chrome-legged tables topped in white marble, and tub chairs upholstered in Adriatic blue leather arranged beneath curtains of sheer ivory falling from double-height glazing.

"I am beyond disappointed with our experience at Riviera. I had booked a table well in advance for my husband and me to celebrate our anniversary at Riviera restaurant on 8th of May at 19:00. Having visited this restaurant before, I specifically requested a nice table in hopes of having an unforgettable, special evening. When we arrived, the staff at the reception told us our reservation had been cancelled. I even showed them the digital confirmation on my phone as proof of the existing booking, but the receptionist flatly refused to honor it or provide us with a table. It was an embarrassing ordeal as we had to leave the line due to people waiting behind us. Not very professional since I love visiting all the maybourne hotels in London and their service is impeccable! So a huge disappointment from the French maybourne hospitality! I also have another reservation on the 15th June 2026 but I have resentment in case this type of service happens again! What hurt the most wasn't just the technical error, it was the attitude. I kindly explained it was our anniversary, but the staff was cold and dismissive. They offered no solution other than telling us they "could do nothing" and sending us away to a different restaurant on 14th floor. While the staff at the second location were friendly and apologized for the situation, the damage was already done. The ABC couldn’t give us the table with the best view as they had been fully booked for it. Again, thanks to the Riviera restaurant. Despite my repeated mentions of our anniversary, there was absolutely no acknowledgment from the staff. No "Happy Anniversary," no small complimentary gesture, not even a simple candle or a small cake. It felt like our special milestone meant nothing to the team. How can I trust Riviera to host a larger group or a milestone birthday if they cannot manage a simple anniversary dinner? When a venue fails this significantly, what "guarantee" or "currency" of trust can management provide to ensure this never happens again? A beautiful view or a nice menu cannot make up for a complete lack of reliability and hospitality. I expected a celebratory atmosphere but left feeling ignored and undervalued as a guest."

"The whole stay at the Maybourne Riviera was outstanding. You are at first captured by the incredible architecture and the warmth of welcome from the doormen and reception. The views for on our amazing accommodation is breathtaking. The room encapsulates everything you can possibly imagine in a modern luxurious space. The service at breakfast , dinner and bar were top notch. The pool area and attention are another level. A must go !"

"stayed at The Maybourne Riviera and was extremely disappointed with the level of service. At 00:15 at night, there was loud construction noise coming from the room above. This is unacceptable for a hotel of this level and effectively a violation of nighttime peace. When I contacted reception, the staff not only failed to resolve the issue but also stated that renovation work was ongoing and could not be stopped even at night. Even more shocking was the “solution” offered — to move to another room at 1 AM. Instead of ensuring basic conditions for rest, I was effectively forced to pack my belongings and move around the hotel with my luggage in the middle of the night due to a problem created by the hotel itself. Such treatment of guests is completely unacceptable, especially for a 5-star hotel. Nighttime noise, ignoring complaints, and shifting inconvenience onto the guest are serious violations of hospitality standards. I strongly do not recommend this hotel to anyone expecting peace, comfort, and professional service."
