PB hotel design editorial

Among the grandest hôtels particuliers lining Montpellier's Place de la Comédie quarter, the eighteenth-century mansion that became Hotel Richer de Belleval carries its name from the city's most celebrated Renaissance figure — Pierre Richer de Belleval, founder of France's first botanical garden. That lineage gives the property its animating conceit: a dialogue between classical French architecture and something considerably more alive and playful. The limestone façade, with its wrought-iron balconies and deep-set green entrance doors, presents as restrained Languedocian neoclassicism; inside, the brief handed to the design team pulls decisively in another direction. The interiors navigate that tension with considerable confidence. The covered courtyard restaurant, where Ionic stone columns frame a sweeping stone staircase, grounds tables set on circular botanical-print rugs in rich jewel tones — a device that plants the contemporary firmly within the classical without disguising either. Guest rooms divide across distinct decorative registers: some preserve original ornamental plasterwork friezes and green marble chimneypieces, furnished with biscuit-velvet curved armchairs and empire crystal chandeliers; others strip back to raw limewashed walls, leaving fragments of antique painted borders exposed mid-surface, layering crystal pendants and pale blue painted joinery over the archaeological evidence. The bar sets its own terms entirely — slate-grey panelling, cane-backed seating in forest green, and a turquoise-lacquered drinks cabinet that borrows its energy from a Milanese aperitivo bar rather than southern France.

"This hotel is beautifully designed, impeccably maintained, and very well located. The rooms themselves are stylish, comfortable, and thoughtfully appointed, and the staff is professional and responsive—though not especially warm. That said, there were a few disappointing aspects of our stay that future guests should be aware of. First, our room was spread across multiple levels: an entry, then four stairs down to the bathroom, followed by two additional staircases (three steps, then eleven) up to the bedroom. This layout made nighttime trips to the bathroom inconvenient and potentially unsafe. Compounding the issue, the automatic sensor lights only activated on the way up, not down, meaning you either had to fully turn on the lights or rely on a phone flashlight when descending in the dark. We found this both frustrating and hazardous. Importantly, nothing in the booking details or on the hotel’s website indicated that the room would have this kind of multi-level configuration. Second, the website suggested that our room would have an exterior view. In reality, it overlooked the interior courtyard where the restaurant is located. This meant there was no real view, and it was often noisy—early in the morning during setup and late into the evening during dinner service. Finally, we had an unfortunate experience with what we felt was a lack of transparency. One morning after a walk, we asked the front desk if we could grab a cup of coffee from the lobby machine. Instead, we were told to return to our room and that coffee would be sent up. While this wasn’t what we had requested, we agreed. Two coffees were promptly delivered—but at checkout, we were surprised to see a €26 charge for “room service breakfast.” When we questioned it, we were told this was simply the policy. For a hotel positioned as a luxury experience, we expected clearer communication and a more guest-centered approach. While we loved Montpellier and look forward to returning, we would choose to stay elsewhere next time."
