PB hotel design editorial

Colombage timberwork and creamy Caen limestone have defined the Normandy manor house for five centuries, and the ensemble of buildings that forms Les Manoirs des Portes de Deauville deploys both with the unhurried authority of something that was simply always there. Set on the approach to Deauville amid formal parterre gardens clipped into tight box hedges, the property brings together a cluster of half-timbered Norman structures — their steeply pitched terracotta roofs, corbelled towers, and grid-paned windows belonging unmistakably to the regional vernacular — alongside a heated outdoor pool framed by brick coping and lombardy poplars that punctuate the flat Pays d'Auge horizon. Inside, the interiors strike a balance that many French country conversions attempt and few achieve: the ancient fabric left entirely intact — exposed oak beams blackened with age, monumental Caen stone chimneypieces wide enough to stand inside, terracotta hexagonal floor tiles — while the furnishings draw from a quiet contemporary register. Bedrooms are dressed in washed linen, pale upholstered headboards, and sculptural ceramic table lamps sitting alongside Thonet-style bentwood chairs and dark writing desks, the effect closer to a considered private residence than a hotel room. The salon gathers navy and caramel velvet armchairs around the great open hearth, small red Flos-style accent lamps punctuating the stone walls, a curated shelf of ceramics and objects lending the space the atmosphere of somewhere actively lived in rather than staged for arrival.

"Fantastic stay at this beautiful, charming property. Landed in Paris after a long flight and drove straight here, 2 1/2 hour drive. It was late and we needed some food, so we were able to order from their “snack” menu. We had a delicious croque monsieur and the Buddha bowl. Celia took a great care of us , checking us in as well as in delivering our tray of food to our room. This property is so unique, comprised of smaller buildings all around the property. The main building which is quite cozy and welcoming, is where the breakfast is, which was very good. Lots of fresh pastries, fruit, yogurt, eggs, salmon, meats, and various juices, including a smoothie. We stayed in Domaine etang , a lovely suite with a sitting area, and a door that opened to the patio, which had a lovely little table and chairs as well as two chaise lounges It was so nice to sit outside and enjoy the peace. The room was wonderful, so cozy and comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was great and a highlight was the heated towel rack. Can’t recommend this highly enough. This is a wonderful choice and we were able to use our Hilton benefits as this is part of the Hilton small luxury hotel collection. Thank you, Tevin and Celia and the rest of the staff for your attentiveness. This was a wonderful way to start our France trip! Merci! I said"

"A charming little place offering self-catering accommodation in very old converted cottages, with additional rooms available in the main building. Unfortunately, this type of accommodation does not work well for four adults—or the equivalent, as in our case with our two children aged 20 and 23. There is only one bathroom with a toilet and shower, which is simply inadequate for four adults. Lose, rickety forcet. It might be manageable with small children, but even then there are practical concerns: the single beds are located in a mezzanine area, while the double bed is on the ground floor, connected by a rather dubious staircase that wouldn’t feel particularly safe for younger children. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, which was a definite highlight of the stay. However, the cooking facilities in our cottage were extremely limited—though to be fair, we hadn’t planned to cook much anyway. That said, the use of interior space was quite poor. There was a large fireplace occupying a significant portion of the living area, seemingly more for aesthetic purposes than practicality. That space could have been used far better, for example by adding storage, hanging space, or even repositioning the TV. As it stood, wardrobe space was minimal—about 50 cm wide—which is not sufficient for four people. Keeping the cottage warm was also an issue. There was a white heating unit in one corner that slowly pumped out warm air, but it was ineffective and came with no instructions. In the end, we gave up trying to make it work properly, and the cottage remained uncomfortably cold for our April stay."
