PB hotel design editorial

Eugène Ewald's 1885 bathhouse on Rue du Bourg-l'Abbé spent a century accumulating lives before it became a hotel — first as a genuine thermal establishment for the Marais bourgeoisie, then as one of the great Parisian nightclubs of the 1970s and 80s, where Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol shared the pool with the city's creative class. The conversion that produced Les Bains Paris in 2015 treated this layered biography as the brief rather than the obstacle. Architect Vincent Bastie preserved Ewald's Haussmannian limestone façade intact, its arched portal and BAINS inscription still lit above the entrance at night, while cutting new light-filled courtyards into the building's interior mass to bring daylight into what had been a largely subterranean social world. The split between designers captures the property's dual character precisely. Tristan Auer handled the 39 guestrooms in pale tones — washed concrete walls, veined marble headboards, terrazzo side tables with graphic inlaid detailing, dark patterned carpet underfoot — giving them an atmosphere closer to a well-appointed Parisian apartment than a conventional hotel room. Denis Montel of RDAI took a different direction entirely for the restaurant and bar spaces, where a lacquered, billowing ceiling in deep oxblood brown swells over a checkerboard floor and a central oval bar, the whole room alive with reflected amber light. The basement club retains its original pool. The Salon Chinois keeps its 19th-century stained glass. The building remembers everything.

"The hotel is beautiful and the location great. However, it didn’t feel like the staff wanted to go above and beyond for any requests. We booked through Amex which includes perks like early check in, room upgrades, and late check out, all of which were denied when we asked. Perhaps it’s not the hotels fault, but we booked our anniversary stay at this hotel under the assumption at least one of these perks would be honored. Also, the TV in our room was broken, which we asked to have fixed every night we were there - nobody came to look at it or offer any updates when we followed up. No compensation or even a free drink at the bar was offered. My husband and I left feeling like we could get better service and experience at any number of hotels in the area."

"An exceptional hotel experience from start to finish. The staff were consistently professional, attentive, and welcoming, and the facilities were excellent. The massages were particularly impressive, and our room was exceptionally spacious and beautifully appointed. A lovely added touch was that the hotel even provided eclipse glasses, which made the experience feel especially memorable. A truly outstanding stay and thoroughly deserving of five stars."

"This is an amazing Hotel that really makes your trip to Paris feel luxurious. However there are still a few little details that need to be fixed to help place it over the top."
